Do you upgrade spearmen or use them for cannon fodder?

Maybe I should take a poll on this

what is it 140 gold or something like that to upgrade a spearman to an infantry? I'm thinking it's better to do an pull an Iran and use them as cannon fodder, (I know, I know, war is hell huh?) But it's just a friggin' game right?

:suicide:

I always upgrade in increments, and don't skip Pikemen, Musketmen, or Riflemen, so it isn't 140 gold all at once. If your Spearmen have done well until you have Infantry, why bother upgrading at that point? They probably already aren't getting attacked. Although, I think the new patch takes into account the relative strength of units when determining overall military strength, so 28 Spearmen no longer have the same value as 28 Mechanical Infantry (and workers/scouts/settlers no longer count towards military strength).

I tend to upgrade in increments and wholesale - if I'm on a tight budget I leve those in the empire core un-upgraded.

I upgrade as soon as I can (that is, as soon as I have the barracks, advances, and resources.) I usually don't have time to make an entirely new force of defensive units.

I always upgrade my spearmen every step of the way. To Pikes, then muskets etc. It's not to expensive if you get Leo's.

Spearman have the same military police effects, movement capabilities, and culture flipping suppression power as and infantryman (and pikemen/musketmen/riflemen as well)

I upgrade some spearmen to pikemen and use them on the borders. Pikes defend at a 4 or higher when fortified. Pikes in cities (pop 6+) on hills will defend at better than 6.

Upgrading pikemen to musketmen is not cost effective because of the low increase in defensive value. Two pikemen (@30 shields each) make a better defender than one musketman (@60shields) in most cases when cavalry is not the norm.

I upgrade very few pikemen to Riflemen or infantry in most cases, because the can serve the primary garrison function without being upgraded until they might be needed to defend against something.

This is how I have always done it before, but with the military strength formula change in the recent patch, I've been upgrading more readily (and maybe wastefully, I don't know yet). I figure if I have more of an upperhand in military strength, I'll be able to better determine exactly when I can enter and exit wars. Maybe the more rigorous players will determine the actual new military strength formula at some point, or the Firaxis folks will clue us in after a while - for those who didn't know, before there was no formula, it was just a simple headcount.

That should of course be Mechanized. :p

My units are never used for cannon fodder. :)

I usually upgrade all the vet spears progressively, beginning in those areas where war is likelier. As for the reg ones, depends on whether I have time to build replacements, enemy placements, money etc. Otherwise, will disband them.

The only units I may use as cannon fodder are swordsmen and cavalry since they don't upgrade. Usually, I disband them and collect the shields.

I always upgrade spearmen. Frequenty riflemen are skipped since I beeline right for replaceable parts. Unless I play as a scientific civ, I get Nationalism from a trade.

I wish you could "upgrade all" fromt the military advisor screen. Instead of going town to town, I wish I could just upgrade all my spearmen in one fell swoop from the advisor screen.

dunk: slect an ungradeable unit and hit Shift +U. you will get the option to upgrade all upgradeable units of the type. its a great time saver.

personally, unless pressed militarily i build new units to replace obsolete units until the industrial age. the exception to this is if im playing with the Great Library. If I have it i will prebuild 10-20 horsemen and mass upgrade them when i get chivalry.

i never udgrade regulare units.

The units in my core cities rarely get upgraded. In the modern era my capitol is usually defended by a spearman and a musketman, maybe a few more units if my core was threatened at one point. I almost always have a bunch of obsolete units lying around partially because I just forget about them. But when my modern armors are taking cities late in the game those spears, swords and knights make for good placeholders in (formerly) enemy cities.:king:

I usually upgrade to the best available defender ASAP in border cities, while Spearmen may remain in core cities. I usually eventually have three defenders in all bigger cities (increases my nominal military strength and gives some protection against sudden invasions), wherefore I often end up with weird garrisons - a city defended by a Warrior, a Musketeer and a Mech Infantry isn't unheard of.

Depending on gold supply, I occaisonally upgrade my guys. Not too often though. A spearman can be individually effective up to cavalry (if you got them on a mountain with fortress bonuses).

I've used a force of fifteen spearmen as cannon fodder once, they delayed six German panzers from taking a valley into one of my key cities. (Why did i have fifteen spearmen in the industrial age? Spendin all my cash on science.. so that my spearmen would feel even more unloved that they aren't getting the gadgets)

Spearmen also make very good pillagers, I like to send them in a galleon and drop them on a saltpeter resource in the middle ages (timing being critical, they should have just got gunpowder). A couple of spears can hold off enemy knights on that resource (after they pillage) for a few turns, specially if on a hill. Thats enough time for me to plow through their lack of musketmen with a concentrated group of knights.

And like most people, in the deep core of my empire where an invasion will never reach, I have spearmen drilling among my factories and skyscrapers. Gold sometimes can be better spent on rushing an improvement or science then upgrading a useless deep reserve force.

As for swordies, they are non upgradable (unless you fiddle in the editor), but I can't bring myself to disband a perfectly good fighting unit. They are useful as cavalry killers, without risking more quality offensive/defensive units (after a defense of a city the fast units often need to be chased down). Also an elite swordsmen against just about anything with only one hit point, there is a fairly decent chance the sword will get through. So if I still have some I keep them with my offensive force, because the sheer numbers I throw at the enemy every once in a while results in needing that one last rifleman hit point to be taken off to grab the city.

By the modern era though, when some units can attack twice, planes can fly over em, nukes start flying, by then I pretty much don't keep my swords or spears around for any tactical purposes.

I would say i upgrade all my veteran pickman, because most of my spearman are regular so i disband them, but when i reach feudalism, i produce veteran units and upgrade them through the age.

I'm not really sure wether it's cost effective to upgrade spearman but unless you have to I would not use them for cannon fodder. Instead of using them as future casulties, use them to help rush improvements (by disbanding unit) to newly captured cities, as little as 10 shields used in this matter can save you half the cost in rushinng improvements. Typically I will upgrade all defensive units to MI's but I use old offensive units (swordsman, Chariot,Archer, Calvalry (after I get MA's) in this matter & it saves your currency reserves.:D

I eventually upgrade almost all units. I immediatly upgrade offense units always. I don't usually disband unupgradable units since they can be used for other things. Drafted units can be used to defend cities if you don't want to upgrade.

Now is that every unit of that type or just every unit of that type on that particular tile?
