I know quite a few people have commented on AI's attacking you out of the blue even though they are pleased with you (it's happened to me before). I'm just curious to know if it's ever happened to anyone with a friendly AI. (And, by inference, whether being friendly is a guarantee you won't be attacked).

It's certainly never happened to me before, but you never know....

From the looks of the game numbers all civs are at 100% when 'friendly' toward you. There are other modifiers besides this but unprovoked attacks by friendly civs should be rare to non-existent.

I played a game where I was with Louis on a continent, and played a cultural/builder game as Asoka. Our relations went to friendly very quickly after I met him (as I used religion, gifts and mutual warfare to get us there), and despite him having a military that vastly outclassed mine - he was the strongest faction in the game - he didn't declare war on me or even make any demands. I eventually got him into a Permanent Alliance and had the game wrapped up. I used him as an attack force against my enemies - when I got him to go after England, he crushed them in less than ten turns. He could've done the same to me at any time but chose not to.

Louis, of course, isn't one of the warmongers, yet he's always a little belligerent; so it's an example of how you can comfortably rest in the jaws of the lion if you've tamed him first.

same for mocty and napo.

for brainless warries lover, relations doesn't matter if you have weaker military than theirs.

Sometime, if you have BOTH stronger army than their AND good relations with them, perhaps they would not declare.
But the best way to avoid being atacked by those morons is either to obliterate them or occupy them.
I.E. organize a war between mocty and alex and you will be fine. Do not forget to build heavy military before in order to backstab the would be winner of the struggle to nothing

I've recently been attacked by a +13 country (Japanese). We were largely pretty even, the main difference was he had a much bigger power than me and, therefore, I assume, used this as a gauge he could take me. He didn't in the end, but it caused me a major headache. I would imagine the +2 to make it up to friendly (if I recall correctly it is +15 for friendly attitude?) would not make a whole lot of difference in such circumstances. He saw a weaker military and went for it, regardless.

Yes, the opportunistic enemies will look for military weakness, no matter how friendly they are with you, and exploit as needed.

I was playing a Monarch game where I was Mansa's sole border and had friendly relations with him. My military was practically non-existent and he invaded. The funniest thing is that he remained "pleased" with me during the entire war.

This thread and this spreadsheet by fengertao may help.

Actually, if you look at CIV4LeaderHeadInfos.xml, you'll see that every AI leader (except for the Barbarians) has a NoWarAttitudeProb of 100 for ATTITUDE_FRIENDLY. Unless I'm interpreting this wrong, this means that an AI will never declare war on you if their attitude is Friendly. Of course, for many of the leaders (including all of the aggressive ones), NoWarAttitudeProb is less than 100 for ATTITUDE_PLEASED, so the AI will declare war even if Pleased.

I would also be pleased if I could take an almost undefended country
