3568 BC

At the outskirts of the settlement, at the top of a hill, a young girl sat. She was watching the river Thermadon emptying into the sea, and as she traced her eyes across the water, down to the beach, and then around to the sheep grazing in the plains, she gave out a sigh.

"The river, the sea, the sheep." she murmured. "Pride of the Amazons."

Her grandmother had brought her up with grand stories of adventure; of their people's journey across the land, battles against raiders, and their eventual crossing of the sea. She looked out again at the vast waters, but she'd never once found a trace of the bridge the stories had said the gods provided the Amazons as an escape from "the horrible works of men." She'd always found that funny; from the tales she'd heard of the gods, you'd think they'd have enough trouble between them without having to worry about a tribe such as theirs.

"And besides," she grinned as she spotted a figure running up the hill towards her, "we brought the horrible men right along with us."

The boy who had dashed up the hill and was now gasping for air was Eumenes, her childhood friend. Or, as her grandmother had put it, her "baby-hood friend." She had known him for as long as she had known anything, so Granny must be right about that, she thought.

"Sit down, Eum," that was her nickname for him, "you're making me exhausted going on like that." He shook his head.

"Doh..." he gasped, "Dora's back. She's down at the beach... hey, wait!"

The girl had leapt to her feet at the mention of the name, and she dashed down the hill after hearing where she was. Dora. The Explorer. When their people was deciding if it was time to stop wandering about the island from one grazing field to another and settle down permanently, Dora was the first to disagree. And as soon as the tribe's leaders went about looking for what would be their final home, Dora declared she would go on once more to map out the world. Dora was one of her mother's closest friends, and as such, the girl had grown up looking up to her, so when The Explorer made her declaration, the girl wanted to be one of her companions. But on the third time she begged the woman to bring her along, Dora took her aside and spoke to her as seriously as she ever had before, "The tribe has much greater plans for you, my dear." Dora patted the girl on the head, "I, on the other hand, am just a selfish adventurer. And I would be ten times more selfish if I were to bring you with me."

That was years ago. Dora had sent back messengers from time to time, and people would gather around listening to stories of green forests, white forests, wild deer, and hills with pale, shining rocks. What tales would The Explorer herself have?

The girl gave a silent curse; she had just spotted the crowd in the beach when it began to disperse, and as she walked briskly to the spot, she passed excited pairs and groups of people talking animatedly, and making grand gestures with their arms. By the time she had gotten close to the place where the crowd had been gathered before, her steps were heavy with disappointment.

"You and your short legs, Eumenes." she thought bitterly. But as she shook her head and looked around the area again, something sketched into the sand caught her eyes.

"That's..." the girl began.

"Our island." a voice from behind finished. "Paradise, Amazonia, or whatever island those old crones decided to name it." The girl looked back and met Dora's jovial eyes.

"Lady Isadora!" the girl rushed back to give the woman a hug.

"Please, just Dora." the woman laughed. "And you're so tall I almost didn't recognize you, princess."

"Please, don't call me princess." the girl joined in with her own laugh. "And I'm still five fingers taller than Eum."

"As well as should be," Dora folded her arms across her chest, "your man needs to know who's going to be taking the lead." Spotting the glare the girl was starting to give her, she changed course, "So what do you think? Is this an island worthy of the Amazon people?"

The girl shot her a look before turning back to the drawing. "I've never thought the island was so... small."

Dora gave another hearty laugh. "You sound so disappointed."

"No, it's not that," the girl shook her head, "it's just that for the longest time, back when we were moving around from place to place, it always felt like ages before we'd get back to the river and have to start over again. Even when we did go to places we'd been to before, it was after such a long time that nothing felt familiar. But here, drawn on the sand, it just all looks so tiny. I'd just never realized our world was so small."

"Our island is small," Dora interrupted, "Our world is a much larger place." She gazed out across the sea to a sliver of a hint of green at the distance. "And someday, we will take it all back."

The girl whispered, "The world of men?"

"Our world." Dora said, and ruffled the girl's hair. "Someday, princess, I promise you. I'm going to get on that first plank they make that can float on water and get it all ready for you." the woman's laugh rang out again. "But tomorrow I set back out to keep the shadows at bay, so for tonight, we'll tell stories to Granny till Helios comes running back from Oceanus."

Dora put her arm around the girl's shoulders and began to lead her back to the settlement. "By the way, you should bring... what's your man's name again?"

"It's Eumene-" the girl started and stopped as suddenly. This time, her glare was ruined by the color on her cheeks.

Dora's laugh this time was soft and warm. "Looks like I will be needing to hear some stories from you as well."

They walked into the settlement met by cheers and salutations. "Ah, I cannot wait for the drinking and the fireworks!" Dora roared.

Good work Kaspog! :goodjob: I especially like the map.

Care to write for the Tribune in addition to continuing your story? There's no commitment necessary, write whenever you feel like it.

But you might prefer to write for Os tempos. ;)

Thanks for the responses :) If I think up of anything that fit in with any of the two papers' styles, I'll try and submit!
