Dragon Age 2 - Demo impressions

You forgot to mention the game only had three or four dungeons, and all the enemies(all four of them) have the exact same attack animations.

Yeah the caves and other areas are reused over and over again though at least they switch around the direction you go through them every other time-ish and it certainly hurts replayability. Though oddly enough I didn't actually get sick of the same locations on my first playthrough.

I did get tired of the same enemies but that was also a problem in DAO as well.

The recycled dungeons btw. are oh-so-subtly modified by installing concrete slabs in formerly open doorways.

that's a new map, see?! you can't go this way, only that way, so it's a totally new map!!

Hey, man, according to the Mass Effect (1) fanbois, that was a Good Thing. :p

As repetitive as they were, they were a lot nicer looking than many of the Mass Effect levels. I don't think they really tried to pretend it was a new map, just changed it around because they didn't have time to make more. Sadly :/

Were there any new enemy types? I'm about 1/2 way through the second act (near as I can tell) and I can only think of one enemy I've seen that wasn't in DA:O. The Shadow Assassin. And really, it seems to just be a rogue painted black...

borrowing this game from my brother. This thread seems to have died off. No one else played the game? I'm about to start it. I played a little bit over my brother's house the other day. It looked kind of interesting. But very easy. Combat on normal level was very easy. I upped it to hard, and it still seemed fairly easy.

Gonna check for patches right now...

I admit, that PC gamer review really convinced me to try the game. If that review is wrong, I'll be pissed.

It isn't a bad game, it has some improvements and does some things well. However it also has quite a few flaws as well. Its an okay game, especially if you are a fan of the Dragon Age series.

The chief problem with Dragon Age II is that it's so boring. The characters all vacillate between being boring and outrageously stupid (Anders reminding the audience that he's a raging homosexual every line of dialogue is an example of the latter). Combat requires almost no micromanagement, and 90% of the quests are fetching.

The plot of Dragon Age: Origins was just as generic as DA2's, but the difference is that the characters and good dialogue drove the former. The latter is just... bleh.

The characters in DAO, while I like them better, were a little boring at times too. Though DA2 really does overdo it with some of its characters, such as Anders, and they really pound it into you and don't stop reminding you that Isabelle is a total slut. It lacks subtlety.

anyone know how to transfer items to another character? I picked up some health potions, but have no idea how to transfer them to my warrior.

I'm playing a female rogue. I imported a character from DA1, but I think that character was an elf rogue. I guess she magically became human. I should have replayed DA1, because I don't remember any of the decisions I made with that character. I played DA all the way through with 3 different toons. I haven't played the expansion or DLC, however.

First impressions aren't good. But that's because I just got done playing the Witcher twice through. The witcher blows DA2 out of the water (granted, I have only played a tinsey bit of DA2). So it's a little jarring going from that game to this game. And I have to get used to right clicking everything. What's with bioware making everything right click lately?

Combat is a little too fast paced for my tastes so far. My rogue jumps around like crazy sometimes. I don't have a jump ability, but sometimes she will jump to an enemy. I'm not sure what that's all about. It's so fast paced, I can't keep track of what the rest of my party is doing.

Dialogue has been poor so far, and voice acting has been poor as well. I don't care for the female Hawke voice all that much either. I have to listen to her the entire game. I could play a male, but I'll stick with it.

edit: also do I still get backstab damage if I am behind a mob even when I'm not using the backstab ability? (which has a long cooldown)

The beginning of DA2 is actually the best part, because the story looks compelling until it drags to a halt once you get to the main city.

Your character it's self isn't what transfers over to the next game, it's the choices you made in the previous one, you'll also notice everyone calls your character hawk regardless of what you named her in the previous one.

yeah I was thinking my character was the same. Duh. I named her the same first name. No biggie.

I certainly hope the game gets more interesting as you go along. It's kind of boring so far. I guess because there's no clear, immediate threat or objective. I guess I'll just explore this city.

I really enjoyed the game, flawed as it is. Aveline, Isabella, Varric and Merill really made it for me. The Qunari are also pretty interesting...

Dungeon repetition, lack of plot focus and general same-y-ness are all valid criticisms however. With at bit more time and content, and a bit less Anders, this game could have been truly great.

It's worth noting that the Metacritic User scores are low mainly because of the dislike of the game amongst DA:O players. 82 is a fair score for the game IMO, good but not great.

I am just currently playing the Ultimate Edition of the first part and it's really great. I read a lot of negative about part two.

But after finishing part 1, I will most probably buy part 2.

Its okay, but has a tendancy to be just as annoying as the first one(in characters being bland and repative but you NEED certain characters for specific fights even though you HATE them)
