DocT4-How to Rise as a Ruler (RaR Training SG)

Hmm... seems I too must play my 50 sometime this week. Since it isn't that hard to start off the first 50 and get them over quickly... I might have them posted Tuesday-ish, if I'm lucky and if you need them :D.

Joker.ru, what's the status?

And, here's my 50-turn-set:

Ok, DocT, I read over your log and have a couple of questions?

1. Why Domestication over Cultivaition? I would think that the possible bonus food/luxs would be more important to locate.
2. Why did you choose to explore north? I went east with my first scout (meeting Spain) and south with my second. Since we were about the equator, I wouldn't have expected to find another tribe up there on a archepelago map.
3. I noticed you were building wisemen? Is that to increase research?
4. I chose to build shrines (for expansion & happiness) and worker housing (for production increase), was I too early for those items.
5. I noticed you built a couple of warriors, was that for defense or MP duty? I thought about building that cheap military unit, but with spices hooked up, happiness didn't seem to be an issue.
6. I built a worker as my 2nd build (after a scout) in city # 2. Was that too early? Should I have let the city grow to size 3-4 before building the worker?

Horses are more important, and a food bonus as well. And, you don't want to found a city on a Horse Hill, whereas about everything from Cultivation is on Grassland.

2. Why did you choose to explore north? I went east with my first scout (meeting Spain) and south with my second. Since we were about the equator, I wouldn't have expected to find another tribe up there on a archepelago map.
Continents. And pure coincidence
3. I noticed you were building wisemen? Is that to increase research?
What else? ;) 2 Wiseman=1st tier Techs in half of the time. Plus, you need to build a useful city improvement while the Scouts pop huts anyway.
4. I chose to build shrines (for expansion & happiness) and worker housing (for production increase), was I too early for those items.
Shrines only where you need the expansion, WH are fine (built 2 of them as well)
5. I noticed you built a couple of warriors, was that for defense or MP duty? I thought about building that cheap military unit, but with spices hooked up, happiness didn't seem to be an issue.
Defence. Not so much against the AI Civs (though open cities are not good), but the Barbs. And, we have Iron, so Vet Warriors are an investment for the future.
6. I built a worker as my 2nd build (after a scout) in city # 2. Was that too early? Should I have let the city grow to size 3-4 before building the worker?
What do you need 2 Workers for? I hardly build my second Worker before I have 5-6 cities;growth is so slow, better get another Hardy out of core cities. Workers are for corrupt towns.

I won't have a turn log until Sunday-ish, so unless you want a pre-game Q and A, you can start this bad boy up anytime.

Had a look the the submitted games & reports, here’s the summary:

Pfeffersack:

Pfeffersack.jpg

City count: 2
City Improvements: Lhasa (Granary)
Units: 1 Worker, 3 Scouts
Contacts: Rome, Spain
Techs: All 1st tiers, Sailing, Scrape Mining, Weaving, Fermentation, Writing, Caste System
Extra: Both cities in awful locations (sorry!). Capital is 1 off the River, and has exactly one Mountain. Sikkhim is prolly not defendable if Spain attacks. No cities in the resource-rich starting area.

Gyathaar:

Gyathaar.jpg

City count: 5
City Improvements: Lhasa (Wiseman), Sikkhim (Granary)
Units: Zero
Contacts: Rome
Techs: All 1st tiers, Scrape Mining, Weaving, Urbanization, Caste System
Extra: Good catch on the great city spot in the Sikhim area. Chamdo is definitely too close to the capital (distance 3 makes less sense in RaR anyway, with road movement=2)

Tinkez:

tinkez2.jpg

City count: 3
City Improvements: Lhasa (Granary, Wiseman), Sikkhim (Granary, Wiseman, Shrine, The Oracle)
Units: 2 Workers, 1 vet TG, 2 Scouts
Contacts: Rome, Spain
Techs: All 1st tiers, Sailing, Scrape Mining, Weaving, Urbanization, Writing, Caste System, Dynasticism, Mysticism
Extra: Already in Monarchy! S already scouted.

Denyd:

denyd.jpg

City count: 3
City Improvements: Sikkhim (Shrine)
Units: 2 Workers, 3 Scouts
Contacts: Spain
Techs: All 1st tiers except the uber-crucial Domestication, Sailing, Writing, Caste System
Extra: S already scouted

Doc Tsiolkovski:

Doc.JPG

City count: 4
City Improvements: Lhasa (Wiseman, Worker Housing, Stonehenge->Granary), Sikkhim (Wiseman, Worker Housing, free Granary), Gartokh (Shrine, free Granary)
Units: 1 Worker, 1 Clan, 1 Scout, 3 Warriors (2 Vet, 1 Reg)
Contacts: Rome, Spain
Techs: All 1st, Sailing, Scrape Mining, Weaving, Writing, Urbanization, Mathematics, Mysticism, Slavery
Extra: none

Strategy summary:
Best moves:
Settle on spot. 1 or 2 Scouts. Wiseman, then Clan. Pop Huts like mad while you have no military. Research techs not that likely to be researched by the AI, and hope for a SGL.

Which game should be continued:

My vote goes to Tinkez’, with Gyathaar’s coming second. (Remember my game is not eligible)

However, this game is halted for now!

Seriously, running a Training Game is quite a lot of work. I’m absolutely willing to invest the time, but…
1) Pfeffersack and cizzlewalk don’t need to learn that much about RaR
2) Tinkez and Gyathaar don’t need a Monarch level game that much.
3) That leaves only Denyd atm, who should benefit a lot.

What I consider a bit disappointing is:
We had 3 more sign-ups. Every single Newbie dropped out without further notification, or didn’t even check in. If the opening looked too difficult for you, why didn’t you asked for advice here?

For that reason, I won’t continue with this game before at least two more trainees show up.
I am convinced this will be an interesting, informative and fun game for everyone, so by no means I plan to cancel it – just wait for more participants.

If you want to join, absolutely nothing is required. Never played Monarch before? Doesn’t matter. Never played RaR or Dyp? Doesn’t matter.
Just give it a try!

Hey Doc, Do you mind if i try? Im new to RaR and im in cizzlewalks SG but it hasnt started yet, so i could use the experience.

Im a monarch player in c3c normally but trying to move to Emperor but im liking the RaR experience so for.

I will download the save and start right away. (if you will have me)

I agree with you on the too much spoiler info, so i dont mind it not being counted but i will try to play the game as "innocently" as possible and make as many as my own decisions as i can.

I havent read any of the logs yet but i have a good idea of peoples first moves etc and i guess my game will be affected bye them to some extent.

Just one question. How detailed should my log be? Do you want a turn by turn account or just major points in the game?

Thanks for your vote DocT :D Makes me feel I did well :goodjob:

If it is possible I'll give my vote to my own game, too

I can just watch the game progress without any bad feelings, I'm already part of DocT5, which will benefit me much more.

I will keep an eye on the thread and maybe even continue my own save on my own, just see how it goes. I might also comment something on this thread once the game starts moving again.

COME ON PEOPLE, Join this game! Such a nice start is prepared ( ;) ) that you actually want to be teached by DocT and get some gentle whipping after your mistakes :whipped:

Hi, been playing Civ3 for about a year now, lurked on these forums for a similar time as well, and I would have liked to have joined a SG but never had a predictable internet connection before now. I really like the look of RaR but have only dl in the last week or so, anyway a training a SG sounds perfect!

With regards to skill level I never really did better than monarch with the epic game of C3C before getting bored of it (not enough choices - something RaR makes up for just a little bit :) ) and my emperor wins probably don't count for much (as they are WH2 and MoM ;) ).

Anyway I'd like to sign up and I'll play the first 50 - unfortuately I read the turnlogs before getting to the end of this thread (Damn you memory!)

Tinkez, maybe my original post was misleading:
By no means I want anyone to step aside and retire. The opposite is true, I prefer a team with a mixed level of playing skills by a wide margin.
It just looked that we were down to all Generals and Officers, with no Privates left ;)
(don't have a Calculus avatar for no reason, I'm a avid Tintin fan... "We already have 3487 Colonels, but only 47 Privates." Tintin, The Broken Ear)

You stay. Period.

Edit (crossposting):
disenfrancised, welcome. Same applies to you than to Knappagh1 (see my post above).
Dam, we're a team with incredibly hard-to-spell handles now

Obviously, I couldn't check the save already, but from the log:

Masonry f/WF, SM for 106g + worker

Not allowed (unless you can prove Isabella had another one). "Seed Corn" exploit, no purchase of the last/only Worker from an AI Civ before 2000BC.

Doesn't matter here, of course.

I can change the name if you want

 Unless you manage to get hold of something like 'Bob', it won't change much with Gyathaar, Knappagh1, Pfeffersack and me still around.

But you could do me the favor and explain what your handle means - my dicts fail here. In return, I could enlighten you about 'Tsiolkovski' and 'Pfeffersack' (though I have no idea why he choosed it).

well to start with, its misspelt :crazyeye:
sheesh thats the first time I've noticed that - dyslexia is fun (for other people :) ).

If it were what I intended it to be - "Disenfranchised" it would mean an individual or corporation which has had certian rights or powers, granted by someone else, revoked. I got it from a novel where "the disenfranchised" were outcasts from a corporate facist regime.

Its always the "h" which gets me, well come the revolution those h's will be put in their place.

You'd think someone with a handle like Doc Tsiolkovski would be one of the last complain about long handles.

Mine is a simple concatenation of first name last initial (Deny DeRosier = DenyD)

For those who don't know, "Pfeffersack" is a historic nickname for the merchants of the Hanseatic League. One of my first computer games was "Patrizier", a historic trade simulation in this context and the second part of this game was the reason for my first forum account ever...and since those days I have used it as my forum nickname, regardless if the forum is about a soccer manager or Civilization ;)
