New First Look: Himiko

I thought you can only have one endeavor of each type active at once? Isn't that part of Benjamin Franklins abilities, that he can have two of the same type?
That’s correct. So Himiko can only get +25% science at a time, unless we discover some shenanigans with Mementos.

Even so, 25% is a lot, especially with all the “yieldflation” we’ve seen from preview streams.

I like her kit from a design perspective: you are well-positioned to be friendly with most leaders due to free endeavor support, then you immediately get science from that, and ultimately you can pick a “safe” ally to run Friend of Wei. Unless your ally is also a science-focused civ, the yields will benefit you much more.

One thing I don’t know is whether the +25% science applies to Meiji’s science from overbuilding. I hope it does, balance be damned.

I like Queen Himiko's inclusion. She is one of my favourite if not my most favourite of the chosen leaders. And her model looks amazing to me, despite the community's first glances at it being criticizing. But I have to confess that I would have liked to see an Onna-Musha even more. A Japanese female leader, such as Tomoe Gozen or Hangaku Gozen. Himiko's appearance makes this impossible now, but that's not a bad thing. On the contrary, we are now able to get a male samurai leader in the future such as Oda Nobunaga, Takeda Shingen or Miyamoto Musashi.

Queen of Wa seems very very strong.

With 4 friends you get +16 science in the first era, and if you do your special project with four friends you get 100% science! Add to that all endeveurs you can support for free to get tons of other stuff.
Not friends, allies. You have to form an alliance before this can be used. Good luck getting four allies on most difficulties.

Yeah, I suspect of the leaders revealed this far, her utility is going to vary the most with difficulty.
And with Agendas *shudder*

I think people overestimate the saved influence from free endeavor support. It‘s more of a nice to have than a bonus that lends to a strategy. It may get better once we have 12+ player maps.

I thought ir was one endeveurs per type per leader, but one universal per type seems more balansed.

Still with 5 friends her science bonus 20 in era 1 and with that special endeveurs its actually 25 science, nothing to sneeze at.

Aren't there a normal science endeveurs as well? I wonder if that stacks?

The main ability is probably the free support endeveurs one.

There are no 5 friends in era one. There are only 5 players on the era one map, and one of them is you. The maximum is 4, and it‘s unlikely that you will be able to be friendly with all other players imo.

Is that the maximum amount of players on a good gaming PC on the largest map size?

Do we know if both leader and persona are included in base game ? OR is the persona part of deluxe or founders ?
High Shaman comes with the Founders Edition.

The "largest" map size right now is Standard (no large maps yet)
8 players, 3 in the Distant Lands
Do we know how to select which ones will be in the Distant Lands?
I asked a slightly similar question to Sarah a few weeks ago, and she indicated that it's possible to ensure that no civs are on the Distant Lands:

1. You can pick both the leader & civ for each player during setup, which applies to Antiquity (or Exploration and Modern, if using advanced start). However, you won't be able to specify a leader's preferred path at this time.
2. You can tweak the # of players in the game to leave Distant Lands unoccupied by other civs, which means they'd be home to only Independent Powers. More map types and settings to come.
3. While TSL won't be in at launch, it's something we're planning to add later.
In the time since I had misremembered what she said, and had been under the impression that you could specify which civs would start on the Homeland and which would start in Distant Lands.
In seeing videos from the 1.0 version, it's clear that such isn't the case, even through Advanced set up.
But I'm wondering if the last civs listed in Advanced Setup will always be the ones in the Distant Lands.
Has anyone observed this to be the case, or seen a video debunking this theory?

Edit: As you can see, Raptor's recent video suggests such, but the sample size is too small to be certain.

I would also assume that civs in slots 6-8 are in DL, but I haven’t verified this yet.

That makes sense from what she said
"tweak the # of players in the game to leave Distant Lands unoccupied by other civs"

So likely Slots 1-N are Homeland and the rest are Distant Lands (N depends on Map Size)

Himiko used her political wiles and, according to legend, shamanic charisma to bring (Japan/the land/her people) under her sway.
Is it just me, or does this read as a note left by the author to remind themselves to decide on the final wording at a later point that got published as is?

One thing I really enjoy about Himiko’s design is how her personas seem to fit great, thematically, with various periods of Japanese history.

While she might have lived more than a millennia before the Meiji era, her Queen persona’s emphasis on learning from foreign nations to fuel internal advancements fits the Meiji era along with earlier periods like Yamato Japan, a potential antiquity age civ.

Meanwhile, her Shaman persona’s more insular focus on internal culture and happiness, while neglecting scientific advancement, fits swimmingly with the potential addition of Edo Japan as an exploration age civ.

If we're going to get a semi-mythological, poorly-attested Japanese leader with no ties to the eras of their history we know the most about, then I am very glad that she mechanically functions as leaders from the familiar eras. We Edo and Meiji leaders here in spirit!
