Directx ERROR

Hi, I am installing civ4 on a newly formatted windows. After installation, when I tried to open it, there was a "d3dx9_26.dll" not found error, so I reinstalled dx9 a couple of times to no avail. Then I downloaded the file and copied it directly to windows system folder. It started up but stops at "Init Engine" phase and a error box appears:

Initialize Renderer failed. Check DirectX Installation, Latest Graphics Drivers and Graphics Settings Parameters:
-width = 1024
-height =768
-flags = 0xc
-hwnd = 0xd014e
-adaptrid = 0
-deviceid = 3
Error:Creation failed:Could not initialize DirectX9

I am using winxp prof sp2 with a bfg 7900gs card. Hope someone can help me

I think I know what the problem is but I cant solve it.
I run dx diag and it shows that the dx I have is 9b not 9c. I don't know why running the dx install doesn't update it. Anyone knows how?

1. Download DirectX

2. Run directx_aug2007_redist.exe and extract the files anywhere

3. Run DXSETUP.exe

4. Install

5. Restart your computer

I have the same problem, trying to install CIV on another computer...
Does anybody know how to solve problem?

SOLUTION!!!!!!!
I had this exact same problem and I had other issues with my computer so I was just going to reinstall windows but first I decided to try and repair windows. I reinstalled ALL drivers and it fixed the problem. I also installed the Civ 4 1.61 update. Civ 4 has been working just fine since then! Hope this helps you!
