Disinterest in difficulty

I just realized today that I have no real interest in ever climbing up over the emporer bump on difficulty. I am usually very self determined when playing games and simply will never play a game on "easy".. its normal or up all the time. However on Civ 4 this is lost for some reason.

I play mostly on Prince/Monarch usually as I feel the computer does need an extra boost considering its "Automatic Ignorance" as AI. (Not to sound super duper or anything) But Prince is my laid back games and Monarch to Emporer is when I feel like really going at it and risking not only losing but death itself.

The point of this thread is I don't ever think I will ever actually feel that I want to go up to higher difficulties like I used to. It seems all I am doing above emporer is giving the computer rediculous cheats to play against , not to mention handicapping my own penalties. I see anything above Monarch is more than a simple leg up on me. Although, I do step into Emperor from time to time.

Does anyone else feel this same way?

If you enjoy playing the game on your current level then that's the perfect place to play it at. :)

I agree.

I am just wondering if anyone else has noticed a "disinterest" in ever going up past a specific difficulty. I have a tendancy to want to try to beat games I play on the hardest mode. I usually work my way up from normal and see how far up I can get.

For some reason Civ 4 doesnt have this effect on me which is rare for me. The only other game I can think of that I never cared to beat the game on the highest difficulty was Sim City and that was because all it was, was starting out with less cash.

I'm 'stuck' on Emperor and can win most of the time on that level and don't really want to push onto the next level either. I don't really look at civ as a game to 'beat' like many other games would be.

I guess part of the reason I like it is because the fun is more in the journey than in the destination.

I enjoyed the game the most on Noble, but now I have to play on Prince to get some challenge. I don't want to end up dominating the game in every game I play, which makes me look for another difficulty level.

However, I don't enjoy these games where I have to "perform" in order to keep up or win. I'd rather just live the game and enjoy it. The fact that computers get "unfair" bonuses eliminates some of the fun factor in the game. I'd rather have the CPU team up on me "unfairly" than take the lead because of a silly production/tech bonus.

I think the handicaps hurt the game especially at the start of the game when the first religions and wonders are founded. The start is just one performance after another: chop a worker, chop a settler, chop an Axeman, hurry - chop chop chop!

I play on noble, only because its the highest difficulty that does not resort to giving the AI civs bonuses. I'm sure the intelligence is increased also, but I just don't wanna play knowing the whole time I'm at a disadvantage. Sure its a challenge, but I'd rather be challenged on equal ground.

That's the way I feel, too, so I'll find a level I'm comfortable with and stay there I expect. I'm only at Noble at the moment as my preference for marathon games on huge maps means that I've only actually completed three games so far, each lasting about three weeks. When I've won five games, I'll take the next step, but I'm in no hurry. :)

Oh, and it should of course be 'uninterested' as disinterested means something very different.

I feel the same way. Prince is the ultimate level for me on which I can win without too much effort, but I still need to concentrate and think about my decisions. I can beat noble with my hands tied behind my back now. I recently did a game on noble and I was amazed of the small amount of turns it took to research a tech. I had cossacks in my land, while others still had axemen and archers running around. I might try monarch for a challenge, but I play civ to relax. I don't want it to be 'work'.

I have a problem because whenever i play for the first time on level easy I absolutely crush everybody and win by miles. So when I play on the next level up, I am used to playing it the easy way and I get REALLY frustrated at little things like losing a settler or worker because I am used to such things being easy to prevent on other levels. I have to get used to having a few difficulties every so often! as the saying goes: "No pain, no gain" and I have decided that is how it should be in civilization.
