Do US and UK keyboards have different layouts?

Slightly. I have one of each: IIRC, the " and @ keys are swapped, as might be the / key with something. The $ and £ keys are obvious replacements...

Yeah they are nearly identical apart from what Ainwood said. But in the world there is more than just the usual QWERTY layout. There's also DVORAK I think.

AFAIK almost all english keyboards follow the basic QWERTY layout.

There are other layouts, DVORAK being one of them IIRC, that supposedly allow for faster typing (QWERTY was designed for typewriters, if you typed too fast the keys would jam so the layout was made to slow down typing) but they've never really caught on.
