Does anyone still play both Civ4 and Civ5?

I'm wondering if there's anyone here who plays both Civ5 and Civ4 regularly.

I played older Civ games (1 and 2), but missed out on Civ3 and Civ4. I really enjoy Civ5, but I'm considering buying Civ4 as so many people seem to love it.

My questions are: If you've played Civ5 and enjoyed it, do you find it difficult to go back to playing Civ4? Would you recommend getting into Civ4 now? Which expansion(s) are worth buying? The only thing I can see that'll really bother me is stacking units - I like one unit per tile.

NB: I don't want 'Civ5 sucks because...' replies - just curious about whether anyone plays and enjoys both games.

i sometimes boot up civ4, but that is to play fall from heaven 2 mod, it is really good!!

i would recommend getting civ4 plus its Xpacs, it is a good game and can be had for a good price these days

civ5 is where its at, but is no where at the maturity that civ4 is yet

I play BTS a lot these days. I write a lot of AARs and frankly, CivIV has better AAR potential in BTS and is more likely to be read and critique than CivV S&T.

I play CivV whenever I'm tired of looking at squares and stacks, which is the only thing CivV has over CivIV anyway.

I have Civ4 and all the expansions but I never play them. I guess I'm one of the rare folks who takes CiV for what it is and doesn't complain about how it's different (for better or worse) than previous installments. There's plenty to offer in CiV for someone who is willing to try different strategies, different Civs, and different combinations. I personally never get bored with it. Civ games are one of the few I can say that about!

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to buy it - £6.85 for the game plus 2 expansions is too much of a bargain to miss out on :D

CivIII complete is available for a fiver from direct2drive. I still play it and there's still a thriving modding community. Opinions vary about this version, but it has a multitude of fans even after 10 years. Oh, and I play CivIV still, but overall, CivV is taking over, slowly but surely...

I was wondering about getting CivIII as well - complete edition is £2.99 on Steam.

I started the Civ series with III, then IV, then V.

I got bored with Civ V and kept thinking about Civ III, as there were certain aspects of that game that I craved. So, I went back to III and played several games. It brought back a lot of great memories, but after awhile I got that out of my system and have now been playing IV again. I've been playing many games at IV, and none at V, as I've found that there are so many things in IV that I think are superior to V, so much so that I seem to have no desire to play V again.

I'm ready for VI though...

I play Civilization V and Civilization IV BtS,at random times.
I think they are both very good games, and I enjoy both.
But some aspects of Civilization V annoy me:bad dipomacy and other bugs.
The good news is that they release many patches that fix some of those bugs.

As per my sig.

CiV doesn't have the replay value and I'm not prepared to try every patch they push out to fix the mess - it can't. I'm really hoping Civ 6 is a return to form, until then it is modded SMAC for me.

I know this forum is supposed to be about V, but since you seem to be interested in III also, I had to reply.

What I loved about III: Playing Persia, because the Immortals kicked ass!; the background music was so awesome; Cavalry-they had such huge movement, a flaw in the game, but it sure was fun; the "A-choo" from Riflemen; the ju-ju animation of the Aztec Jaguar Warrior; the Warrior "Arrgh!"; the rattle noise at the end of the Tank animation; the Worker movement from tile to tile; a few others I can't remember right now.

The worst thing about III is the Coruption mechanic. You just have to play with a limited number of cities (15-17 or so?), and raze the rest.

If you have a large wide monitor you should change the resolution. Here's how to do it from Steam: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=885318

I sorta lost the feel for civ games when civ5 came. Its not a real civ game (mainly because of no diplomacy whatsoever) but it can be fun when it comes to combat (at least on land since naval warfare and invasions across water seem to have suddenly become something impossible for the game makers to achieve). Theres where it actually is better than civ4. To do combat in civ4 feels very old and boring now that i have become familiar with 1 upt so i dont play civ4 anymore because of that.

Civ III and civ IV are such good deals now that they're well worth it if you missed them or even just want them digitally backed up. I actually like steam for its convenience, I now play civ IV and civ III using steam instead of using my game disks.

I'm mostly on to civ V these days, however. Once every couple months I'll play a game or two of Final Frontier + in civ 4 bts or maybe some civ III complete, but 90+ % of my civ gaming these days is in civ V.

I thought it was funny, some dude wanted to buy a used copy. Which is ridiculous because a new game is so cheap. A used copy is useless anyway.

I bought Civ V when it first came out, played it a bit, but it felt flat. I loved the hex and the 1-Unit-Per-Tile, but city infrastructure and civ strategy felt meh. I would sometimes pull out Civ 4, but Civ V was just good enough that I couldn't stand the square grid and the unit stacks in 4...so I stopped playing Civ completely.

Then the December patch came out and I played 5 a bit, then the March patch came out and I played it a LOT. Tried 4 in April and exited 6 minutes later. Patches over the summer only made 5 better, the map scripts are great, the buyable civs are great, and I still play this game nearly every day.

I too wish diplo was better, but the maps, combat, policies, UA all really work for me. I can't play 4 anymore, but I really want some added mechanics etc, so 2K PLEASE give us an expansion and 2 new civs post haste...

I dont but I just hate how warfare is in Civ 5. I want to get my hands on SoD. Its almost impossible to make crushing assaults in Civ 5 without nukes. :crazyeye:

Yeah, playing both - CiV every once in a while, if I'm in the mood for a "classic" Civ-style game from 4000 BC to 2000 AD and everything. It's a good game to play on the side and I still quite like the combat system (at least more than stacks of doom), so it also scratches a tactical itch.

Civ 4 for all the mods - especially the big total conversion mods (like FfH2 or Planetfall) or the "expansion-y" mods (like Legends of Revolution), if I'm in the mood for either fantasy/sc-fi or something big and sprawling to sink my teeth in.

In total, my Civ play time is about 2/3 Civ 4, 1/3 Civ 5. But I still don't regret getting the full special edition for Civ 5, I still like how beautiful and well-made the game is (in terms of production quality, i.e. presentation, soundtrack etc,).

Cheers, LT.
