DOes anybody else change the names of cities or units?

I change city names if I cannot remember them easily, which happens if they are unpronounceable to my Anglophone tongue. I change German and Austrian city names to match their German names (Munich to München, for instance, and Vienna to Wien). Sometimes I change the names of conquered cities to salute my empire's victories. (Delhi becoming New Cuzco, or Babylon becoming "Incan Glory").

My great generals, very often, are renamed.

Usually in this format:

<Aggressive insulting prefix> <Large number>

e.g. Soulpuncher 45000

In a multiplayer game, it is a sad mournful day when the world announces that Soulpuncher 45000 has died gloriously in combat

I occasionally rename units. Mainly these are highly promoted naval units, and purely for flavour. I'd like it if there was a way to rename stacks (e.g. 8th Army, 1st Army, 22nd Guards Tank Army, etc).

I'll sometimes rename cities to remind me what they are for (e.g. "Commerce City 2", "Artillery Factory"). Comes in handy when I have 50+ cities.

I was playing a mod that has both the Huns and The_J's StartingPoints mod, and I chose a large Europe map. Because I didn't know the names of the cities in the area, I named them "Danube", Upper Danube" and "Lower Danube" (Because the Huns start along the Danube River). I only got a break when I founded Venetia.

I recently created a super medic, so I renamed him... Super Medic.

So creative it hurts :D

I guess it is better than naming a city Crabs so that you can say, "Yay, I have Crabs!"

Not that I have ever done so.

I sometimes rename captured enemy cities to fit in with the "flavor" or language of my own empire, but still bearing resemblance to their original names. For instance, when I play Korea, Japan or China I find it fun to mentally transcribe the captured city's name into my empire's language and then romanizing it back to alphabetic. For instance, Paris would become Ba Li, P'ari or Parisu.

As for units, I love renaming highly (or somewhat) promoted ones :)

Woodsman 2 or 3: "Ranger"
Guerrilla 2 or 3: "Mountaineer"
City Raider 3+Barrage 1: "Citysmasher" - I may end up doing this for a lot of cannons!

Also Medic when appropriate. One really nifty one was a Gunship with major Medic upgrades. It was named "Medevac" haha!

Edit: Ah. Pre-Marine era I might call my Rifleman a "Marine" if it has that same promotion. Or name a modern advanced infantry unit "Commando" or "Delta", if it's got the Commando promotion (use enemy roads).
Lastly. Cavalry units with both Flanking 2 and Mobility will be known as "Fast Cav" or something ^^

Interesting.

Isn't that city right down the coast from The Gold Diggers?

I name my first warrior/scout "Doctor Gonzo." After that my warriors are named:
Dr. Who
Who's Next
Patrick Troughton
Patrick Stewart
Matt Decker
KHAN!!!

After that I get bored.

Can't say I've ever renamed units or cities (too much effort :p), but I have taken to renaming my leaders in recent games. The latest: Godzilla of Japan. :D

I love it! I'm gonna start trying that! It could be used if you're going for a specific victory condition as an entertaining reminder. I think I know what Godzilla of Japan's VC would be.

Named the city Crabs, or gotten crabs? :D

If I got a crab, I am pretty sure I would name him George. And then I would eat him. Crabs are delicious.

I've always renamed the leader. It has never occurred to me to use my name or the default one. Usually, I try to pick a name that sounds right for the civ in question, if I know one. Otherwise, I pick something that just strikes my fancy or sounds good in the various ways that the AI's address me.
