I my opinion they ONLY game better than Civilization series.

Me and my mates at LANs only recently switched from BOTF to Civ 4.

it the most fun you can have in a large space of time , I still think the combat is better in BOTF and so is the Sabotage and Espionage Spy’s are largely pointless in Civ4.

Its strange to think that star trek game was so good when most the others were so bad. (obviously my opinion)

But BOTF was intriguing and had enough to keep you clicking the turn button over and over again, The Only thing that ruined that game was the Defiant it’s to powerful and no other race got a similar ship

the only Ship that could really challenge it was Klingon K’vort.

I played as the Romulans who did u guys play as?

This would be better posted in this forum All Other Games, you'll find more like-minded people there.

For me, I love Birth of the Federation, it was a decent strategy game, though it did have some flaws. Wonder if my disc is still around here...

BOTF stands for Birth of the Federation; a fairly old Star Trek strategy game. It was well above the standards of most Star Trek games (i.e. it was reasonable), but I was never that impressed by it. It lacked the one more turn syndrome of Civ, and also had a number of technical issues. I played a couple of dozen games of it several years ago, but since then it's been gathering dust. Unlike Civ I've never felt any desire to g back to it after losing interest. I doubt it would work on XP anyway.

I got the one more turn syndrome from it too, but it suffers from nasty memory leak issues, whih meant turn loads could take several minutes in the late game. That's an experience killer.

My main problems game wise was that in every game your rivals hated you, and the only way to combat this was with lots of bribery. Some great battles though, my proudest moment was finally destroying a Borg Cube. Took my entire fleet and left me crippled for when a second cube arrived, but ha!

Lol , works on XP loads of fixes around. Also latest patch fixed memory leak I think. Well we didn’t have this problem anymore when we played it a week ago and we got up to about 500 turns, Battles are great.

Our game ended when the Borg attacked My mate took 1 of his systems then there were 2 cubes then the second cube started attacking klingon (ai).

little did we know that the Klingons had been wiped out and over 15 Borg cubes were now floating round the galaxy , It reminded me of an alternative dimension episode of star trek as we all tried to defeat the Borg but couldn't.
In the spirit of playing as the Romulans when we were all suppose to make a stand against the Borg over Earth I de-cloaked and attacked my Friends then warped out, only lost 2 war birds, Then from a nebula I brought out 6 troop transport and 12 strike cruises took care of the cube and took earth, Lol sneaky Romulans. Cardassians helped me by constantly using intel on the fed. We all died in the end but at least i occupied Earth lol

CornMaster and I used to play that a lot - but I remember horrible memory leaks ruining the game. I also remember that we would mess around with the graphics files - we would unzip the file that contained all of the files and then rezip at lowest compression setting. I remember that sped the game up a bit.

Where are the fixes that you are talking about icemanjsg?

It was a good game. Think I tried to play it once on XP but it wouldn't get past the loading screen. My initial tactic against the Borg was just to ram them although later on I did occasionally destroy them without ramming.

Yea it was a good game. But i didn't get into it that much ... probably because it was to startrek-ish. :p

The site were i downloaded them from a long time ago is no longer up :(

they must of gone under or started playing civ 4 like me lol :)

The Romulans were definately the best race. Warbirds, cloaking devices and a free hand to do whatever you wanted was undoubtabtly brilliant.

Klingons and Federation came a good second, I enoyed playing as them. The Cardassians I rarely played as, and I don't think I've ever played as the Ferengi. :p

Now I am very, very interested in this game.

The Game itself was very good , but it does have some major downfalls

It crashes almost every combat past turn 200

And it does get very slow

but still my favorite

Ferngi if you can get past their rubbish interface and the fact that you are playing as the most annoying race in the history of races

were amazing if you can imagine an ULTRA finical race in civ4 who have 4 traits ALL finical that would sum up the Ferngi, Usally single they use the Klingons as a sort of dog and bride them to do all the fighting.

I liked the Cardassian Best Phasers and Incrediable Hulls. If you could force a fight in a Nebula you would NEVER lose

I do like the Klingon Battle Cruisers. Not much point building anything else.

Yeah, I loved that game. Although i'm not entirely sure where my CD of it is. A while ago I was part of a forum to make a fan made sequel, but that fell through unfortuantly. A new upgraded version would be great, I'd buy it in a instant.

Two annoyances that I've rediscovered is the random crash after an hour of playing where I am not going to bother to replay that amount of turns.

Planetary assaults being too random. The Romulans took a 100 million planet with one troop transport whilst I lost 5 troop transports attacking a planet with at most 40 million. Both didn't have orbital batteries or anything else.

Trying to fight the Romulans is quite interesting since you cannot choose when you want to fight and it creates a dynamic war where systems are traded. The Borg just appeared and I'm stuck with Cruisers however the Romulans now want to be friends since the Borg have appeared. Been basically at war with the Klingons for the entire game.

I found that when you have an enemy you've been at war with a while, they will not seek peace.

"You're down to ONE planet"
"No peace, we will fight to the end!"
"It's not gonna be long, mate."

Technically with the Klingons we have only been at war for about 10 turns however we have each destroyed an outpost of each other and have both lost a fleet of ships.

Guessing that my best option with the Borg will be to ram it although I think I will probably need to increase the number of cruisers that I have significantly. 14 nearby.
