Disable the ESRB warning

Between the intro movie, Steam throwing a fit because it I dare try playing a game without letting it broadcast everything I do, and the ESRB thing it takes literally several minutes from clicking the icon to looking at the games main menu. I was able to disable the intro movie, but I still have Steam crying I won't give it marketing info and the ESRB treating me like a ******** 10 year old every @&%# time I start the game.

So anyone know how to disable the ESRB thing? I'd ask about Steam as well, but I already learned they're a horrible company. But that's a different rant.

Although, admittedly, the irony of Steam whining that it can't stalk me followed immediately by a warning that the internet is full of scary people, like stalkers for example, was rather funny the first time I ran into it. But the joke has gotten old.

I agree, I don't get why the warning is so in your face. You'd think this was some super violent sexual game or something.

Yes this needs to go even MMOs don't force you do do this every time you log on.

My guess is they have some kind of idiot lawyer at 2k behind this.

That's an illegal move.

Considering ESRB ratings are not part of any actual law I don't think it would be, unless the file(s) yo need to change to stop it from showing up or replacing it with a split second clip of blackness is hardcoded through the .exe file.

I'm not a lawyer, but I think it should be enough to display it once.

Totally agree, or at least make it skippable. I don't think any gamers care about the NVIDIA or ATI logo, Intel ad, publisher's logo, developer's logo, ESRB logo/rating, or any other useless logos appearing while you're waiting for the game to start. They should just stick them all onto the loading screen if they really have to.

Bullpucky the ESRB has no legal weight against consumers it can only act against ESRB members. Moreover, I doubt modding software under fair use to get rid of something like a pop up is illegal in any western jurisdiction. By would logic getting rid of the movie would be an offense we are all guilty of.

I think the computer he plays Civ5 on isn't connected to the net and as such it spends time trying to find a connection anyways, it would be nice if VALVe streamlined that soon. However at least the worst it does is it just takes a few extra seconds.

EDIT: Sweet, good fix!

Now if only I could apply that to EA's logo on a few games I don't actually have installed :p

Just consider it an example of why 'Online Interactions Not Rated by the ESRB. Click to continue'...

Anyway, sorry, didn't realize comic book like symbols for mild swearwords with an issue.

There's a fix to remove both ESRB notices from the startup and mod screens here.
I will love you forever and ever for that link. Or at least until I get used to not having the ESRB thing and forget about it. Whichever comes first.

*edit* oh yeah, and I figured out the steam thing too. By default, enable steam cloud synchronization in the properties was enabled. So in offline mode it pops up a warning telling you it can't sync to the cloud. Once I unchecked that, Steam quit whining. Figured I'd mention that in case someone else runs into the same issue.

Now that the intro movie, ESRB warning, and steam cloud thingie are done away with, the game takes half the time to load as it used to. Nice. Thanks guys.

I have a cousin named Alexander who just happens to be a mean-spirited lawyer and history buff with a yacht to pay off. If not for that disclaimer he would be suing the heck out of 2K by now, so I fully understand their need to make us read that ‘The content of this videogame is fictional and is not intended to represent or depict an actual record of the events, persons or entities in the game’s historical setting’ every time you launch it. Can’t be too careful these days, after all.

/sarcasm

That used to annoy me to no end as well, but I’m back to IV (and reading these boards) pending more patches. Hopefully disabling that 'yet one more click' nag screen will be included. ;)
