Unlikely, It's not the first time that Firaxis cross-promotes it's own products (you could say X-COM squad is a similar thing, and Scientific Victory displays a link to the store page for Beyond Earth).

I find it interesting that there are enough concurrent players on CIV5 to justify development time + testing + rollout of this promo message

True. I was more joking when I said it. Perhaps they have some good ideas for the next iteration. We'll see in the coming years.

I really don't think I do. A lot of them are from a couple of humble bundles that went for like 12 bucks, a fair number is free and the rest are bought on sale at something like 75% off. Enrico's doesn't even show his full list and I don't think he has that many games either.

I successfully disabled the new launcher by following these steps:

For people who the new launcher doesn't work for, or who just don't want to have to load adverts every time they launch their game, you can revert the the old CIV 5 launcher using the following steps:

• Open up Steam and navigate to your LIBRARY.
  
  
• Right click on the game in your library and choose "Properties."
  
  
• Selected the "BETAS" tab.
  
  
• In the text box to "Enter beta access for to unlock private beta:" enter the password "ineedlegacyaccess".
  
  
• Click on the "CHECK CODE" button.
  
  
• You should see a confirmation message that access has been granted.
  
  
• If not already selected in the drop down, select "legacy" and click close.
  
  
• Steam may require you to download and update for the game. Wait for this to happen or force it using "LIBRARY -> DOWNLOADS".
  
  
• Once the game has been updated, click "PLAY" as usual and you will be running the legacy branch.
