Do you know how to communicate with HTTPS (SSL)?

Do you know how to communicate with HTTPS? I need to write an application that know how to post and get with HTTPS. What's the best component for this kind of work?

I don't know much about it, but when I needed to understand how to use GET to send info to a server, I checked RFC-Editor to see if I could find a good description of the appropriate protocol. I thought it was very cryptic at first, but understood it better after a while. Maybe you can get something out of it.
