Don Quijote rules the world - SG for RFC

Next player should try to spread christianism to our european cities, specially madrid to help with the Spiral Minaret building. We'll need a galley to get them there, since the one we had was sunk during my turnset. We could whip it in a coastal city, but we should try to always end turn with the galley inside a city, to avoid barb attack.

Yeah, I can't help myself mentioning that that's why I didn't send it to meet the Malinese.:)

We should definitely make contact again with all the civs that we have lost contact with. As we are about to research Optics on our next turn I think we can afford to trade Compass/Guilds to those who don't yet know these techs.

Blizzrd is right. We might need another explorer. BTW, have we met the Russians at all? They might have some fur for us.

turn 1: Had Cadiz work the Lisboa Horse
turn 2: finish researching optics, move on to astronomy... African trireme is exploring Africa still, and we make peace with Portugal(only thing they offered was capitulation, so we just signed a neutral peace treaty)Built workshop on city ruins of Lisboa, and send troops to garrison barecelona. War ele destroyed near melilia with our pike, and a mine is being built.
3: Madrid finished Knight, we move on to the spiral minaret, workers build some improvements in iberia.
4: We meet etiopia via triremes, we trade china a horse for silk, and rice, and cadiz finished harbor, is working on a galley now
5: Santiago begins on building a galley, and barecelona begins on a caravel garrison our trireme in santiago. and african trireme is still exploring
6: improvements build, a second missionary built in Mellilia, waiting for galley to be built.
7: Greece builts the AP, hammers for us :D and build more improvements in Iberia
8: We meet Russia, vote for russia as AP resident, build a monastery in mellilia great spy born in Santiago, sending him to Bareclona until we get more spies.
9: Cadiz>galley to mellilia load missionarys on it, and wait in mellilia.
10: Peace with saladin (after babylon becomes their vassals) (gives him compass for peace) trireme destroys barb trireme near gibraltir, missonary's unload, spread christianity to Cadiz and Madrid, send a galley to pick up last missonary, and turn ends.

I'm about to play my set. I opened up the save and things look good. Before I play, I have a question:
I see the caravel will be built in 7 turns. Do we want to sail to America and spawn our conquerors without gunpowder? Or should we risk it and let France learn gunpowder in 19 turns and steal it from them with the great spy? I can use the caravel to circumnavigate from west to east and discover America from the Pacific so that we get the circumnavigation bonus. I don't feel like the AI will be building caravels for trans-oceanic exploration anytime soon, most of them don't even know compass yet, but I don't want to ruin our chances of getting conquerors.

I see the caravel will be built in 7 turns. Do we want to sail to America and spawn our conquerors without gunpowder?

Nooooo, we need Conquistadors! Try to get a Great Engineer, whom almost completely can research Gunpowder. If you reach the New World before 1450 you're safe.

Also, I suggest trying to capture Ponta Delgada if we have enough spare units and galleys, because of the whale.

Ponta Delgada should just be left alone for now, unless you can capture it shortly after a plague. Amphibious attacks are often costly.
It won't help you in domination anyway.
Every city should have a warrior for the coming plague.

Where's Divine Right (from Mali)?

I've traded for Divine right in my turnset.

Next player should micro santiago, it's not working the seafood and you can take the spy out.

Build some workboats to improve seafood.

I think we should farm the plains and grasslands near Madrid. The city doesn't have the surplus food to work plains cottages. And we should give take the second sheep away from Barcelona and let Madrid work it, in my opinion.

We could trade our world map with China for 70 gold.

Trade our iron away for 10 turns so we can build warriors.

Can't we use the workers as plague fodder? We have many more then we need (there are 3 fortified near mellila, for example).

Turn 0: 1310 AD
Great Spy moved out of Barcelona, sent to explore Scandinavia.
Santiago and Madrid citizens moved around. Moving sheep from Barcelona to Madrid means caravel won't be built until 16 turns from now.
Russia declares war on Arabia/Irak

Turn 1: 1320 AD
Christianity spreads to Barcelona; the missionary being constructed in Mellila is superfluous, I'll keep him around and send him to America on the caravel being constructed.

Turn 2: 1330 AD
Melilla finishes Christian Missionary, begins Harbor.

Turn 3: 1340 AD
Cadiz finishes trireme, I send it North to chart the coast of the British Isles. Work begins on a work boat.

Turn 4: 1350 AD
Melilla finishes harbor, begins work boat.
Santiago finishes Trireme; begins Christian Monastery.

Turn 5: 1360 AD
Turkey spawns and becomes Rome's vassal. Netherlands is Germany's vassal.
I route our great spy from Scandinavia to Turkey. We could steal Gunpowder from them instead of France.
Turn 6: 1370 AD
Melilla finishes work boat. Begins library.
Cadiz finishes work boat. Begins Christian Monastery.

Turn 7: 1380 AD
Mali builds Spiral Minaret. Madrid switches to build Christian Temple.
Santiago finishes Christian Monastery. It begins a harbor.

Turn 8: 1390 AD
Madrid finishes temple; begins Monastery.

Turn 9: 1400 AD
Santiago&Cadiz finish Monasteries and begin lighthouses.

Turn 10: 1405 AD
France appears to have built Arguim

You all should know that Triremes can be upgraded to Caravels, right? And the whip should allow the production of a Caravel much faster than 16 turns. Given that we learnt Optics 20 turns ago, how do we still not have a Caravel?

Key questions:

We currently have 10 workers and nothing for them to do. I hope they can serve as plague fodder, but I fortified 2 in each Iberian city (except Cadiz, which only has one worker fortified). Three African workers are building a useless watermill in desert near Melilla, but they don't have anything better to do. Our unit maintenance is 9 gold per turn; I don't know if anyone wants to save money by deleting workers.

Barcelona is one turn away from building a caravel, France is 6 turns from learning Gunpowder and we are 7 turns from learning astronomy. Our Great Spy is in Anatolia (I've never seen Turkey build their capital in Konya instead of Sogut before). I think learning gunpowder before making contact with the natives is a very good thing to do; if people are uneasy with waiting 6 turns for France to learn Gunpowder, we can use the Great Spy in Turkey and steal gunpowder from them. The spy in Barcelona can ride in the galley currently moored in Cadiz to cross the Mediterranean to Anatolia.

We also need to think about New World City locations. I'll see if I can cook up a map showing my preferences.

Blizzrd,

I forgot to upgrade the tiremes when the Spiral Minaret was built by Mali. Before then, we didn't have enough cash.

In any case, we still have a monopoly on optics and we will have a caravel next turn.

Lets just stick in our plan and steal Gunpowder from France. It will be faster given that the spy from Barcelona takes 8-10 turns to be in Anatolia with a 50% stationary discount. Remember that we are not stealing anything without it. Thus the Great Spy should come back from Anatolia to France asap and the spy from Barcelona should go to that French city, where the stealing is cheapest, ASAP. If France gets Gunpowder in 6 turns we will probably be able to steal it when the get it, if our spy is moved out immeatidely.

What's the fuss about not waiting to get Gunpowder before conquerors?? We don't even have a single caravel yet! By the time we are ready to meet the Incas, we'll most likely have Gunpowder. So our first caravel sails around the Cape Horn to meet the Incas, while the second goes through the Caribbean to meet the Mayas and Aztecs.

BTW, we should discuss which Aztec/Inca/Maya cities we'll keep and which raze. After we know which they have of course.

And please don't use our precious workers as plague fodder we need them in our colonies! We should trade our iron out for 10 turns and build warriors.

Tough luck losing the Minaret... I guess the stone trade with justinian wasn't vaiable anymore after my turnset...

Well, we can always claim a little bit of the African soil

Bad news, guys!
I won't be able to play until Wednesday/Thursday so if blizzrd and nody want to play next it's fine by me. I'm really sorry but the uni comes first in my priority list :(

In my experience the Aztec UP means they usually have a huge stack of workers for us to capture so we won't have a labor shortage if we expose our old world workers to the plague.

We already know that there are at least 3 cities in the New World (Tenochtitlan, Cuzco and Cichen Itza). Personally, I think Cuzco and Tenochtitlan need to be razed because they are not on the coast. Guadalajara and Veracruz cover Mexico nicely and Trujillo and Ica handle Peru pretty well.

I'll play my next set then in about 6-8 hours time.

Turn 0
Due to the Spinal Minaret production being cashed out, we have a bit of coin. But our economy is tanking and needs a serious kick along. We start with a treasury of 359g + 1gpt. Time to do some trading!

Trade Theology to India for Aesthetics + 160g. Trade Crab to India for Incense. Babylon will open borders with us, so I agree. Trade Compass to Babylon for Literature. Trade Alphabet to Khmer for 30g. Trade Code of Laws to Mali for 70g and to Ethiopia for 50g. Demand 4gpt from Ethiopia for 10 turns of peace. Trade Compass to Russia for 90g. Trade Horseback Riding to China for 20g, lowering them from Furious to Annoyed. Now they are prepared to trade resources, so I trade Horse to China for Banana + Silk. Trade Compass to England for 60g and Open Borders. Upgrade our Sheep for cash deal with Germany from 2gpt to 4gpt. Trade Wine to Russia for 4gpt (sadly no Furs available). Demand 10g from Portugal for 10 turns of peace. Trade Wine to England for 4gpt. Trade Compass to Netherlands for 40g.

After all that trading, we can now afford to raise the science rate from 70% to 80% and finish with 899g - 6gpt.

Cadiz and Santiago are queued to start Lighthouses, but neither has a Christian Temple yet so I switch both of these cities to building Christian Temples. I assign a Spy specialist again in Santiago.

The time has come to acquire the Spanish Netherlands, which are rightfully ours. I move out our Knights, Trebuchets, Swordsmen and one Longbow to begin a march north towards Amsterdam. I move our spy out from Barcelona towards Bordeaux. I see that our Great Spy is currently in Turkey, but rather than steal from Turkish cities that are a long way from our capital, it would be much better to steal Gunpowder from France after they learn it 5 turns from now (just when our discount will be a maximum). Redirect our Great Spy towards Paris.

Turn 1
Madrid finishes Christian Monastery and starts on a Courthouse. Barcelona finishes a Caravel and starts on a Christian Temple. Our relations with China continue to improve and we can now Open Borders, which I agree to. Seeing as China likes us so much now, I ask them for 4gpt and they agree. Trade Alphabet to China for 120g. Trade Theology to Khmer for 40g. Ask for 1gpt from Mali for 10 turns of peace. We now have 1043g -3gpt at 80% science. Send our Explorer (currently in India) to head towards Japan. Wake up workers to chop the forest north of Madrid. Cadiz and Santiago whip their Christian Temples.

Turn 2
Santiago finishes a Christian Temple and starts a Spy. Melilla finishes a Library and starts a Christian Temple. Cadiz finishes a Christian Temple and starts an Explorer. Barcelona whips a Christian Temple. Open Borders with Russia. Ask for 4gpt from Vikings for 10 turns of peace. Trade Compass to India for 100g. Trade Compass to China for 30g plus their World Map. :D

Declare War on Netherlands and move our troops adjacent to Amsterdam.

Turn 3
Madrid finishes Courthouse and starts a Crossbow. Barcelona finishes a Christian Temple and starts a Christian Monastery. Cadiz finishes an Explorer and starts a Lighthouse. Santiago finishes a Spy and starts a Lighthouse. A random event spawns for Madrid and I choose to pay the gold to get a Great Military Instructor in our Capital.

It's good to be cashed up! Trade Sheep to Khmer for 2gpt.

Our Trebuchets begin to bombard the defences of Amsterdam. Our Triremes have returned from various scouting locations to our home waters, which are now filled with various Dutch and Barbarian naval vessels. We sink 2x Dutch Galleys and 1x Barbarian Trireme. Our Great Spy infiltrates Paris.

Turn 4
Trade Guilds to Mali for Paper + World Map + 20g. Trebuchets reduce the defences of Amsterdam to zero. There are currently 6x Longbows, 1x Pikeman and 1x Catapult defending Amsterdam. Upgrade all of our Triremes to Caravels. Our 2nd Spy has now also arrived in Bordeaux. We could steal 1200g from France! But Gunpowder is the priority so no stealing cash just yet. Given how wealthy we are, I raise our science rate to 100% so that Astronomy will finish in 1 turn (instead of 2 turns). We end the turn with 668g -33gpt at 100% science.

Turn 5
Astronomy is learnt, start Education next. Madrid finishes a Crossbow and starts an Observatory. One of our Caravels rounds the tip of South America. Seeing as we will circumnavigate within the next couple of turns, I trade Optics +155g to Greece for Philosophy. Our Explorer meets Japan (Annoyed). Cancel our Sheep for 2gpt deal with France and trade Sheep to Japan instead for 5gpt. Upgrade our Galleys to Galleons.

Trebuchets pound Amsterdam and live to fight another day (I think our attack odds were about 70%). Now that all of the defenders have taken collateral damage, our Knights and Swords go to work. 1x Pikeman and 6x Longbows are removed, leaving 1x Catapult and 1x Longbow for next turn.

Steal Gunpowder from France.
Spoiler :
attachment.php
Our Caravel in the Caribbean Sea meets Maya and we get our first set of Conquerors which spawn on the Silver between Yax Mutal and Olximche.
Spoiler :
attachment.php
Leaving Yax Mutal for now, I choose to attack Olximche first because it will act as a canal city for us. Our Cannon attacks at 80% odds and survives, leaving damaged defenders which don't last long. Olximche is captured for no loss.

Turn 6
Santiago and Cadiz finish building Lighthouses and start Observatories. Melilla finishes a Christian Monastery and starts a Courthouse. A Great General is born in Madrid and I attach him to one of our Galleons and rename this unit Christoph Colombus.
Spoiler :
attachment.php
Our Explorer in China meets the Mongols who are Furious. Our troops eliminate the last defenders from Amsterdam and the Dutch are eliminated.
Spoiler :
attachment.php
Upgrade our Knights to Conquistadors and our Trebuchets to Cannons (all now situated in Amsterdam).

Our Explorer pops the goody hut in Cuba for 40g. We meet the Aztecs and declare war. Our 2nd wave of Conquerors spawns in Olximche, which is handy as it concentrates our force and will mean a quick end to the Mayan war.
Spoiler :
attachment.php
Request 90g from Rome. Trade Optics to France for 400g. We finish with 1006g -83gpt whilst still at 100% science.

Turn 7
Barcelona finishes a Christian Monastery and starts a Christian Missionary (Amsterdam is Jewish). Melilla's borders expand to encompass the Ivory to the SW. Cannons pound the defences of Yax Mutal, which has hired some mercenaries. Yax Mutal defenders (Crossbow, 2x Archer, 2x Holkan and 1x Warrior) are eliminated and the city is razed.
Spoiler :
attachment.php
It had no infrastructure and Chichen Itza is a better city for us to keep now that we have Olximche as a canal city.

Santiago whips Observatory. Mongolia vassalises to China and Babylon vassalises to Arabia. Christoph Colombus loads up 3x Holkans which head back towards Spain to act as plague fodder in our home cities. We kill a German Explorer outside of Amsterdam whilst most of our units inside the city continue to heal.

Turn 8
Madrid finishes an Observatory and starts a Settler. Santiago finishes an Observatory and starts an Ampitheatre. A random event near Barcelona gives our Monastery +4 culture (for 16g).
Spoiler :
attachment.php
Cadiz whips an Observatory. After sailing through the canal city of Olximche, we meet Inca who have just captured Tucume and our 3rd set of Conquerors spawns north of this city. Tucume is razed.

Our caravel in the Pacific connects our maps with our knowledge of Chinese maps and our ships get a circumnavigation bonus. Now we can start trading our World Map around. There are a lot of interested customers - our map sells for a total of 680g! Our Explorer pops the goody hut in Colombia for 46g. A German worker is captured in Denmark. Our workers hook up the Ivory in North Africa.

Maya are willing to Capitulate and give us Drama as part of the deal. I don't want their Capitulation, but we do want Drama. So I broker a peace deal that includes Drama but doesn't include Capitulation.
Spoiler :
attachment.php
Then I Open Borders with Maya. We can finish off Chichen Itza after the Aztecs are dealt with.

Turn 9
Santiago finishes an Ampitheatre and starts a Theatre. Barcelona finishes a Christian Missionary and starts a Theatre. Cadiz finishes an Observatory and starts a Theatre. Maya collapse to Natives! Our troops rush in and capture Chichen Itza (Ciudad Real).
Spoiler :
attachment.php
Spread Christianity in Olximche. Pick up Jaguars in a Galleon for more plague fodder in the home cities. More world map trading for a total of 60g.
