Do people look down on you for being a gamer?

Now person #1 and her friends is trying to claim that I said SimCity doesn't involve sitting on your [butt].

I go, "Where the [omitted] did I say SimCity involved dancing around the room like a freaking idiot?"

Then they try sending more crap my way, which I manage to debunk but they deny it because since I make a few typos I'm apparently an idiot. (Never mind their typos.). I point those out and they mention my IQ is only 95 while theirs is 180 so I'm not worthy of talking to them. Finally, I go, "Sorry, I don't talk to ignorant people."

I'd post the convo but it's too long and has way too many curse words to replace with "[omitted]".

By physics they mean being able to move and place objects in a realistic way and have them act realistically, you don't need a calculator and a degree in physics to solve those puzzles in game, and you shouldn't. (Although VALVe could make them less trivial, but I think it's just that they are simple puzzles and to say otherwise is wrong).
The point I was trying to make was that Valve's physics puzzles are simple and not at all mentally challenging. It's applying concepts that you have previously observed. The puzzles don't require you to know a thing about physics.

I suggest removing those idiots off your IM lists.
Quoted For Truth.

You're confusing physics here, this kind of physics puzzle uses a physics engine in a game, moving objects around which is possible due to the physics engine. I don't see why you have to calculate a whole bunch of physics to call something a physics puzzle.

I'm not saying it's not physics. What I'm trying to say is it's not "intellectually challenging physics". To be honest, there is no real line between challenging and simple, but I think the puzzle in Half-Life fall in the latter category. The calculator thing was more an example of challenging, not something I look for in games.

EDIT: That said this thread has outlived its usefulness, so it's probably best to let it die, IMHO.

People look down on me for being a gamer. They say I should stop being so "sad" and that I should "get a life".

I look down on them because clearly their own lives are so pitiful that they've become obsessed with mine.

I guess that the conventional definition of "social life" is when you socialize with people you can borrow money from.

Maybe in the Philipines, but that is NOT what is meant in North America and (Western) Europe. A typical "social life" is seen by many as going out and doing things with friends and/or other people. This can be in the form of dinner parties, drunken parties, going to bars and clubs, sports, festivals, just hanging out, watch a movie, watch sports with a beer (optional), etc etc.

Dude I was implying all those things, as I find it hard to believe that the trust required to lend a meal's worth or two can be built over non-face-to-face interactions. We're not a bunch of grubby shats.

*gets his anti-ignorant-Western-imperialist-pig-anger-thing going*

No you did NOT imply all those things, maybe you meant to but there is NOTHING in your post to imply it, only something about socialising with people you can get money from. Most people do not socialise purely to get material objects out of other people, or even as a main reason.

I got into a huge arguments with The Idiots (as I'll call them) again. Now they're saying that sitting like a lump staring at a TV screen watching their stupid shows (I think sitcoms) is more educational than Civilization. I laughed them off and told them to go smoke some more pot (I think they take it, although they deny it).

well i have been playing games since the Atari came out when i was in the third grade....and yes most people don't understand it....however who is it that they come too when they wanna know about a game..... ME....

i look at it this way

person who crochets--probably knows alot about different yarns and might keep track of the latest
or newest that comes out

person who plays the guitar--might have alot of sheet music laying around and can't wait to play
the latest song they heard on the radio

person who paints---might have alot of paint, paper, canvas laying around and can't wait to
get the latest paint brush

i ain't no different :)

No, I was implying it because you cannot get material favors from people you have not established trusting relationships with, something difficult to build outside of face-to-face relationships.

Yes it is difficult if not impossible (and most people do not want to) get material things out of online relationships, and much easier in the real world. However you are implying that is the ONLY reason to make relationships in the real world, at least for yourself. Which is wrong and certainly NOT the definition of a social life.

I haven't seen anybody look down on others for crocheting or painting, though. Unlike gaming. :dunno:

I was having a rather heated chat here:
Person #1: Lets see you solve a physics problem
Person #1: Then get back to me

Uhh Sure? QM, EM, SSP? Optics? Anything in particular?

See sig, I find it so much worse when people generalise without knowing what they are talking about :(

Yes and no. Yes, that I can figures things out others can't and no for the same reason. I come to different reasoning than someone else and they don't like it but I've had plenty of cases I don't want to share.

Person 1: The ability to sit on our ass for long hours
Person 1: Staring at a computer screen?
Person 1: Playing mediocre games that require no skill
Aimee Wilbury: Civilization requires skill
Person 1:
Person 2: the people who PLAY IT couldn't spell it right
Aimee Wilbury: Just because you play your stupid little casual games doesn't mean all of them are stupid
Person 1: Kind of like how they say "Sims" require skill
Aimee Wilbury: The Sims is dumb!
Person 1: Again, average intelligence playing a game that is worthy for ten year olds
Person 2: like that thing
Person 2: "I am a 12 year old boy but don't wrong me"
Person 2: "12 YEAR OLD BOY"
Person 2: "DO NOT WRONG HIM"
Aimee Wilbury: You've never played Civilization. What would you know?
Person 1: Nor do I want to
Person 1: It's too simple
Aimee Wilbury: Then how would you know it's simple?
Person 1: I've seen your screencaps Aimee
Person 1: It's incredibly simple
Person 2: well by all you've talked about it
Person 2: and by all you've said
Person 2: seriously?
Person 2: Seriously.
Person 1: A little war game or something?
Person 1: I mean, come on
Person 1: I take that back:
Person 1: A six year old could play it
Person 1: OH wow...
Person 1: Again, a war game
Person 1: So simple that a six year old could play it
Aimee Wilbury: It's not just war
Aimee Wilbury: you can also win by diplomacy or cultural or space race
Person 1: Oh wow...how fun *yawns*
Person 1: Give me a break: There is no THINKING POWER to this stupid game
Aimee Wilbury: And it's pretty hard on the higher levels too
Person 1: No wonder you're so stupid, Aimee
Person 1: I'm going to amuse you, Person 2
Person 1: with a screencap from the Civ game
Person 1: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/3/37/Civ01.png/240px-Civ01.png
Person 2: amuse meee
Aimee Wilbury: It's tricky to try and balance everything
Aimee Wilbury: Ummm.... thats Civ 1. The screenshot is 17 YEARS OLD
Person 1: OH yeh...Aimee...much like "Candy Land" is tricky
Aimee Wilbury: Civilization 4 has MUCH better graphics
Person 1: BLAH BLAH BLAHHHH

Seriously, I even provided reviews saying that Civ is complex, but they won't take them because "it's a gaming site!!!"

I now have a headache from dealing with those bigots. They insist I started it. they were the ones who brought up that I was a gamer.
