Do you build monastaries?

If I get the AP religion, Monasteries are often one of my first buildings in hybrid/science cities.

However, I have a question. Are the AP, Sankore, Spiral Minaret bonuses lost at Scientific Method? If you don't lose the bonuses and have a couple of the buffs, you might want to get them up quickly before Scientific Method. I often delay Scientific Method if I can so I don't lose GL (if I have it) and monasteries.

It's amusing that researching Scientific Method can often hurt your science in the short run.

The buffs are lost at Sci Meth; making Sci Meth the worst tech in the game in many ways. Additionally the UoS/SM buffs are lost if you swap into FR/NSR while the AP ones stay, this is because the UoS/SM buffs are defined by your religion while the AP ones are defined by the religion of the AP itself.

Wreck: ehh that is an expensive denial to do of its own right. If I'm already getting early theo for some other reason I might go for it, but two turns of anarchy; getting theo before the AI finishes the AP, and sinking all those :hammers: so I can spend more :hammers: spreading a secondary religion just so the AP isn't a pain gets pricey.

Doable, but not high on my list of big denial priorities (I'd far rather deny the MoM, the UoS, or the Taj) unless it looks like the AP is going to be really harsh (e.g. the take one city and lose the game scenario; also the "fight WWI alone in 1050" scenario); I'm normally okay with the AP getting the :hammers:. If I can get someone like Monty to be my attack dog I WANT them get the :hammers:.

An easy way to calculate it is 5% bonuses vs hammers/30.
So libraries are 5:3
monasteries 2:2
obs/markets/grocers are 5:5
and universities are 5 : 7+

without oxford, monasteries/markets/grocers easily have more value at 50% research than a university. banks and philosophical universities are almost library efficient. Note a lot of people consider markets too expensive to build mid game except in the capital.

Simple question in the same vein: I can no longer build missionaries. It says I have reach my limit - max 3 I believe. Does this mean I can only build 3 missionaries from the same religion? Do I have to build more Monasteries?

3 missionaries at a time for any one religion. As soon as one of your current three has done its thing, you can build another one.

I generally use them as a border city culture generator between writing and drama/education. After that they just lose their short-term appeal, unless you have some religious scheme going on and are going to delay Sci Meth.

I could be wrong on this, but I believe that getting certain techs like Sci Meth and Astronomy add some kind of global multiplier to your tech rate.

It seems like obsolescence doesn't just mean that you lose a benefit in this game, but rather the benefit is given from something else. For ex: Economics obsoletes castles, so you lose the +1 trade route from the castles, but I believe you get a global +1 trade route from the discovery (or maybe only if you flip into free market).

Or am I just talking out the side of my neck?

For me, religion is a stagnant gas that creeps into my cities and makes monk sounds. So no I dont. Glad religion is gone for Civ 5.

Some games religion plays a large part of the game and I find myself chasing the monastery helping wonders then ignoring SM for as long as sanely possible. I tend to do very well those games mostly due to the fact that if I'm able to pick up any of the big 3 religious wonders I'm obviously in a very good position mid-game.

The rest of the games religion plays very little part and I often find myself avoiding any religion or just picking the most useful diplomatic one. So like all things Civ my answer is "depends on the map." ;)

I love playing Civ4 but I don't have time sometimes play at it long stretches at a time, so, although I am getting better, I don't play enough to really master the game (I'm only a Prince player). I have trouble sometimes bringing all the elements of the game together.

Up until my current Mehmed game, fractal map, Normal speed, I never got or appreciated the importance of religion nor the Apostolic Palace. The only time I considered religion was to get along with the Civs (which is a big part of the game) and win a U.N. game. I think the fact I played on a lower level made it so that religion isn't as important.

But I tell you, the extra hammers gain under the religion of the Apostolic Palace can be a nice boost. I never took advantage of these before.

That being said, I'm a little disappointed Civ5 scrapped the religion aspect simply because Religion has played a huge role in history.

Not exactly. Your probably going to go into free religion, which gets back 10% for religion, and since you need missionaries to spread religion, which monastaries give you the option, they only kinda go obsolete.

This is incorrect. Free Religion gives you +10% science, period, regardless of number of religions or indeed any religions in a city; it then also gives you +1 happy for each religion in the city.

I just finished the NC Augustus on Monarch marathon.
Why do I post that here ?
Explanation follows:
I captured 2 shrinecities, HC buddhist and Zaras Christian, I used all the priests in HC's former capitol to produce me a profet, to set up the Hindu Shrine in Pacals former Residens. So far so good :D
Then I got sidestepped, by a lot of warring, building etc. and since i was in OR, i just send out a missionary when a whole in the prod occured.
I used a somewhat leftover GS(I had 3 regular GPfarms:mischief:) to bulb most of Scientific methods, as i wanted to be ahead to get the free Scientist from Physics etc, so, SM was researched in 2 turns:cool:
Then I discovered I didnt build ONE single Monastary of ANY religion
I was running free religion and had just taken the punishment of a 6 turns anarchy
So, lesson learned, build at least ONE of each, if you have the shrines, else you are royally screwed later
Just my 2 pennies over and out :goodjob:

wait what? *Checks it*

AHH CRAP

Ok, I just goofed up big time

MadmanAtW
if you have the Shrine to a religion, you get 1 gold pr. city, the Shrinereligion is spread too, including your own!
I missed out on a lot of gold because I couldnt send missionaires anymore after i researched SM

That's true, and I almost added that, but I decided not to bother adding all the other things missionaries could be useful for and just stick to the question of science. :)

I build monasteries for a couple different reasons: culture, spreading religion(s), AP clout, AP/UniSank/DivineRightWonder bonuses. Although I can't remember the last time I build the DR wonder.
