...although this is not purely a civ4 problem, I hope anybody here can answer this question....

I recently installed new memory into my pc
2 modules of 512MB DDR400 ram

there were 2 modules of 256MB DDR? ram

but here it comes... Now WindowsXP tells me I have 512MB physical memory, DXdiag tells the same thing?!?
But PCWizard2010 does find both modules and tells me I´ve got 1024MB ram !!!

How do I solve this and (out of curiousity) how did I cause this to happen?

The old and the new RAM is not working correctly together. That's apretty common thing if the modules are not having the exact same specifications.
Try to permutate the module order in the slots, and/or lower the RAM timings. In the worst case you will be just be able use the two 512MB modules.
