When some elite unit win the battle and I got Great Military Leader, than, yes, I named the unit. Usually ad something next to..like...Tank Tiger, or Modern Armor Panther, Cavaliry Victorius etc...Otherwise I'm not bother to do rename of unit.
I name all my ships HMS Somethingortheother, name my planes [City] Airforce, and name my tanks [City] Panzer/Tank Division.
Oh, and infantry units usualy end up with names ranging from "Colonial Regiment" to "National Guard".
Obsessed? Moi!? Noooooooo
I rename only elite units that have won Leaders. This is so I easily know which units I will put in the resulting armies. Usually I just name them '1st army' or something like that.
I name all of my naval units from the beginning. (it's bad luck to have a ship without a name)
I also name armies, usually as divisions (1 Cavalry Div, 4 Armor Div, etc.) I also like to name obsolete elite units and keep them in the Capital as a national honor guard.
I rename all my elite units producing MGL, with the names of the protagonists in Tintin. (you know, the famous comoc book hero with his dog and the captain).
So the first one is Tintin, then it goes to Milou, Haddock, Tournesol (think it's Calculus in english), and so on...
For now I always was able to come up with a name, but I guess one day I'll have too many MGL...
Oh and I rename all of my towns, giving them names belonging to a theme, my favorite being potato-related names (potato dish are accepted). The capitol is "Vico", because it's a brand name whose french motto is "The king of Potato", and then it goes to Mashed Potatoes, French fries, Lay's, Gratin Dauphinois and so on.
I mostly just rename MGL producing units and units that deserve it. I also often rename the last i produce of a unit so I can keep that. In this case a samurai could for instance be The Last Samurai
One time as the celts I couldn't resist and began calling the gallic swordsman Asterix, Obelix etc.
