I'm not sure if this has been posted but i found this interesting diplomacy exploit that helped me change a completely lost game into a victory.
attack any civilization, or wait for on to attack you. after the attack starts the victim civilization will break diplomatic ties with your civ for a couple of turns. once diplomatic contact resumes, go talk to the ruler of the opposing civilization and suggest a trade deal.
then use the option "lets bury the hatchet ....." the AI ruler will probably give some absurd demands for peace, now go and remove those absurd demands from your side and instead add some demands of your own, like ask for a city or a couple of techs. then again click "lets bury the hatchet ...." this time the AI will reply with the exact same terms you gave him, just accept the deal and both of you are happy.
this exploit occurs because in a peace deal only one side can offer gifts, since you have already asked for gifts for the AI it cannot inturm ask anything of you.
