Wishing I Was Here
Hola!

I am currently on Chieftain level. I'm an alright player, but compared to you guys I pretty much suck. :o Should I move up to warlord? I'm scared to because I'm still struggling a bit on chieftain. Is it that much of a change?

Thanks!

You can read a lot of strategies in the Strategy & Tips forum. Also, you can look at the War Academy (there's a link on the main civfanatics.com page under Civ3).

Struggling "a bit"? Well, the difference between the two levels is pretty large on paper, at least, so if you still find it difficult to win on Chieftain, you should perhaps get a couple more games under you're belt before you go up.

If you've played a few games on Chieftain, understand the basic concepts, and are even competitive with the computer, I say go for it. The challenge might be fun, and the worst that could happen is that you lose.

You might just surprise yourself by kicking some AI butt.

I think you should move up. Cheiftain gets you into some bad habits, or at least it did for me (leaving my research at 100% the whole game, very hard habit to break it seems) Cheiftan is basically there just to get you used to the controls, and how the game works. The transition from Cheiftan to Warlord will probably be difficult, but keep working at it.

It is a bit of a change going "up the ladder", but I say it's worth it.
Don't stay too long on Chieftain, it's really much more fun playing on higher levels, even if it's of course more challenging.
I don't consider myself a very skilled player and just a couple of months ago, I almost always played on Chieftain. After lurking around the forums for a while, reading strategy articles and other stuff, I made some changes to my playing style and suddenly found myself winning on Regent. Now I can even beat Monarchy sometimes.
So, I say, go for it and good luck!

I too used to only play Chieftain. Then moved up to Warlord, and now I am on Regent. You just have to make sure you break bad habits like the 100% research. (And don't leave your cities undefended like I did my first time on Warlord :p )

I still do that on Deity...

I wouldn't necessarily say it's just for that. I play cheiftan if I want to play a game in just a few hours, and beat the **** out of everyone real easy with a cheap military :D.

If you play too many games on Chieftain, you'll begin some bad habits (I had to learn that the hard way). Don't be afraid to try new levels. Sure you may be behind at first, but by the end you'll smoke 'em :) !

On levels higher than chieftan, you may be behind in the ancient era, then catch up and take the lead in later eras. So if you are far behind early on, don't be discouraged.

Superevie,

Just asking this question indicates that you really are ready to play Regent or above if someone will only show you the keys to the kingdom.

The cheiftain difficulty level really is not designed to be played over and over. It is just to give you a feel for where the buttons are and how the game may progress verrrrrrrrrrrry sloooooooooowly. (agonizingly slowly).

Basically on cheiftain, you AI opponents are so handicapped that any game progress problems end up being purley a function of wher a player may fail to do one of just 4 or 5 key skill things that make the difference between being a victim and a player.

Read two key articles and make a strong effort to look at thos two key articles with a thoughtful eye and you will never be able to look back at cheiftain or warlord again without asking yourself "How could a have wandered around down there so long, when playing stornger games is so much more fun?"

The first article you should probably read is:

Improving Your Opening Play Sequences

(not because I wrote it but because worker task management, terrain assessment, and city placement is where most newer players make their first mistakes.)

Second you should get a better understanding of expansion and settler/worker farming by reading Bamspeedy's great article on:

Babylon's Deity Settler's

With these two sets of tools you can easily elevate yourself out of the wasteland that is the Cheiftain and Warlord zone of the game. I characterize these two lower levels this way not because of anything the human player does but because the AI players at those levels are so handicapped that the game drags and balks and many of the games most enjoyable features and play options will not even turn on.

Superevie, definitely check out both of those articles! Cracker's Opening Play Sequences really helped me to make the jump from Regent to Monarch a while ago. Both are excellent articles, two of the best in all of Civdom, in my opinion.

You're not the only one Anarres... ;)

@Superevie: Just try it, maybe you'll lose, but then again maybe not.

Thank you guys so much! I think after I finish the game I'm currently working on, I'll move up to warlord. The worst thing that can happen is that I lose! :p

Thanks again!

Good luck as you attempt warlord, Superevie! :goodjob:

Take all the time you need! Moving up is fun but don't let us pressure you. As long as you still enjoy chieftain theres no need to move up.

Whatever's the most fun is what you should do. Learning strategies on your own and not from here is great fun too. I will say however it can also be fun learning strategies from outside sources as to not feel stuck. While I regret learning some of the tricks I learned, I think it was worth it to me to learn from those articles in the end(though I'm never read cracher's opening play yet! Nya nya! :p)
