Does anyone build Wonders? I'm really put off by the astronomical turn counts required.

And what about the Heroic Epic? You have to have a barracks in every city. When does someone ever have a barracks in every city? Especially if you are doing any kind of expansion or conquering.

Yeah i never bother, the few times i have tried in my hammer citys, Eygpt always builds them all before me.

i throw up a wonder whenever i don't have any buildings or units i need immediately. they don't cost any upkeep and if someone beats me to it, i get 100% of the production back as gold, as opposed to building wealth at 10%

plus alot of them have really good bonuses. building a big empire? Machu Pichu will take your economy from decent to godlike.

Wonders is one way of reaching what you want to reach (be it military, cultural, or scientific victory) and if you have a high production they can reward themselves quickly since they cost no maintenence and always give great people and culture. Marble and tradition trees give a large bonus to wonder building as well. The egyptians have a further bonus to it. (I think the time is halved if you have all three.) Switching a city to production to crank it out quicker can also be worth it.

I usually seem to get the Pyramids, they're a pretty dang good wonder.

Some of them, I've built stonehenge and the colossus a couple of times, and the oracle.

It kinda shows what they are trying to do, ie slow expansion and slow the conquest game. However for this to work the rewards need to be reasonably worth it and this doesn't seem to be.

Yeah, I can never justify waiting 30-50-100 turns to build one of these things. I forgot about the 100% money return though, that could be mighty helpful.

I was put off wonders when I first saw how crappy Pyramids, GLH, and Colossus were compared to their Civ IV counterparts. I've come around to many of the later ones though.

National wonders, however, seem terrible. A prereq building in every city? I'm not doing that.

Play Egypt, with that policy that speeds up Wonders, it works wonders.

And Stonehenge is quite useful in the start of the game if you want a cultural victory.

It definately requires a focused approach - I find that one of the things I look at more in tech than I did in 4 - I also end up seeing what wonders I will unlock as well.

For the most part, they are good, but I think the power of them generally speaking is less than what it was in 4.

I agree with the benefits of the 'failiure gold', with maintenance sometimes being painful, trying to build something that is ultimately maintenance free OR getting cash is a bonus.

Alternately move in next to the Egyptians and let them do the hard work. :)

Yep you can't just decide to build one at random, you need to have a plan and also get lucky. Today with egypt I got Stonehenge and the Oracle at my capital, but had I gone for the pyramids I'd have lost as they were built 2-3 turns after my stonehenge. That's quite worrisome considering I basically went scout/worker/stonehenge (emperor level).

This. I love Egypt and have had to force myself to pick other Civs in subsequent games.

With the new emphasis on Happiness with Civ5 vs past Civs, some of the Wonders can make a huge difference in your progress. To whit:

Eiffel Tower: +8 Happiness empire-wide
Notre Dame: +5 Happiness
Hanging Gardens: +1 pop in every city, +3 Happiness
Forbidden Palace: 1/2 unhappiness from number of cities (coupled with India civ, this is huge).

I remember a great many complaints about the number of worthless Wonders in previous Civs. They haven't gotten much better, but as always there should be a few Wonders that are always worth building.

I've started to plan my tech advances so that I can get Forbidden Palace as quickly as possible, thus shorting out one of the biggest penalties in Civ5 on higher difficulties. That's one thing the AI doesn't seem to do - target long term research on one or two goals. It should be possible for a human player to beat the AI to the best of the Wonders most of the time.

I agree. I found it difficult to not build wonders playing as Egypt. The bonuses are to good to ignore.

The establishment of an early production city and consistent production of wonders does great things for your early game advantage in terms of bonuses and increased production of Great People.

Anyone knows if for example when I have barracks in every city and I'll build Heroic Epic and then conquer/build new cities without barracks the Heroic epic will still work?

I know if you're one turn away and get a new city it cancels production
