There shouldn't be a legal drinking age. Its better that the vicious alcoholics die young before they have a chance to cause real damage later in life.

I think that buying alcohol should be legal from 18, but if the parents feel like giving their children alcohol before that, no problem. We can't buy liquor, wine or strong beer legally in Sweden until we are 21 (because of the monopoly), but you can always go to a bar once you turn 18 or take a day-trip to Denmark...

I think that if you have to intoxicate yourself, which is sometimes neccesary for a variety of reasons, then alcohol is most definately the least harmful way one can do it - if one refrains from driving or operating heavy machinery. The way I see it banning people of certain age groups from indulging in the use of alcohol will only lead to other kinds of substance abuse, which are far more damaging to health and mind. In certain areas where age restrictions are enforced strictly it might be very much easier to buy illegal drugs than obtaining alcohol. I do see a problem with setting the age too low as this might have a negative effect on young people's ability to dismiss any peer pressure, but the negatives outwighs the positives in deciding that this is not something for the state to decide. Especially when it so miserably failing at combating substance abuse.

I disagree that alchohol is the least harmful form of intoxication. I mean it's safer than cocaine or heroine, but there's a whole slew of substances out there less likely to cause liver failure. on the other hand, these are probably not available to someone who is really stopped from drinking by the drinking age limit. Such a person might theoretically resort to abusing over the counter medicines, and that's very unsafe.

I still say that none of this is the government's business, though.

As a person who has been over the legal US age for several years, I think it should definitely be lowered to at least eighteen, with some leeway for parental discretion. I have been allowed to drink some alcohol on special occasions since I was thirteen, and now, ten years later, I am a responsible drinker.

Of course, I also had my first taste of whiskey at the age of two...doctor's orders. Seriously.

Probably why I never grew above 6 feet in height.

6 feet isn't short!

Anyway, in the UK a recent government study has shown a huge increase in underage binge drinking. By 'binge drinking' they mean buy lots of cheap cider at age 10 to 17 and drink it until you fall over and collapse.

The fact that this is a problem shows the inadequacy of drinking laws as they stand. If kids could talk to parents and teachers about their drinking habits/problems we would be in a much better state.

This is just one in a long list of reasons why I think we shouldn't have a legal drinking age. Less regulation, more responsibility and social training.

I never said it was. It's average, IIRC. But both my parents are taller, and to be more precise, I'm actually 5' 11". So, given my parents both being fairly tall, shouldn't I be tall as well? That doctor's whiskey-dipped finger stunted my growth, dammit! I should sue!

The average height for a male in the US is 5'7".

But, there are some remedies that involve whiskey. I remember having some on a particularly raw sore throat. It did help and it tasted great.

My first taste of alcohol was when I was 7 and my father let me try some of his Red Stripe beer.

Then again, maybe my growth was stunted by the fact that I became an everyday drinker of coffee when I was 6. I don't drink much now, but it was nice to have in the morning.

I would have to say at whatever age a person is required/able to serve their country militaristically, they should have the opportunity to legally drink alcohol. (Preferably, moderation will be exercised.)

14 to buy stuff under 20%, 16 over. Any age in presence of parents or other adults.

The most sensible standard out there

my first taste of beer made me hate it for ages.
never really drank it til this year (i'm 20 now).
beer is really something you can drink not to get drunk, because of the sheer volume that you have to consume, so beer-drinking can be responsible much easier than my earlier vodka-drinking :)
