I was in the middle of playing a game (SimCity 3000 UK Edition), when there was a large bang in the computer. When I opened up the disc drive I found that the disc had been snapped into fragments, and could only get one part (about a third) of the disc out. What could have caused the disc to break inside the drive, and can anything be done about the drive?

As for getting it out, you'll just have to get tweezers or something and work all the pieces out. As for why a disk (i'm assuming you meant an optical disk) would break up like that, it probably had a flaw or damage and the heating of it by the laser caused that to give way.

Maybe the disc wore out.

If you can get all the pieces out, it could be fine. I'd recommend testing it with a disc that you can afford to lose, though.

My computer was taken to PC World. They said that a new disc drive will be added, but that the damage isn't covered by the warranty and the old drive will have to remain as removing it breaks the warranty.

Why duct tape it? If your warranty says nothing about opening up the case yourself, I suggest you open it up and simply unplug the power cable leading to that disk drive. Better yet, ask PC World if they can do that so there are no problems with warranty.

As to why it shattered? Most likely a tiny fracture. A CD undergoes a lot of stress when its being spun due to the centrifugal force. A small crack, one that would otherwise not affect the cd at all would become greatly exacerbated possibly causing the cd to 'explode' in the drive. Its too late to tell where the crack was now, but my money is on the inside plastic ring having a small one ( the clear ring around the hole of the cd ). A crack there would grow outwards until it became big enough to make the cd explode.

The duct tape idea came from something I did to the USB ports in the front. So I wouldn't get forgetful and try to use them and possible scratch a USB drive. (My mom told me to cover it up for that reason. I don't know if the end of a USB drive can get scratched, but why risk it?)

Scratch a USB drive? You mean the metal piece that goes into the port? Thats really stupid imho. That metal piece is there to protect the contacts of the port, and it doesnt matter if it gets scratched.

I wasn't quite sure, thanks.

I'm a noob who likes to think she's a geek.

Hey, all of us geeks were 'noobs' at one point or another :p

I got my computer back. They decided to replace the drive instead of leaving the old one in. The repair costed slightly more than the drive itself.
