DI1- Going where no Civ has gone before; One City Always War!

I tried this same game in private, did OK until 1700 or so, when the AIs had upped their production enough to be able to send CONTINOUS stacks of 8 units at me EVERY TURN. Even though I had grenadiers to their macemen I could not do what I had to win, which was not just hold my city but hold my developed tiles. 3 grens on a zero-defense tile holding a farm are toast to 5 jumobs and 3 macemen two turns in a row. The only way this would have been possible is if I was able to get infantry by then. Very doubtful since you can't really hold cottages early on due to pillaging. THe AI was very smart and kept varying from which direction they attacked, forcing me to scramble my units around. Again, the ONLY way this can be won in such a configuration is with an ENORMOUS tech lead.

Here I was beginning to believe our city on a hill would be invincible. Rik even promotes our top LB with Guerilla II. That guy alone should have had at least a 150% defense bonus. Wow! Hard to believe he went down.

I guess we won't be needing those extra players, anymore...

Thinking on it it's apparently obvious that cIV AI's send troops in mass whereas cIII didn't. Once we lost our foreward movement the game was lost. The computer was sending troops in mass from every AI at once.

What do you all think? What else caused our downfall?
Oh, I agree. We quickly went from being the aggressor to the defender.

I think our biggest downfall came at the beginning of the game, though. We did not have a clear research strategy defined. I don't think you can play OCC without the bureaucracy civic. The game is now over and we never did get around to starting research on Civil Service. I also think we should have gone after the Pyramids and the Great Library. I think the Pyramids are a must to open up the police state civic. Do you realize that police state + bureaucracy + a forge + Heroic Epic would have been a 200% boost to our unit production? We did not have the techs for either of those civics or either building.

Wow! Heck of a combination, and no, I didn't know that.

I agree that we did not having a clearly defined research strategy. We should have planned this out better. I also feel we probably should have looked into AW a lot more than we did. I agree with Rik on that we jumped into this variant way too early.

Maybe in a few more months when the game is better understood it would be fun to try this again.

This brings up an interesting point. Our pangea map made this a much tougher game. We had no defensive chokepoints where we could set up a defensive perimeter. It is not enough to defend your city, but all 21 tiles must be defended!

Rik is probably correct, though. We should probably master OCC and AW before trying to do both at the same time.:crazyeye:
