Divine Intervention V: Montezuma's Madness

Would you mind giving us a map? I don't need anything else, but I just can't access the save with warlords, so...:\

I might give DI another shot. Last time I kinda got lost in the storyline, so I just kinda left.

I'll get one up in a jiffy. A shot of the minimap as well as several from WB. Oh, my post has a story now too.

Ok, there's a lot of them...
First the mini map

Changes (NFTE):
Spoiler :
*Added several forests in and around Aztec lands, and changed a few jungles into forests (inc. a grassland-bananas).

*Added a deer resource to a grassland forest tile next to the second Aztec city.

*Gave Monty a warrior with Woodsman I-III, and named it Tree Shaman. I also removed its free Combat promotion, and gave it enough experience to ensure that further promotions will require either loads of combat or additional help from me.

*Expanded the large jungle at the centre of Monty's continent quite considerably.

The Poet felt something unnerving. The earth shook. Terrible creaking sounds deafened him as he fell to the ground and started to roll downhill, taking considerable damage from the stony ground.

He had walked this deserted world for long, never meeting anybody. But something was changing. With the arrival of the gods, so had come the immortals. And the barbarians. His paths were no longer safe, and what humans he had found did not appreciate his poetic verses, they chased him away. Perhaps they thought he was a witchmaster?

This line of thoughts were stopped as he hit the ground at the foot of the hill.
For it was in this moment that Phaelep entered the world. Unfortunately, some of his essence was caught by the Poets rather fleeting mind. He was infused with the essence of a god.

When he awoke, his body did not hurt at all. He was having trouble thinking clearly. He quickly crawled to a nearby lake to look at his reflection.

The image shook what sanity had been left in the Poet. His face was pale. eyes painted tar. His clothes was the most shocking. A strange clownish look, mixed with something cruel-looking (Nihil had entered the world aswell). Voices spoke in his head. He caught himself smiling as he wandered towards the recently founded civilization of the Aztecs. They would not hurt him, for he was untouchable by the humans. He sang a tune as he wandered along a small river.

"Haha, what a freedom I have won,
time to join in on the fun,
I who once inspired both Wagner and Bach,
will from now on be known as Perpentach!
The god who speaks in riddles and rhymes,
and cackle at peculiar times...

@CCRunner: I would like you to help me with edits from now on! No changes needed this turnset though.

@Trynthlas: Perpentach will arrive at the Aztec lands soon. When he is there, you can ask him for advice, but expect it to be hard to understand. He will occassionally leave for other lands if you are found too boring. His presence will result in minor bonuses/drawbacks as he has a tendancy of driving people around him insane (or inspire them!). His own comments will be easier understandable than his asked advice, but please use both... As a demi-god (?), he might know something about the world which can help you greatly...

As the centuries rolled past, the Aztecs continued to give proper respect to the Spirit of the Forest, and were duly rewarded. In and around Aztec lands, disease-ridden jungles became less inhospitable to humans, whilst new forests grew quickly wherever there was room. Moreover, two new sacred sites were discovered in the Teotihuacan region. One of these places was similar to the fruit forests of Tenochtitlan, while the other was home to many animals that might be caught for food. As before, most Aztecs believed that to defile these sites would be a grave insult to Tree.

Amongst the most devout of the tree-worshippers, there emerged a few whose deep affinity for the ways of the forest made them a useful addition to the Aztec military. Led by a Tree Shaman, whose personal bond with Tree's domain was especially profound, these men were exceptionally talented at fighting in, and navigating through, the forests and jungles. Thanks to their encyclopedic knowledge of natural medicines, they were also quite adept at healing wounds sustained in combat.

Despite all this good news, recent events had left some of the Aztecs quite concerned. A forest fire had raged across the continent, leaving a strip of desecrated ground in its wake. More worrying still, there were rumours that their leader was thinking about sending a force through this infernal valley to attack Sumeria. That is not to say the Aztecs had any qualms about war, of course. What bothered them was that the divine impetus for this invasion seemed to originate with a deity who paid little respect to the forest or, indeed, to nature itself.

What to do:
Spoiler :
The chopping rule is the same as before, but you now have two more tiles that must remain undisturbed (the banana and deer tiles next to Teotihuacan).

An invasion of Sumeria in the next turnset will be greatly frowned upon, although if your troops take an alternate route (ie. they don't use Nihil's road), and if the Tree Shaman is left at home, then the effect will be less severe. For each of these points, a screenie would be handy to demonstrate your innocence or guilt.

The God of Luck was furious. Furious with Nihil, the cursed wretch had split his peoples like an axe would split wood, wreaking his plans. All that work, all in vain. Nihil would suffer for this.

He looked closer at the world, Montezuma had been armed and ordered to attack. The Aztecs must not win such a war, for Victoria would roll over next and the Aztecs would reign supreme on their continent. The peoples of the world must become unified against the Aztec threat, be always vigilant against the Green Menace. Alliances must be made. Troops built. Montuzuma beaten back.

Across the world, a prophet came to the people to speak the word of the gods, the way of peace. The God of Luck knew few would heed his message yet temples and monasteries were built to honour his coming into the world.

No new-born gods would stop the path the God of Luck had laid out being the path which would be tread.

Ouch, way to kill my planned destruction of gilgamesh :cringe: No worries though, he'll still attack (at least he better, for his sake;)) and somebodies army will be severely beaten down. I'm kinda curious to see who he sides with in this one. Me or you and Winston? He better not try some compromise between all of us or I'll and hopefully you two will all beat down on him

... all according to plan...

Spoiler NFTE :
In true monty style, he should go for Vicky :crazyeye:

Anyway, Gilgamesh's power graph spike is smaller than the aztecs. The thing is if he takes out Gilgamesh and Victoria, the game is as good as won.

The way I see it, these are his choices:

-Kill Gilgamesh, rebuild, kill Victoria, become the most unlucky immortal alive :p
- Expand East and South and receive Winston's wrath and whatever you throw at him
-Compromise and get turned into a fallout flamed husk :goodjob:

Nothing to see here :shifty:

"We must do something...."
"Or the world will be destined....."
"To death once more......"

Tracnar opened his eyes and looked down upon the world. Troubled already. Gods focused. One man. Montezuma.

From his Aetherian home, he shot a bolt of Aether towards the Aztec leader. As it descended into the world it slowed and gently settled into the skull residing upon Montezuma's decorative head piece. Unnoticed, it would watch and attempt to see just exactly what kind of man Montezuma was.

OOC: No changes.....but expect me to decide what kind of man Monty is by his actions in the coming round

"Montezuma." Spoke Nihil into the darkness. From his bedchamber, Montezuma heard the words. "Montezuma, do not heed the command of this lucky tree or whatever such god he is. This world is a world were only the strongest may survive and those pacifist cowards are surely not the strongest. The strongest is you and that is why I have chosen you to be my agent in this world. Accept my gifts or accept my wrath. Choose the destruction of the sumerian people or the destruction of your own. This is what you must do..."

"First build yourself an army of majestic proportions with my soldiers as its core. Take them through the path that I carved out for you. No man that can wield a weapon may be left save those few garrison guards. When you arrive at the edges of sumerian borders- wait. If you have done as I say at that point, some divine aid will soon be headed your way. Should you choose this path, my attitude towards you shall remain much unchanged"

"If you are feeling confident however, and feel that you do not need a nanny to hold your hand in battle then press onwards towards the capital city of the sumerians. Plunder it with your brave warriors and burn it to the ground. The same fate must soon follow every city in that heathen empire. Should you choose this path, you will have gained much respect from me and you will find my blessings greeting you at every turn"

___________

I did this to give Monty a chance at not having every god mad at him. It still leaves conflict though. Also because I reconsidered and figured out that destroying a civ is pretty hard when your entire army is 4 axes vs. 5 high level archers.

@Arsonist (and anyone else)

Don't forget to put 'NFTE' next to spoilers listing your changes. :p

Also...

(NFTE):
Spoiler :
The thing is if he takes out Gilgamesh and Victoria, the game is as good as won.
Not necessarily. It would give him more than enough land to win any normal game quite easily. But it might not be so easy if much of that land is, say, changed into tundra and desert. Or covered in super-regenerating jungle. :mwaha:

There's also the possibility that Pavlos, or one of his underworld buddies, might be prepared to do a spot of necromancy... Come to think of it, I quite like the idea of Zombie Victoria coming back to haunt Monty.

But I'm getting ahead of myself now. Let's see how things play out.

Thanatos went on with aiding his protegee. His land was much improved, and he had trained new soldiers for the Empire. But one thing troubled him... they were at war. A war, instigated by gods. Thanatos did not like his plans being disrupted by an immortal acting on the war... but the god probably had a similar goal in mind. Maybe he would find an ally in this god?

He simply waited for the mysterious god to return. He did not intend to reveal himself just yet.

NFTE:

Spoiler :
I'm taking a different approach to making the game interesting in the long run. I'm going to aid Shaka until he becomes a superpower, one that even Monty will have a hard time handling.

Oh, and Arsonist: Something was wrong with your edits because the -5 to Monty did not show up. Monty should now be hated by both Gil and Vicky.

"Doesn't it all seeeem sooo....cooold?"

The jester snickered at Montezuma, appearing behind him and leaning over his shoulder.

"Buddy boy, you've got quite a tangle to tango! How ever are you going to spring yourself free?"

The Aztecs watched in wonder as the strangely-clad man walked over their fields and into the capitol. The two guards on each side of the road brought their axes down on him, striking him to the ground. Perpentach did however raise himself again, and cackled as the axemen continued to pount him. After several minutes, the men were exhausted and the demigod had taken injuries that would kill a normal man a dozen times.

But Perpentach simply smoothened out the clothes before simply escaping the guards into town. Their exhaustion stopped them dead in their tracks.

---

A strange picture met Montezuma as he looked out his palacewindow... Climbing the roof on the other side of the street, a clown-clad man with an iron crown cackled maniacly. As the man spotted Montezuma, He stopped the cackling and yelled across the street.

"Your destiny inspires me, skullbearer,
this looks to be an interesting faire,
the most exciting show of all is to come,
when masters duel across your home,
if you think advice is far away,
find me wherever I may stay,
I will be here, with grin and cackle,
until someone else needs an oracle!

The madman stopped and looked curiously at the skull on Montezumas crown for several moments, before continuing.

"Haha, what a surprise, they are already here,
be cautious that thay may interfere,
for with power that is as godly, vast,
always comes the beast at last.
Make haste to conquer what you can,
before entangled in a godly plan,
if you want an encore, even more to see,
find me and say hello to Tracnar for me!"

With those words, the madman winked at the skull in Montezumas crown before simply jumping off the building. A horrible sound of breaking bones, brass bells and the madmans cackle was heard as he hit the ground. He quickly stood up, brushed the dust off his clothes and begun dancing down the street.

The point:
Perpentach stays in your lands until The Oracle is built somewhere else. If you build The Oracle (or conquer it), you will once again have access to Perpentach. His advice can reveal information you might or might not need, if you can understand his riddly answers. He will also affect the land he stays in with inspiration and madness in equal proportions.

Spoiler NFTE :
Perpentach is a completely insane, but brilliant demigod, a fusing between art, madness and cruelty is his domain. He knows of the other gods and has an almost oracle-like ability to predict their moves, but he keeps this information to himself - most of the time! He may be a valuable asset to any Immortal or God who wins his confidence.

At the moment, only Tracnar is fully aware of Perpentachs location and form. The other gods have a faint sentiment that something with a god-like appearance has entered the world, but due to the enter of Nihil and his counterpart, it is hard to say exactly who or where this has happened.

Phaelep scratched his chin. Damn that jester, he had taken his thing right out from under him.

Twirling in a circle, his form faded into that of a dark crystal, his true form. Hovering far above the world, his eyes took in everything that the planet had to offer. After scanning the surface, he took action - first, to his brother.

"Got to keep thing sporting, eh?" he said as he approached the path carved by his kin.

--------------

Montezuma had heard reports of wild forest animals fleeing towards civilized lands - and despite the boon in hunting, they refused to return to their more protected lands. But those warriors he had sent to investigate...they had changed.

Intent of being the scouting party for this supposed invasion of Gilgamesh, their desire for glory overwhelmed them and even now they gathered at the path. Could Montezuma control them?
