first of all, if you have the brains to look for a proper deal then you would have found civ4 for 17£ at play.com
second of all civ4 is civ. its another refinement of civ1 in an evolutionary evolvement. my beef with civ4 is that it is TOO similar to older versions without anything to make it truly interesting and it is too easy. by that I mean, in an environment without the AI the game is pushover, the game itself does not provide a challenge, it is the competition with the other civiliations that do. this I find quite annoying since keeping a civilization together is what should be the challenge, not defeating other civs...
also resource management is not part of the game. one oil resource will supply infinitive amounts of ships, military units, civilian demand and whatever else requires oil. population is irrelevant for production, trade is irrelevant for city growth. there are too many aspects of the game that are illogical and the game is FULL of poor design choices and several deficiencies.
civ4 is an ok game, but it is not addictive and not very interesting. unfortunately, since it had the potential to be the best game in the series. its just not good enough...
