DNESR Resurrection

Hmm... So when's the update exactly expected to be posted?

supposed to be now, or a few hours ago actually

I would just like to apologise and assure you that I do hate myself and feel bad. Id want to die also, except i don’t think I could post or use a computer if i died.

Surprise surprise I wont be updating tonight. And after *****ing at people for orders :( I was kind of lazy yesterday, but ive been working on it literally all day today. Its mostly done apart from some stats, and the map. I really wanted to pull an all nighter and finish it, but my brain’s melted. I cant think straight (not that I think very well at other times). Plus my flash editor keeps crashing when im half way through doing the map.

It will be up tomorrow, or more like +18 hours, as soon as I can get online tomorrow, with nicer maps and pics and a lot less errors

Daftpanzer, I just have a small speech to say:

I am not kidding when I say that there are no other mods in Nesing that has ever combined such graphics with a brilliant flair in writing that makes us addicted to the nes. (toteone and mjm doesn't count, toteone's insane and mjm has a nes to mod) Your updates are very well done and we can't really expect you to update again with that kind of quality in only what? 5 days after the last update? Take faith in your abilities, calm down, and relax. Go sleep and if you're hungry, get some chinese food ;)

:agree: Alex is right, I've stuck with you so far because of the brilliance in the updates :D if it was anybody else then this would have fallen apart awhile ago, but not you Daft, you've got my faith and I'm sure everybody else can vouch theirs. Take it easy, get some sleep, and finish it in the morning, hey it's faster then your other updates so take pride in that. I won't be the first to claim I don't have a lazy day myself, cause it ain't true and I'm fairly certain a lot of others can claim the same as well ;). Do what you always do and I'm sure it'll turn out great, now get some sleep and we'll see whats in store for us tomorrow.

 Did I tell you you scare me sometimes Kentharu....?

Remember, Chinese food solves all problems. :D Not the evil sushi even though I just went to a Japanese Sushi restaurant... My dad believes in being "open minded" about everything....

Don't worry, I'll wait. Hell, I too often have to spend well over a day to finish an update (hopefully it won't be the case for me this time...).

Can I still send some sort of General orders?

If not - NPC me and do what you think I, and Symphony, would do. I mean it when I say this, I dont want to be simply NPCed and ignored - this means investing what I have been into the war against Rome, and trying my hardest to crush them. Im just saying this to make sure, but I know you do an excellent job at NPCing nations, and I trust you to treat Byzantium and the Mayans fairly. (also, invest all possible industry and economy into rebuilding my war machine to wtfpwnz0r the romans and venetians - invest particularly in air and naval forces )

If you only knew that daftpanzer plans to throw an asteriod into Asia in this nes :mischief: :p

should we expect the update today, or tomorrow. I don't want to stay up, but I will if I have to ;)

e gad alex! that would be absolutely.... SMASHING!!
oooh man i am corny :)

Well it'll wipe out your allies ;) Which will lead to an invasion of Japan by America :D

Apologies for 24+6 hours delay... I would have gone online earlier to say how long it would take, of course i kept thinking 30 more minutes... I ended up needing an all nighter to finish it after all.

I wrote a story for Rome because I felt like it, and they were NPC so nobody else could. Updates so late because of my wasting time on things like this over previous few days. Im really going to think about shorter/faster updates now

Anyway…

Pisae, Latium, March 7th, 4185 AF…
It was a chilly, cloudless night in Pisae, the coastal city which had been the makeshift capitol of Latium for the past six months. 1n the courtyard of the regional government building, a group of Roman soldiers had gathered round a pile of burning books, papers, and furniture. The Roman High Command (an improvised government, formed from the scattered survivors of the senate) was preparing to evacuate by sea, ordering most of their documents to be destroyed, along with anything else that wasn’t essential to keep or practical to transport. There were busy shouts from inside, and more pieces of paper and various other objects were continually being thrown out of the higher windows, raining down on the troops below.

The soldiers had decided to start drinking, using up the last supplies of imported celtic whiskey and french wine. They were now quite drunk, but nobody was going to discipline them. In fact, their commanding Centurion had joined them in getting drunk. The organisation of the army had finally broken down. What was left was really a network of well-armed guerrillas and resistance fighters. Venetian and Dutch units were scattered, many already trying to flee the peninsular, and trying to take the best of the surviving Roman troops and weapons with them. The front lines had broken up, and Byzantine units were already probing the outskirts of Pisae and the other remaining pockets of resistance. Artillery fire could be heard landing not far away. Byzantine fighter-bombers could also be heard, regularly buzzing around overhead. A phonograph player was doing its best to drown out the noise, playing a record of old patriotic latin tunes.

Of course, drinking wasn’t exactly a good idea when preparing for a battle. But it helped numb their feelings and thoughts of the immediate future. Or at least that was the idea… Some tried to joke, to sing, to enjoy one last party... But in spite of being drunk, the mood remained sombre. A couple of attractive young female government officers came and joined the troops at the bonfire, sharing a sudden desire to consume large amounts of alcohol… But even this did not lift the mood. It seemed clear to all now that the war was totally lost, the last hope of saving their culture and nation was gone.

A few years ago, Rome was one of the most heavily militarised nations in the world. In terms of available firepower per population and land area, it was the most well defended country of all. The Romans had known that a victory against the resources of the Byzantine Empire was basically impossible. Instead, they had tried to make the war too expensive, too bloody for Byzantium to continue to the end. But the Byzantines hadn’t stopped, they had kept coming… driven on by their neo-imperialist zeal, and by the incessant ‘Romanoi’ propaganda. Two years passed, the death tolls on all sides reaching into the millions, but still they kept coming…

A salvo of shellfire suddenly landed much closer, making the ground shake violently. Glass could be heard shattering. The phonograph player made a sharp tearing sound, then it went silent, and had to be helped back on track. Some of the troops looked sober all of a sudden, sharp and alert, while others remained unmoved in their slouched positions and carried on drinking.

Pisae was now on the front line, this time there was nowhere to fall back to except the ocean. Other pockets of resistance were stilling holding out elsewhere in Latium, but they were all surrounded and now impossible to reach by land. Surrender was a possibility, indeed many Romans had already surrendered. Most were willing to be ‘Romanoi’ rather than dead. But many of these soldiers were determined to keep fighting. Their last orders had been to defend the port at Pisae as long as possible. And in any case, many preferred to fight to the end rather than put themselves at the mercy of this enemy, who had destroyed their country along with many of their families.

The group of soldiers were in the middle of discussing whether to go inside or not, when another soldier came running out of the government building, seemingly overjoyed about something, but also clearly uneasy and intimidated as he saw the blatant misconduct of his boozing comrades. With jittery hands, he saluted and handed a note to the centurion. “Sir, radio message from General Lucretius at Veii”

The group stopped talking and fixed their attention on their centurion as he read the note. What ever it was, he did not share the enthusiasm of the courier. His expression was quite the opposite.

“What nonsense is this?” He knew he was drunk, but not that drunk… “Ask for conformation of this message!”

The courier saluted again and hurried back inside, seemingly much less happy than before. Everyone kept their gaze fixed on the Centurion.

“Its nothing!”

Either the Generals have gone insane, he thought, or the message was some half-assed attempt to raise morale. Either way it was a fantasy. When it came down to it, he would much rather face the cold truth…

Another shell landed close by. Byzantine troops were getting closer…

“Now lets find some cover! Gather up your weapons!”

The phonograph continued to play on to the abandoned courtyard, surviving several nearby shell impacts until finally being dislodged by the vibrations and silenced once again.

Spring-Summer 4185 AF (Update 7)

awwe.jpeg

This year, things go from bad to chaotic. Large parts of Asia remain in flames, as the wars and civil wars continue to draw in more and more nations. While America-Europa still remains calm, it seems the world is heading into a new ‘great war’. Meanwhile, Celtonia seems to have its global interventionist role stolen by another nation...

The Fall of Latium
Byzantium’s long running war against the Romans and the ASP in Latium seemed to be coming to its conclusion. The well-ordered Byzantine forces continued an all-out attack, finally reaching the coast at south east end of the peninsular. By now, the Byzantines greatly outnumbered the disorganised ASP armies, and had almost complete control of the skies. The Romans still had fairly strong forces on the ground, but they were broken up into pockets as they were pushed up against the sea. As the Roman troops rallied to defend the last few coastal cities, they were quickly surrounded and isolated by the Byzantines.

p47_rockets.jpeg

(Byzantine fighter-bomber supporting the advance with rocket fire)

The recent battle of the Venetian channel had bought some time for the surviving ASP navy to help evacuate troops from Latium. The two Venetian aircraft carriers kept the reduced Byzantine fleet occupied with a series of skirmishes and pursuits in the seas north of Venice. Venetian and Dutch forces were able to begin evacuating, while Roman forces tried to hold the line… But many retreating troops were still cut off and trapped by the Byzantines, and had to surrender. Those that made it to port took more losses from air attacks as they tried to board ship. The Venetian expedition force made it back to Venice with roughly one-third of the troops it had set out with. Meanwhile, the Dutch expedition force was almost completely wiped out, and very few of its units made it out of Latium in fighting condition.

Reluctantly, the survivors of the Roman government prepared for exile in Venice. The ASP commanders also urged the Roman troops to get out while they could, and some units did begin leaving for Venice. There are also rumours that several Roman officers, along with some of their elite troops, have deserted the ASP altogether and have been evacuated to safety by various neutral countries in exchange for their military services. But many of the Roman soldiers stayed behind, and the fighting dragged on as Byzantines poured their firepower into the last remaining strongholds…

Meanwhile, the island of Crete remains in a state of anarchy as pro-Byzantine militia continued to wear down the Venetians, helped by occasional Byzantine air and naval attacks. The Venetian army continues to hold on to the island, but only just.

The Battle of Kurskuchal
Throughout the previous winter, the people of Copan had been willing their troops onwards, the entire nation gripped by news from the front. Everyone knew, this offensive was the only chance for victory. Every day had brought news of new gains... Troops were less than 200 miles from Zeeland, then 150 miles, 120 miles, 100 miles, 90 miles… And then, the good news had stopped…

flowertank.jpeg

(Copanese light tank, abandoned somewhere in Yaxchilan)

The Copanese advance had been halted at the small town of Kurskuchal, in the province of Yaxchilan. The Copanese lines had left a large bulge around the town. After the massive battles of last year, both sides had paused for breath. Only one good road remained open to the Mayans through southern Yaxchilan, and it was still dangerously close to the front line. Mayan command was determined to stamp out this bulge as soon as possible, to remove the head of the Copanese offensive and relieve pressure on occupied Holland. Although Mayan forces were still thinly spread, and ‘Copper Viper Army’ was still outnumbered by nearly 2 to 1 in Yaxchilan, an ambitious and aggressive plan of attack was soon set in motion. The Mayans knew their experienced mechanised forces were still superior to the Copanese. Mayan hopes were raised by the arrival of a handful of new ‘Kamaxtli-B’ tanks, which had even heavier armour and firepower.

Mayan forces now struck out with a great pincer movement. The Copanese commanders had been expecting counter-attacks, but not so soon, and not on such a scale as this. Once again, there were now tremendous all-out tank battles raging across the countryside. The Mayans attacked with great ferocity, and soon managed to outmanoeuvre their enemy. Simultaneously, a furious air battle was raging overhead, as the Copanese and Mayan airforces concentrated on the area. The massing of so many tanks and vehicles on the open terrain made an ideal target for air attack, but each side was also desperate to protect their own ground forces.

kurskuchal.jpeg

The area around Kurskuchal was soon littered with burned-out tanks, crashed planes, and hundreds of thousands of dead soldiers. Fires began to rage out of control across the dry grasslands, covering the region in thick smoke… The Mayans ploughed on through the hellish battlefield and eventually achieved their main goal, as their pincers met up behind Kurskuchal and trapped a large chunk of the Copanese army. But the Copanese commanders forbade retreat, not wanting to give up any of their hard-won gains. They ordered their trapped soldiers to remain put until they could be rescued, although that might be impossible. The Copanese army has lost many more soldiers, tanks and artillery pieces in the fighting. But the Mayan victory came at a high cost... Many of the best Mayan mechanised forces had also been destroyed.

Elsewhere, the Mayans had bought enough time for ‘Jade Tiger’ army to finish off the last of the serious Dutch resistance, all but destroying the Dutch army in Geldre. A few scattered units managed to evacuate by sea, but not without the loss of several ships to the Mayan navy and airforce. The Mayans then moved into Flandern, attacking the under-manned fortifications from behind. Mayan units even began to probe across the Flandern/Copan border, causing panic in Copan.

In the north, the Egyptian army tried a more cautious attack into the jungles of Lazapa, but was still badly mauled by the well-prepared forces of the Mayan ‘Iron Wolf’ army, with few casualties on the Mayan side. The Arequipan rebellion continued to spread, and the rebels managed to capture and destroy a section of the ‘Trans-Continental Highway’. Work on this enormous project has stalled in recent years, due to Mayan and Byzantine war efforts. Although pushed back from the highway section, Mayan garrisons are still holding out in other parts of Arequipa.

Meanwhile, Mayan propaganda praised their heroic army at Kurskuchal for the ‘greatest victory in Mayan history’. With Egypt not seeming like much of a threat, and with most of the Dutch lands secured, Mayan confidence was restored. Although Copan was not yet defeated, the crisis seemed to be over, as Mayan forces could now begin to attack them on other fronts.

Mayans: -7 land power (extra tank, halftrack and mobile artillery losses), -2 air power
Copan: -12 land power (extra tank, artillery and conscript losses), -5 air power (dive-bombers lost)
Holland: -3 land power (1 army lost), -3 naval power
Egypt: -6 land power, -1 air power
Arequipa: -1 land power

China and Japan invade Neuw Zeeland island
The Dutch made an attempt to fortify the island with their surviving soldiers from Latium and Geldre, but it was too little too late. The remnants of the Dutch navy were chased away by the Mayan fleet, even before the Chinese and half of the Japanese fleet arrived with their combined invasion force. The GDI now had an impressive show of naval power in the area.

This time, Chinese and Japanese troops were fully coordinating their efforts. Japanese carrier aircraft pounded the strongpoints on Neuw Zeeland, as their elite marine troops invaded from the east. At the same time, Chinese troops hit the northern beaches. Foreign observers also noted that the Chinese fleet was looking more modern overall, and was without its old steamships and sailships. Chinese ground forces were also looking surprisingly well-equipped, with more modern rifles and machine guns.

chizs.jpeg

(Chinese ship on fire after hitting a mine)

The small and ill-equipped Dutch garrisons made a brave last stand, but could not hope to contain the two beachheads at once. The battle was soon over, and it was announced that China would take possession of the whole island. Several Chinese ships took damage from mines during the landings, while the Japanese were more fortunate. Otherwise, casualties were light on all sides.

As with Aruga, it seems the Scandinavians had attempted to back an uprising against Dutch rule on Neuw Zeeland and declare an independent state. However, there was not much time for this plan to get of the ground, and the population on this island was almost totally ethnic Dutch and loyal to the government. In any case, it seemed unlikely that the Japanese and Chinese would have called off the attack. However, unlike Aruga, the population of the island was entirely opposed to the GDI invasion and will not easily accept Chinese rule.

Assassination attempt on US President
The US president Andrew Jackson was gunned down in Chicago, scene of the fascist uprisings of a few years ago. The president has survived a shot to the chest, and is apparently recovering well, soon to be discharged from hospital. The gunman fired from a distance and has not yet been caught. Rumours have spread of a socialist conspiracy to destabilise the USA, being carried out by the Alaskans with help from the Celts and Iroquois. Meanwhile, the president has gained popularity following the shooting. A recent opinion poll put his approval rate at 68%. A presidential election is due to be held later this year, and the president was campaigning for votes at the time of the assassination attempt.

Fighting continues in Alaska
The USA’s superior military power did not dent the determination of the Alaskans to fight back with all means at their disposal. Alaska’s airforce had been all but destroyed in the first days of the invasion, but a few biplanes still survived, many of them hidden in camouflaged shelters, warehouses, even in caves. Alaskan command managed to organise a final attack with all these surviving aircraft, to cause as much damage as possible to their own former oilfields in the west. At all costs, the USA would not be allowed to benefit from its invasion.

US forces were on high alert around the oilwells, but the sudden air attack still caught them by surprise. Most of the low-flying Alaskan planes made it to their target. But the biplanes could not carry enough firepower to do serious damage to the extensive oilwells, and the damaged areas were not put out of action for very long. American artillery and flak around the oil wells made sure few of the planes made it back. Nonetheless, news of the attack helped to raise the morale of the Alaskan soldiers.

At the same time, the Alaskans also gathered their handful of remaining tanks, halftracks and mobile artillery for a ground attack on the oilfields in support of the airstrike. It was a brave move, but never had much hope of succeeding. The USA had already brought far more tanks and artillery onto the island, and they stopped the Alaskan advance dead in its tracks, long before it broke through to the oilwells. The Alaskans lost all but a handful of their armoured vehicles, and fell back on guerrilla tactics.

Guerrilla warfare was actually proving much more effective, especially after the appearance of the ‘Biathlon’ Militia. Biathlon had been declared the main sport of Alaska just prior to the war, and involved physical fitness and outdoor training in cold conditions. Such athletes made ideal recruits for Alaskan infantry and militia. Although the actual number of Biathlon athletes was small, they formed a core around which larger units could be trained and assembled. These new militia units came to symbolise Alaskan resistance and were a further boost to morale.

Meanwhile, the USA’s troops had been angered by suggestions that Alaska was somehow responsible for the assassination attempt on their president. The Alaskan guerrilla raids did not discourage them, and resentment and bitterness continued to grow deeper on both sides. The USA made one last demand for the surrender of their former ally, warning that failure to do so would mean “Alaska shall be destroyed with no chance of rebirth in the future”. When Alaska once again refused, the US airforce did its best to carry out the threat. Most of its bomber aircraft were now concentrated in and around Alaska, operating from carriers and captured airfields. The Alaskan capitol, really just a large town, was now subjected to the full force of the US air power in a sudden and brutal aerial bombardment. Few buildings were left standing, and there were large civilian casualties. The last hope of repairing US-Alaskan relations was now gone.

Alaskabomb.jpeg

(The Alaskan capitol, after the destruction by US aircraft)

As weather conditions improved, the USA’s armoured divisions were soon rolling forwards into the flattened ruins of the Alaskan capitol, encountering little resistance. US reinforcements arrived - the ‘Army of Thor’ arrived to take control of the west, allowing the ‘Army of the Valkyries’ to make an all out attack on the east. There was now a huge amount of US troops on the island, roughly four times the number of Alaskan soldiers and militia. A handful of the new US rocket-launchers also made an appearance. These mobile rocket vehicles, also called ‘Valkyries’, were especially terrifying for any inexperienced troops who had the misfortune to encounter them.

valk.jpeg

(US ‘Valkyrie’ rocket launchers)

Despite the bravest defence, the front-line Alaskan forces were now overwhelmed and scattered, and all the island’s major towns were soon captured… but the war didn’t end. Officially, the island is conquered, but Alaskan independence survives inside shifting pockets of resistance. Alaska seems prepared for a long guerrilla war.

The US has also kept a tight naval blockade of Alaska, with a powerful naval force in the area. Several Alaskan gunboats and light ships were sunk as they attempted to flee the island with troops onboard, and the US took a number of prisoners. However, the Alaskan cabinet managed to escape in a long-range Celtic transport plane. The plane managed to land at night and land at a remote snow-strip, before refuelling and taking off again, flying low all the way under the nose of US radar arrays. Despite a few close encounters with trees and other tall objects, the Celtic pilots and their passengers eventually made it back to Celtonia across the north eastern ocean. An Alaskan government-in-exile was then set up in the Celtic capitol.

Prime Minister Icmarin is believed to have stayed in Alaska, but has not yet been captured by US forces.

Iroquois Nation declares War on Byzantium!

As the last pockets of Roman resistance were being crushed in Latium, Byzantine command began to receive some disturbing reports... A Byzantine naval patrol plane reported coming under fire from a number of unknown enemy aircraft in the sea east of Venice, and then contact was lost. It was first blood to Force Otsinekwar (force yellow), and the first real military action of the Iroquois Nation since the end of the second ‘great war’, nearly a hundred years ago. It may yet turn out to be the start of a third great war.

Hours past before other Byzantine patrols later confirmed the presence of a large and apparently very hostile Iroquois task force, heading straight for Latium. The official declaration of war did not come until Iroquois carrier aircraft had already begun attacking Byzantine positions on the Latium coast. The Iroquois Nation declared Byzantium to be a “threat to world peace and maritime trade”. The last remaining Roman defenders were overjoyed when they got the news, and were now more determined than ever to keep fighting.

Force Otsinekwar soon crashed ashore, benefiting from the bewilderment of the Byzantine troops, many of whom had been in the middle of celebrating their apparent victory. Several beachheads were established, based around some of the Roman coastal cities that had kept fighting. But Byzantine forces soon began to recover and react to the new threat. Iroquois aircraft flying from Venice joined the carrier aircraft as a new air battle began in the skies over Latium.

dnrroma.jpeg

(Iroquois forces advance, somewhere on the Latium coast)

On the ground, the Iroquois soon realised that the situation really was worse than they were hoping for. Latium was now crammed full of powerful, battle-hardened Byzantine divisions, while most of the ASP forces had already disintegrated and fled. Even if the full invasion force could link up with all the surviving Roman troops, they would still be outnumbered by at least 2 to 1. The invasion force would almost be fighting against the whole Byzantine military by themselves. It was impossible to go ahead with their original plan for full-scale attack... Nonetheless, the commanders of Force Otsinekwar remained committed to the invasion and continued to establish the beachheads. At sea, at least, the combined Iroquois and Venetian forces had a large advantage over the Byzantine navy, at least while many of the Byzantine ships were undergoing repair.

On land, there have been a few short and fierce battles across the hilly countryside and ruined cities, as the Iroquois attempted to link up with various pockets of Roman resistance – succeeding in places, but being pushed back in others. The Iroquois ‘Wolf’ tank saw its first combat, proving to be a more or less equal match for the Byzantine ‘Kataphractoi’. The Wolf was actually better suited to the hilly terrain, while having a slightly less powerful gun. The elite Mohawk troops also proved to be the equal of the Byzantine’s Varangian shock troops, as they met in several fierce battles amongst the ruins of roman towns. The aircraft of the two powers were also evenly matched. The Byzantines had superior numbers of all these forces, while the Iroquois had the initiative and the element of surprise on their side.

All the while, the Byzantine generals have been steadily gathering and reorganising their forces. Unless Iroquois or ASP reinforcements arrive, it seems that one last Byzantine offensive could push the Iroquois back into the sea and take the peninsular completely. The war in Latium has now involved no less than five nations, no other part of the world has seen so much concentrated firepower and destruction. Latium is a smoking ruin. For many of the remaining civilians, it is hard to understand why so much blood continues to be spilt over this land.

Iroquois Nation declares War on Mayan Republic!

Force Otsinekwar had not sailed alone. Force Onekwenhtara (Red) had sailed on via Sicilia and the Dutch islands of Ruyter and Alkmaar. The Mayan navy was in the area and detected the Iroquois task force, but did not seek to engage it at first. The combined Mayan fleet was actually larger, but was unsure of the size and the intentions of the Iroquois force.

An official declaration of war only came when the task force reached Zeeland. By then some skirmishes were already taking place between Mayan and Iroquois ships. Meanwhile, the Mayan airforce was fighting inland against the Copanese, so the Mayan navy lacked air support. The Iroquois had landed some aircraft in Zeeland, and also had a carrier and a powerful modern battleship amongst their ships. The Mayan admirals were not prepared to risk a major battle. They withdrew through the straight of Zeeland and joined up with the Chinese and Japanese forces off Neuw Zeeland, but these were still busy with the invasion of that island. The Iroquois made landfall in the last surviving Dutch province, and have managed to keep their long supply lines open for now.

irozee.jpeg

(View of the Zeeland coast from an Iroquois vessel)

The people of Zeeland had seen Holland collapse around them. Now they gratefully watched as Iroquois tanks and troops disembarked and travelled northwards to the Mayan border. The Copanese forces trapped at Kurskuchal were less than a hundred miles away. The Iroquois had a force that could break the back of the Mayan war effort… Unfortunately, it was some time before the Iroquois could advance. Fierce storms in the Sea of Holland had disrupted the process of unloading all the supplies and weapons. On top of this, the total route sailed by Force Otsinekwar was equal to more than half way around the world. It had taken months to prepare this task force, and several more months to actually reach the destination, with several stops for re-supply along the way. The whole force was now fairly disorganised after its long journey.

At present, the Iroquois force has only just begun to attack out of the mountains of Zeeland. The fighting so far has been chaotic and inconclusive. The Mayans had some warning, and had scrambled to reorganise their forces while trying to maintain the siege of the Copanese at Kurskuchal. Meanwhile, there have been reports of a third large Iroquois fleet near Akwesane, on the other side of Neuw Zeeland island. It seems there could still be a naval showdown on the Horizon, with the Iroquois and surviving Dutch ships on one side against a combined Mayan, Chinese and Japanese fleet.

The ASP could only dream of having the Iroquois superpower on their side. However, whether even this will be enough to defeat the GDI remains to be seen. At any rate, the Iroquois have already seriously endangered both Byzantium’s and Chicen Itza’s plans for victory. In the meantime, the Iroquois Nation seems to have stolen Celtonia’s reputation as a global ‘peacekeeper’.

Tartarus invades Hittite Empire
The Hittite government forces continued to chip away at rebel positions in Aleppo, and the navy maintained a blockade of the Tyrana coast. The Hittites also kept a close eye on Tartarus across the narrow straights. Tartar agents had been suspected of sparking the rebellion and instability in the Hittite Republic, in fact the Tartar leaders had basically admitted as much. Although a small island nation, Tartarus had built up a threatening military of its own. Relations between the two nations were not very good at all. But when the attack came, it was still something of a surprise for the Hittites.

tyrbomb.jpeg

(Tartar bombers fly over the Hittite coastline)

The Tartarus airforce began with a large surprise attack on the Hittite navy, sending many ships to the bottom of the sea off Tyrana. The Tartar navy was already the largest before the attack, and it now seriously outgunned the surviving ships. But despite their naval and air superiority, the Tartars did not have everything their own way, and lost many ships of their own in the following battles. Eventually the remainder of the Hittite navy was forced to make a run for port in Hitta and Uguarit, running a gauntlet of constant air attack. But before the Tartars took control of the coast, their flagship dreadnaught was sunk by Hittite submarines. For the first time, the submarine was proved a powerful weapon in its own right, and not just as an accessory to the surface fleet. These subs continued to harass the Tartar invasion forces as they headed across the narrow channel towards the capitol province of Hitta.

On land, the Hittites had already begun moving their reserve army to the coast to repel any invasion. Attacking across a narrow straight made things easier for the Tartars, as did having a local superiority of 2 to1 in troops, and even higher in tanks and vehicles. But still, the invasion came close to collapse as determined Hittite defenders took a heavy toll on the invaders. Beaches were strewn with corpses and burning ships. The Tartars eventually made in inland, thanks to sheer weight of numbers, combined with heavy naval and air support. The tanks and motorised divisions could now come into play, but the advance did not get particularly far before running out of steam. The Tartar troops were thoroughly demoralised from the losses suffered in the landing, and were not yet ready to battle through the streets of the Hittite capitol. They turned their attentions to securing the beachhead.

xa.jpeg

Hitta, Tyrana and Tartarus have now created their own war, seemingly isolated from the larger conflicts that surround them. Tartarus has announced its support of Tyrana, and declared a ‘war of unification’. But support for the war is not particularly high, many Tartars are still angry about their government’s desertion from the ASP alliance. The Hittite government is also facing another crisis of confidence, as it seems the government forces cannot win on two fronts at once. Meanwhile, Tyrana is becoming more established as an independent state, over a year since its rebellion from the Hittites.

Manu Rebels Surrender
The Incan civil war is at an end, as the leaders of the pro-fascist Manu rebellion are granted free passage into exile via Celtonia. Rumour is that the Celts have actually sent them on to the island nation of Molde. Meanwhile, many of the soldiers who fought for the rebel cause have been allowed to rejoin the government army. This has caused some ill-feeling, though it is recognised that many rebels did not have much choice, or were acting out of loyalty to their commanders.

The civil war was brief and claimed only a few thousand lives, thanks to the government’s swift and well-planned counter offensive. The fledgling democracy has shown itself to be stronger than most people thought, confidence and support for the government has increased.

Incas: +8 land power, +1 Air power (biplanes)

Hydro-Electric Dam completed in Andes province
Despite the violence and instability of the past few years, work on this major project had steadily continued. Rebel forces had threatened to destroy the dam on several occasions. Its completion coincides with the end of the civil war. It has become a symbol of Incan national unity, and has done much to boost the morale of the people, as well as the infrastructure and industry of the region.

Incan Official makes anti-Mayan Speech
A senior Incan official caused controversy by saying that an independent Portugal would be immediately invaded and annexed by the Mayans, and that the portuguese people need to remain part of the Inca nation for their own survival. The official soon apologised for the comments, but Incan newspapers began to print articles about this, and it seems many people share this viewpoint, both Incan and Portuguese alike. There have since been many arguments and a certain amount of ill feeling has been caused between the Incan and Mayan nations.

Meanwhile, the portuguese separatists seem to be splitting into two camps. Many are calling for national unity and support for democracy in the wake of the civil war, while a few are becoming more and more violent in their resistance of the government. There have been several bomb attacks on government buildings in portugal, but so far these have not caused much damage.

The Incan people seem to be heading in a different direction from the rest of the GDI. The Incan leaders have made a strong effort to establish a fully democratic state. So far they have not involved their country in wars against the ASP, and have not helped the Mayan war effort either. There is now a growing anti-GDI feeling throughout the Inca nation, not just in the portuguese region.

French Empire Declared!
The Committee of National Defence is no more. Armand Bonaparte is now Emperor Armand I. The new system of government is similar to Byzantine and Japanese governments, the Emperor sharing some power with a Senate in domestic issues. But the new empire also has a distinct lean towards socialist policy. Meanwhile, the Emperor’s subjects have been assured equal rights, with no discrimination of different religions or ethnicity. Universal male suffrage has been granted.

(A competition was held for the design of a new flag, the winning design is supposed to symbolise the rebirth of France as well as honouring the Frankish kingdoms of old)

The French people have generally welcomed this turn of events. Pro-monarchist and pro-imperialist attitudes had been increasing in recent years. Even those who were against an imperialist regime are celebrating the end of the uncertainty, if nothing else. Meanwhile, the French economic recovery is turning into an economic boom. Many French traders and businessmen now have more money than they can spend, as sharp rise in profits has outgrown the availability of modern luxuries. Much of the austerity from the days of the Fouche regime still remains, but this will probably not last long.

One of the first orders of the new emperor was for the expansion of the navy, particularly the construction of another traditional dreadnaught capitol ship to join the one already in service. Several industrial leaders offered to contribute their own resources to the project for free, in order to prove themselves and boost the profile of their industrial organisations. Some of the newly-wealthy citizens also contributed their assets, perhaps looking to gain political favour. The end result is that a larger, more powerful modern battleship is now under construction, at no extra cost to the government. Several new destroyers and cruisers have also been launched.

French confidence is increasing, it seems only a matter of time before France is a major world power once more. Meanwhile, the anarchy and unrest that has plagued the nation in recent years has all but died out. Only a few anti-government groups still remain, they do not seem to be much of a threat to the new imperial-socialist regime.

New unrest in Celtonia
Fresh unrest has been sparked throughout Celtonia by the widespread publication of an alleged ‘secret’ document, allegedly stolen from the GDI headquarters in Chichen Itza. It claims that the other nations of the GDI have a secret plan to launch a sneak attack on Celtonia to destroy its military, after which each GDI nation is to receive a share of Celtonia’s territory.

Cimner Elouh has publicly dismissed the documents as a ludicrous forgery, and has appealed for calm. Various experts have agreed that this is most likely a work of propaganda by anti-GDI factions in Celtonia.

Celts create ‘Nova Scotia’ puppet state
The occupied province of Acadia is no more. Celtonia has refused to hand over the territory to the USA, or to restore the old Acadian nation to independence. Instead, Celtonia has announced the new ‘protectorate state’ of Nova Scotia. This has caused much anger from pro-USA citizens in the area, but these are in the minority. Most people are pro-celtic or pro-independence, and Celtonia has tried to appeal to both these groups.

Meanwhile, the USA has gone ahead with the reorganisation of the province of Heidelberg into the new state of Carolina. This has not gone down well with the ethnic-germans in the area, who have continued to protest against US rule and demand reunion with Germany.

US Intelligence incriminates Alaska
Following the investigation into the shooting of the president, more details have emerged from US intelligence sources. The USA claims to have evidence that Alaska was involved in the uprisings in Chicago and the anti-democratic coup in Acadia. But this does not convince many foreign observers, many doubt that the mainly-socialist Alaskans would have gone so far to support fascist uprisings. In any case, there has been a steady increase of anti-alaskan, anti-socialist and anti-fascist feelings among US citizens. Public attitudes are now verging on paranoia and deep suspicion of many foreign powers.

Meanwhile, US militarisation seems to be is increasing… A new aircraft carrier, USS Washington, is currently under construction, and the US army is beginning to rival the Iroquois in size, if not in weapons technology.

Iroquois ‘Energy Distribution’ project completed
People living in rural areas of the Iroquois nation now have electricity for the first time, thanks to the government’s investment in this major project. Remote farms and mining towns have also received modern equipment. The infrastructure and economy of the Iroquois nation will benefit from this.

Scandinavian Computer breakthrough
The Scandinavian scientists have developed their own re-programmable computers to rival the USA’s technology. New machines are already being developed by the government to replace the existing tabulation machines and improve the efficiency of vote-counting across the nation. The democratic Allthing system will benefit greatly from this. The Scandinavian science establishment has also set to work with the using of computers for scientific calculations.

Germany opens Autobahn network
The Autobahn has been hailed as the most modern and efficient roadway system in the world, and will continue to be for many years to come, as it is capable of handling many times the current level of road traffic. The economy has already begun to benefit from the ease of travel between the major towns and cities. Germany now joins Celtonia and the Iroquois Nation as having the most developed infrastructure in the world.

News from Japan
Japan has announced new political freedoms for its various islands, each of which can now elect two representatives to the government in Honshu. This promising move has eased tensions with the nationalists in Aruga for now. The Emperor still retains executive power in most cases.

The government has also begun funding a ‘transvision’ project, aiming to create a network of picture transmission stations and public viewing screens where citizens can gather to watch broadcasts. Most foreign observers are highly sceptical, few believe that ‘transvision’ will be able to produce recognisable images, and will have no benefit over conventional radio. But Japan’s best electronics scientists have been put to work on making this happen, and so far they seem confident of success. They even claim that picture-receiving devices will eventually be affordable enough for citizens to have them in their own homes.

Mexican Archaeological University
Spain has helped fund the creation of a University of Archaeology in Mexico. This will function as a place of education and research, as well as a museum to house the rescued Aztec and other ancient artefacts. Spanish involvement in Mexico continues to increase. The Mexican army is also being trained and organised by Spanish officers.

Alliance Update:
zxzxzzx.png

Scandinavia and Spain are leading their own strong alliance, which continues to grow in strength economically.
The NOD remains strong, its reach spreading with the US forces into Alaska.
The ASP has been rescued from destruction by the unexpected intervention of the Iroquois forces, and continues to be helped by Copan and Egypt.
The GDI’s control of Asia is not yet assured, it seems much depends on the actions of the member nations which have currently stayed out of the war.

NPC Diplo:
To Iroquois
From Celtonia
Your wild and reckless attacks on Byzantine and Mayan forces are dangerous and threaten to further destabilise the world. We demand you withdraw your declaration of war on these nations so as to avoid retaliatory measures from the GDI alliance. We remind you that Celtonia is a dedicated member of this alliance, despite the false rumours of dissent and protests that you may have heard.

We continue to mourn our dead sailors and airmen that were killed in the battle off Acadia, which is still fresh in our memory. Celtic troops are eager to avenge them, and will need no encouragement to fight against your forces.

To USA
From Celtonia
We will not recognise Alaska as a US territory. We will continue to acknowledge the legitimate independent Alaskan government. There will be no discussion on the long-term future of the Acadia/Nova Scotia territory as long as US forces occupy Alaska.

We remain hopeful that the US leadership will remember the importance of good relations with our nation, and will take the appropriate steps.

To Iroquois
From Venice
We propose a new alliance, the ‘United Nations’, jointly based in Salamanca and Venice, and dedicated to the defeat of ruthless imperialist aggressors throughout the world.

For now, the ASP has agreed to allow Iroquois forces full access to its territory and supplies.

The Doge expresses his personal gratitude to the Iroquois people, for having the strength and courage to enter a war that was not their own in the name of global justice.

Notes:
Orders deadline – ***midnight GMT Monday 13th march*** [not saturday]

Its now Autumn-Winter 4185 AF

The southern half of the world map will actually get warmer weather in ‘winter’ and cold weather in ‘summer’, which might affect battles and stuff.

Capitol ships/carriers listed as a + in the stats are either still being built or being repaired from heavy damage.

Nation descriptions in the stats are mostly very out of date, I will fix that soon.

I hereby accuse Icmancin of stealing the idea for his ‘Biathlon Militia’ UU from the new series of Battlestar Galactica.

Anyone reading this wants to join? I keep letting the front page get out of date but there are tons of NPCs at the mo.
