Did anyone find ironclads useful?

That is a wasted tech and one I'm in no hurry to aquire, ironclads used to be somewhat usefull back when you didn't have to have the specific tech to get them. I go from Galleys straigt to destroyers and subs.

yes, i found them very usefull on my industrial age archipelago ironcladsare the only ship you can use mod, other than that no.

In C3C they are worthless, in PTW and Vanilla they are somewhat useful.

IIRC, Ironclads did not upgrade in PTW. In C3C they upgrade to destroyer, so you could prebuild your navy...

In my 1st demigod game no civ ever researched it and I gat to the modern age, however they ignored Communism and Fascism for a pretty long time as well.

Ironclads are really useless since you have to reseach an optional to get them I would rather use frigates

I use them to pre buld my navy but sometimes rarely use them as an escort ship since I like to pre build up my modern Navy and using them in combat risks losing them. Other then they aren't really usefull.

Don't research the tech yourself, it's not worth it. If you can get it in a deal use it to prebuild your navy like has been suggested here. To use them effectively stick them in groups of +/- 4 ironclads, so 3 can bombard and the 4th can take the damaged enemy ship out.

i only use them when i'm on an island during an early industrial war and they have a huge navy, but other than that, no

New here...and new to CIV, so what I say will probably be 'disputed' by some of the vets... ;)

I used them my first time on Regent ... I was far enough ahead in techs that I felt I could afford 4 turns to research them. (Me Byzantines, democracy, Huge map, 15 Civs, 70% Continents, 3 bill earth.) Allowed me to put off going for a modern navy via steel/refining/combustion branch a few more turns and go instead for TOE and Hoover.

Good thing...I have used them to keep my lux flowing without paying a single gpt. With market's in most big cities I have not yet raised my lux slider above 0. I have traded them to 4 other civs so far, getting 4 luxs for an additional 20 turns cheap. (I have not allowed any of those Civ's iron and/or coal - I am the only civ with extra of those to trade so they cannot build them against me.)

I also immedialtly built 20 ic's, using them as escorts as the Spanish were decimating my frigates and galleon convoys to the other continent with numerous privateers and the English had many Men 'o War. Worked great. I was able to keep my galleon chain to the other continent safe to support me against the Romans and Sumerians. I was also able to research for 2 or 3 turns with the sci slider at 0 to build up a substantial treasury...no pressure to get a modern navy any quicker.

When I was ready to build a modern navy I put my ic's in port the turn before getting Combustion and viola!... in ONE turn I had 20 sleek new destroyers pulling at their leashes. Lincoln who had built ic's declared against me a few turns later ... to his surprise and regret when my new destroyer's accompanied transports which debarked an Army on his shores, and whupped 5 of his 10 ic's in the process.

I keep reading here that this tech or that tech is useless... but in my limited experience with some creativity and imagination each tech can be useful ...and each tech could also be worthless ... depending on the game environment. IMHO it depends on the situation and how one decides to play the game. Don't write off a horse until you check out the track...

I don't usually play on Island maps so I don't bother researching that tech along with Ironclad naval units.

I think something can be said for researching them if you can afford it. I normally dont bother, but I had a game recently where I acquired them (I cant remember how) and I seem to recall the ai being willing to pay a fair price.

They are more effective than frigates at shore bombardment BTW, but they are a bit slow.

I think they are situational at best, but they may pay for themselves if you are scientific since its proably better to let the ai pay for ironclads instead of something that is actually useful.

I guess I agree with most of the people here. I doubt I would research them unless I was far enough ahead that it wasn't a big deal. However, I will trade for it and build them occasionally, especially with a Civ several techs behind me. I then use them for patrols, shore bombardment, etc.

Breunor

If the tech gave some other benefit people might be inclined to research it...but wasting time on an optional tech that only give out an inferior unit is kinda silly, and putting it there was a bad move by Firaxis.

Ironclads are way too slow to be useful, and since AI's suck at naval military, you pretty much never need more than a couple frigates, let alone clads. Too bad because they *would* be tough goons in the seas
