Do you guys cheat to the computer?

It is not fun to cheat. If I cheat, then why should I play it at all?

If I have played a game particulary well or particularly poorly I will reload the AutoSave_Initial_BC-4000_SavedGame and replay the thing differently (Expand in other ways, prioritize other Techs, warmonger/not warmonger) just to see if it was my gameplay or my luck that caused the first outcome.

Which leads me to a question: is it possible to open that initial savegame in World Builder and change your leader? I'd like to experiment with one start and see how the game plays out using different leaders. If so, could someone point me to a tutorial? I opened World Builder exactly once and found it very unintuitive compared to the CivIII Map Editor.

Never mind: I just did some digging and found that you can change leaders in the WB Save file using any text editor. All I have to do is open the initial AutoSave in WB and save it out with a unique name then open that WB save in my text editor and change the name under the LeaderType for Team0.

My level of cheating only involves a restart after a bad break in the game. Now if I get more than one or two of these "bad breaks" I'll just consider it a loss and quit. If I'm dumb enough to let my military defenses slip just because I'm too busy building wonders for the rare cultural victory, I deserve to lose. :(

I save and reload regularly, although I do not use worldbuilder to cheat. I feel justified in cheating regularly this way as I tell myself it is part of the learning process. I am not yet expert, trying to master Prince currently (and getting there).

I have auto save set to save every single turn of every game. This is interesting because you can go back and play "alternate timelines" to see how the game might of ended up had you done something different. It helps you appreciate the magnitude of certain gains and losses.

Nice rationalization, huh?

Hi, my name is Newbert and I'm a recovering save-reload addict. I used to loath the thought of losing a single unit. A hard habit to break.

The "preserve random" seed option helped me for a while with my addiction - what sense reloading if the result wouldn't change, until I found this could be circumvented by waiting a turn or attacking from a different square. That made me slip back into my old evil ways for a while. :(

These day, however, I'm doing a lot better. I think this is because my load times are so long that my addiction to playing CIV overpowers my addiction to unit preservation. Thank goodness for the long load times of late game - I may finally be able to control my addiction. :goodjob:

Save/reload...

much, much less than before, since reload just takes way too long, and only over large stretches to see if a different strategy will give a different result (Oracle rush vs Pyramid rush vs Currency/Optics/Liberalism/Riflemen beeline). I will only finish one map at a time to victory or defeat, though, since I don't want to have the victory screen filled with 15 victories and 30 defeats from a single map. The game is more fun once I have gotten over the tendency to reload for every bad roll.

I am playing Emperor now so it would probably be more like 30 games quit for each victory until I get a handle on the pace of the AI. I have no finished games on this level yet, though, but I'm on my third attempt.
