I almost always make my way to the sea before settling. If it takes more than five turns then I don't, but 9 times out of 10 I'll go for that extra naval advantage.

I said:

But the moving 1 tile thing is pretty damn rare, honestly. It's not often I find a better spot one tile away. What happens more often is I'll think there's a better spot one tile away, but after exploring a bit more of my surrounding, my original spot was better after all. So 99.95% of the time I don't even risk a single move.

My approach is somewhat gamey, i start be exploring with both settler and warrior.
Looking for a nice starting location and goody huts. When i found the "perfect" spot i reload autosave 4000 bc., and move my settler directly to the spot(plus i know where them goody hut/ruins are).

This approach also save you from the annoying scenario where your initial spawn point looks like the garden of Eden, but when you explor a few tiles away you find nothing but a barren arctic wasteland or desert.

What in this approach is different than reloading a map until you have a spot you like?
It's your game, you can do as much as you want, but in my opinion this is cheating. You call it "gamey". I like that :D

One or rarely two turns delay is acceptable if I can see that the destination is clearly better. Just walking around and exploring for a possibly better spot with my settler is definitely a no-no.

If I'm not happy with my city location after turn 1, I restart.

Bring back the "Regenerate Map" option!! Starting from scratch due to a sucky map is a pain.

Yes! Please let us regenerate map :goodjob:

I would never ever map reroll. How would you like it if the AI map rerolled you? It just seems against the spirit of the game.

I have limited time to play games, and if it doesn't look like fun for whatever reason, I'm going to restart and I don't see anything wrong with that.

I spawn at turn 0 99% of the time. I feel like settle at turn 1 is 1 turn way too late, and falls under the category of automatic game over, unable to catch up to the other AIs. It's a cardinal rule, and direct perk, and can not be changed without severe disruption to my strategy.

I'd be equally upset if the AI just saved me where I was and went down the pub with it's mates!

I wouldn't mind if Monty rage quit every so often though.

I have found that disabling start bias seems to have helped. I definitely reroll maps a ton less. I think start bias just screws you sometimes. You're maybe playing a civ with no start bias, and other civs with a bias get the best spots.

You would think this wouldn't be the case, since start bias doesn't mean a bias toward the best spot. Sometimes it just works out this way consistently on certain map types. "Lakes" is definitely one of these maps.

I still say there's no argument against a map regen feature. If you don't want to use it, then don't. It can take up to 1-2 minutes just to reset all the settings for a new game.

Exactly. The only times I have to sit down and spend on this game are weekends. Generally I get in one, sometime two games a week that I have time to actually play start to finish. If I know from the start I'm screwed and the game is going to be stacked against me from the start, screw that. I reroll and don't have a problem with that.

I always move my warrior before I settle to see he reveals the "perfect" spot. I have very rarely moved my settler a couple of turns - but 99% of the time, I settle either on the spot I spawned or withing one mvt pt so that I can build the city on T0.

Regarding restarts. If your playing SP, then you should play anyway you want to play and enjoy the game. Just remember that it doesn't always work that way in MP.

As a note, I usually have time to play only on the weekends. And when I do play MP, its with a group of friends I've known for years - more for the social fun than the win at all cost aspect. So whether anyone get a bad start with them, if you get in "trouble", with these guys, they will let up on you (or sent you gold or whatever). So killer games aren't in my history except as SP.

you play 2 games a week? Wow. I only play two games a month maybe. Though if I'd get off this website I could probably finish more games.

I'll *almost* always settle in or near my start. Only a few times did I get stuck so far in the tundra I had to travel.

I'll absolutely never regen a map though. Some of my most fun games have been in the crappiest starting spots for the extra challenge.

Yes.

Time is not a luxury, and mostly I spawn along river tiles...

I have found that disabling start bias seems to have helped.

I found disabling start bias (which I did for at least 50 games) made my starts worse.

So long as it's labelled "Quit and Regen" I have no objection. It's a PITA that it doesn't remember your start settings. Actually it somehow does remember my settings from like the 3rd game I played. It always starts me as Wu playing Fractal at King level and Epic speed, all of which I now dislike. Despite being a reasonably proficient player I have no idea how to change the default.

Starting position certainly has higher than average odds of being somewhere I settle. I wouldn't say all the time, but if my starting warrior doesn't spot anything better after a moving first, I'm not going to bother wasting time to search.

If my starting location is very bad, with a lot of Tundra or no rivers spotted within two to three turns of exploration I will just restart.

Otherwise I build the city where the game has dropped my settler. I only rarely have to restart; the game seems to usually put me near a river with a fair amount of grassland.

I'd probably be like "What, you give yourself a huge happiness handicap and you're re-rolling me? RAGE QUIT!"

It'd be funny though, to see the message in the corner "Montezuma has decided to re-roll" *cue loading screen*
