does the AI ever give in to demands?

Even when I have a military 12X their strength, they will still say that I should 'come and take' one out of their 5 silver sources. Have you ever had an AI give in to a demand? and on that subject, have the AI ever demanded something from you?

Sometimes they give in, other times they don't even if I have a huge and technologically superior military. I've never seen the AI demand something from me.

They request cash or luxuries plenty often, but never demand.

And no, I've never seen them give in to a demand, regardless of relative power. Just out of pure stubbornness, I usually preceed my DoWs with demands, but never to any avail, even when the troops are arrayed for attack (and clearly visible to the AI).

On easier levels they give into demands, but i think Warlord and above they do not

this all ties in to the problem of diplomatic stupidity all over the place in this game.
what i think would be a simple and better system would be that an AI that is close in proximity to you would give in to your demands easier. But as the game goes on, your bullying of neighbors and such would prompt negative relations around the world so that by the renaissance you could see neighbors that aren't as close to you begin to be wary and maybe even plot agaisnt you because of your aggresive diplomacy with your neighbors.

The point is, the AI should give in to demands in order to save its own ass but over time this should make the other powers which are more powerful or more distant (so that you are less of an immediate threat to them) be more hostile to you. If demands were accepted more often, then an AI declining would more often be a real pretext for war.

Managed a few times to extort a little gold or open borders, but that was after they were beaten.

The only time I've seen them give in, I have not only been stronger, but have had my army massed on their border ready to invade....

I don't remember ever getting them to accept a demand. The AI requests for free stuff is the same as demand, only the flavor of the text changes depending on whether they like you or not. If Gandhi is happy to neutral with you then he "Requests" some free gold, hostile and he tells you to give him the gold or die, at least from what I've seen.

You can make demands, such as persuading them to make peace with a city state. I think that's broken too though since if you offer them a trade to make peace they'll do it for free anyway.

I haven't had problems demanding tribute, at least when the game came out. Haven't really played recent patches. But there were many times when I'd want to declare war, and I'd demand gold, they'd give in, then I'd declare war anyways since it seems like there's no negative side to it. Diplomacy is such a joke in this. They need to make allies more beneficial, like a trade network, or free tech trading/research agreements, or something. And since the civs are crazy, I'd never trust one as my ally anyways.

The AI does occasionally give into demands, but as other people have said, "I have 10 times as many units than you, and am the reason you only have 2 cities left" isn't a guarantee that they'll give in to your demands. (I don't know what is, though.)

I like when you have there last city surrounded with only one hit left on it, and they wont even let you enter the peace negation screen. I mean, sure I have declared war on you three times, and we have only been at war for 10 turns, but that isnt any reason to lose on purpose. Its an AI, it shouldnt have a since of pride.

There's no peaceful "freebie" request option in the game as in Civ IV: "Could you possibly spare this for a good friend?"

WHY? Come on! Not that hard to code in! Would make diplomacy less 1D. =|

There's "request", and there's "demand". The former is the peaceful request.

Since they have both, I'd really rather they had implemented the demand as an ultimatum. If your demand is turned down, you automatically declare war.

The AI's 'requests' are also it's demands, I'm pretty sure.

I've had an AI that was aggressive towards me, with a much larger military than me, request stuff from me. I viewed it as political/diplomatic doubletalk "Oh, would you please spare 1400 gold? So I don't have to invade your puny little empire?"

The only demand problem I have is that in the past I had some success asking other nations "Don't Settle Near Me" if I was on good terms with them. Now it doesn't seem to matter. That's a real shame, because typically that's what I want most. I hate having another Empire drop a settler for some doofy tiny city in the middle of my empire. :(

Haven't demanded goods, but I demanded that Caesar stop settling cities next to me. This usually ends in a re-buff/ insult. Yesterday he said something like... "I guess diplomacy isn't one of your strong suits but I will give in to your demands."

I have managed to demand a civ make peace with another.

edit: I would like the ability to make requests of friends (friend = you have pact of cooperation)

I have seen Bismark make a demand in a Scenario I crafted. It was on Diety, but the handicap I was using for the scenario was prince.

I have never seen the AI ever give in to demands in Civ 5. In Civ 4 I would see it happen when they were outgunned and out-tech'd.

Has anyone ever got the AI to agree to a defensive pact? I only managed it once, and it was in a game I was cheating/testing something with. In this game I started with 5 mil gold coins, and I formed a close relationship with Russia over a few hundred turns. When I asked what it would take for a defensive pact, she asked for about 91,000 gold coins.
