The title says it. Does anyone change the name of cities, units, civilizations or anything else? I recently started to do this because some of the names are hard to pronounce and distinguisha nd remember where they are on the map. Names I am familiar with are easier to identify and locate because I named it.

I keep meaning to change Liverpool to Everton when playing the English but never get around to it, and I'd be really mad if Everton got captured.

Yarly, I rename most of my cities. I'm not attached or invested enough into my little digimurderers to give them names.

I never go with the default names for cities, but rarely bother to name my units at all.

On Civ II and Civ III I would always rename my cities. Capital would always be my last name + ville. Every subsequent city would be other cities/towns I lived in, places Ive visited, friends' last names, etc...

Civ IV I find myself keeping the default name. It helps keep me in the spirit of the actual Civ.

I have never named my units, but I always mean to.

When i first started to play I used to add letters to the end of the cities to keep track of what great person would be coming out, So I would make Washington into Washington S.

I did that so I knew where to build the next wonder, that was back when I tried making all the wonders and knew how to better control what great person I get.

I never name units, i just cant be bother I guess, but the polycast podcast made me think of maybe next time when one of my units survives a sure death battle to give them names,I always great when one units does something incredible and I congratulate them on it :P, so might as well give them a name.Don't know if i will actually do remember to do it though.

I rename maybe my first couple units, and maybe a city or two, but not extensively.

Leoking of the empire of Xorg or Tronica. So far I have 2 made up empires with there full list of city. Every empire has about 20-25 cities names. Not bad at all.

I've got a soft spot for warhammer names. So I will play using the names of Chaos or Elven (or whatever) names from that lore.

Too bad I can't find a decent mod for warhammer.

Renaming of cities, yes, but only the important ones;

Capital City for my Capital.
Moai Statues for ...yes..
Ironworks for Ironworks.
Etc. Nothing overly dramatic, just so I know where what is where.

On Units, very rarely. Only if I'm in the mood, or something Significant occurs to that unit. What's the point, they fight die and garrison cities.

I never do that anymore in Civ4 since it will mess up the default names of cities founded after the renaming. If I'd rename New York to Foobarville, the suggested name for a new city will never become Boston until I make another city New York. That's not a big problem for the first couple of cities for most civs, as I'd probably found a Boston and Los Angeles anyway when playing as the US. But I'd never remember when to put in, like, Albuquerque or Milwaukee.

Used to do it a lot in Civ3 though, if only to tag a city with its specialization.

I rename cities a turn after they are created. That way the default name is removed from the naming queue since it has already been used. However, I mostly only rename ones where the name is difficult for me to identify easily, for instance about half the Aztec city names look the same to me, so I change them. Mostly, I modify the name to keep its flavor but make it stand out in my mind. Occasionally, I will run a made up empire name and change every city name as soon as it is created, since I won't be using any of the default ones.

As for units, I only name the ones where I am sending the same basic type down different promotion paths. Then I name all the ones from each path the same. That makes it easy to choose exactly the type unit I want for any battle without having to look over its promotions. For example, my most common use of this is with tanks and advanced armor. I promote some of them with City Raider promotions first and rename them as "Raider", while a second group, intended for stack defense and attacks on enemy units in the field, gets the basic general purpose promotions and renamed as "Battle".

I invariably rename my cities.

I didn't know that you could rename units at all. How is this done?

I sometimes rename captured enemy cities to fit in with the "flavor" or language of my own empire, but still bearing resemblance to their original names. For instance, when I play Korea, Japan or China I find it fun to mentally transcribe the captured city's name into my empire's language and then romanizing it back to alphabetic. For instance, Paris would become Ba Li, P'ari or Parisu.

As for units, I love renaming highly (or somewhat) promoted ones :)

Woodsman 2 or 3: "Ranger"
Guerrilla 2 or 3: "Mountaineer"
City Raider 3+Barrage 1: "Citysmasher" - I may end up doing this for a lot of cannons!

Also Medic when appropriate. One really nifty one was a Gunship with major Medic upgrades. It was named "Medevac" haha!

Edit: Ah. Pre-Marine era I might call my Rifleman a "Marine" if it has that same promotion. Or name a modern advanced infantry unit "Commando" or "Delta", if it's got the Commando promotion (use enemy roads).
Lastly. Cavalry units with both Flanking 2 and Mobility will be known as "Fast Cav" or something ^^

I should really name all my elephants "Attacko." Infinite conquest victories anyone?

I my 1st couple of games I called my GP Farm just that, or SpecialistVille, my production centre Hammertown etc, but recently I just haven't bothered.
If I use a great general (not had one yet, only been playing BTS for a couple of weeks) I'd consider renaming the highly promoted unit (like I've seen on screenies).

I usually stick with the default names, although I have played come games where I marked the city with it's Specialization very overtly, By calling some of them Production North, South, Northeast, etc. And Commerce North, South, West, Southeast, etc. (I don't think GP are very useful so I don't specialize cities for them) I did much better in that game.
