Do volcanos stop erupting?

I always thought they would stop erupting at some point, though I've seen them go off even in the 1800's. It's always funny to see the AI lose a city to a volcano.

I wonder if it is possible to start with a settler right on top of the volcano, and have it active the first turn? Then you take one step away, and your settler gets roasted in hot lava, that would take the grand prize for the worst start ever. :)

I'm sure it's theoretically possible... :crazyeye:

@Twonky: That was their last city, huh? Major bummer!!!

Yeah... "Accept this sacrifice, oh great Volcano God, and bring us Peace for the next hundred years..." :crazyeye:

Which tiles get damaged by the volcano is a random event. There is no way to predict which tiles will get hit.

That's not my experience. Maybe it's just a fluke, but I've always seen volcanoes erupt over the same basic tiles. They might move a tile on either side, but it's always in the same basic direction. I once took a chance and built a city on the opposite side of the lava and sure enough my city was safe when the volcano blew again. It's not really something I'll do on a regular basis, but at the time it was a very strategic location.

I wonder if there really IS something like that built into the game... or if it's just the RGN playing up as usual... :D

Last night I began a new game and at 3400 bc I had a warrior out scouting and heading toward a volcano. It erupted with the fog of war as a background, so instead of seeing smoke and then the orange lava, it was actually shooting glowing sparks against the black background...very pretty to watch.

I tried to save it, but when I reloaded that save later to have another look, it just had the lava on the ground and there were no sparks. :(

That also happens sometimes when a volcano goes active... if you get the sparks, you know it's going to blow in one or two turns. ;) You hardly ever get this warning, though - mostly they just explode unannounced.
