I don't know how many out there feel as I do, but here's my slant on Civ IV

It costs almost twice as much

It has about half as many choices/options/preferences/features

It takes about 100 times longer to start

It takes 3 times the computing power to run

You have to be one of 2 things to say "YEAH!, Civ IV is great". Either a dyed-in-the-wool complete Civ fan with no reservations and a blind eye OR mentally incompetent.

This is not #4 in a series, it's a completely different game with some basic similarities to Civ, but a look and feel like Rise Of Nations and the like.

I was looking for the next great chapter in the saga, not an also ran.

I'd be more inclined to tell you why I think that Civ4 is a great game if you didn't make clear that no matter what I say, I'll be either a fanboy or "mentally incompetent" in your eyes. Seems that you want to decry other opinions instead of trying to understand them. In that case, I'll rather play a little more instead of trying to help you understanding other perspectives.

I'm truly sorry that you don't like the game. You are missing a lot.

1-Because its a brand new game. All new games go for 40-60, am I right?

2-Oh really? I thought that there were more compared to Civ3...

3-Because its a newer game with better graphics, deal with it.

4-I'm neither, I am somone who has purchased every civ since 2 and enjoy them muchly.

5-And actually, it says Civ 4 on the box, so it it the fourth in the saga.

whoopdedoo another user with 1 post calling everyone who likes the game a 'mental incompetent.' why does this not surprise me anymore..?

why are so many disapointed ?

Most of their money goes into development not q&a

The only company that can bankroll huge $ for testing is blizzard

Everyone else has to sacrafice some testing until revenue is generated then its patch time

My take but then again im still doing the first half of the tutorial :goodjob:

i agree with dsilvia. civ 4 has a cheap AoE feel to it that civ 3 or 2 didnt have

1-Just the person I want to talk to, I've got this new game and it's only $60...

2-You've got to be kidding! Go through PTW or Conquests and list for yourself (itemize) the preferences and at each screen in the startup the choices you have for the world and the player/opponents and game rules. Now, do the same with Civ IV... I rest my case.

3-I once had a supervisor that felt like you do. When I asked him about some new software we were developing and how its performance would impact our userbase, he replied "They have deep pockets, let them throw more hardware at it, we won't spend more on development!"

4-I've got them all myself, and enjoy them all, that's why Civ IV is disappointing.

5-Do you believe all the advertising hype you read?

i feel the 3D graphics are a wasted effort and actually detract from my enjoyment of the game.

however, the gameplay and features have made civ 4 to be fun, challenging, and an excellent evolution of the franchise, in my opinion

So, you are comparing a game with 2 expansions to a new game and complaining that the new game doesn't have as much content. Okay, fair enough, but in two years once Civ4 has two expansions, it'll likely have more (especially since it is more moddable).

dsilvia, you seem to have trouble understanding that not everyone is the same as you.
Many people, in fact most people feel that Civ4 is actually an improvement. It's ok that you to not like it, but you must understand that it is also ok that others do like it. Presumably you are not the perfect model human being. Someone having a different opinion to your own does not automatically point to them being mentally incompetent.

YAMBT (PM me for what that means, and I may tell you)

If you don’t like the game, here’s an idea; DON’T PLAY IT. Complaining on a random forum about unfounded reasons you hate the game isn’t helping anyone do anything.

You joined in October and are throwing around complaints about new users? Yikes...

This is a personal attack which is unwarranted. Everyone does not have the exact same experience. People shape their opinions based on experience. You may have had a poor experience with the game, and others had positive experiences. To tell them they are incompetant is injustified and pure ignorance on your part. I am not denying that Civ IV has its problems. Every piece of software has them. For me, Civ IV does take some time to load, can be choppy at times late game, and the wonder movies are choppy as the game has been running a while. Do I let these performance issues hinder my positive experience from the game? No. I am able to still enjoy the game despite the performance issues I am experiencing.

You want to criticize the game, go ahead because it is your right to. But insulting those who do not share your views shows you are highly immature.

Agree with Babrook he is 12 mentally as least. BTW, I guess I am mentally incompetent according to the OP, that will come as a shook to my Ph.D. advisor!

OP, your opinion seems to be worth about as much as I paid for this post!

RoN : looks like a computer game of some sort.
Civ IV : looks like a computer game of some sort.

Yeah... I see what you are getting at. :p

I have ignored most of the threads of this type, but I had to respond to this one.

Not for me it didn't. I bought Civ 4 for £18, whilst Civ 3 was over £20 when I got it. Add another £20 for Conquests and Civ 4 is currently cheaper.

I hope you are not trying to compare the current price of the two games. Most people here bought Civ 3 a long time ago when it was a comparable price to what Civ 4 is now.

As addressed by other posters, you are comparing Civ 4 with Civ 3 + two expansions. I think Civ 4 has about the same if not more of those things you listed than vanilla Civ 3 does.

These two quotes go together really as they are both related to system performance as well as both including numbers plucked out of thin air.

Civ 4 is more system intensive than Civ 3, though considering the latter is a four year old game that isn't surprising. Computer hardware is constantly improving, so software evolves with it. It's called progress. If it wasn't for technological progress we would still be watching black & white TVs.

Why do you deem it necessary to attack anyone who actually enjoys Civ 4?

Did you expect it to be a rehash of the previous games? I would much rather play Civ 4 instead of Civ 3.5 as you seem to have been expecting.

If you take Civ 4 on it's own merits as a new game instead of trying to compare it to Civ 3, you might just like it. If not, you can always go back to playing Civ 3 instead.

Excuse me, "new game"??? It says Civilization IV, not "A Whole New Civilization Game from Sid Meier and Firaxis". It's supposed to be a continuation if it uses a continuation name.

Yes, I'd have less to complain about, as would anyone, had they not chosen to call it Civilization IV, but they did and it isn't.
