DS3 - The secret war

Why not to attack Persia
An intelligence briefing by the ECIA

The Egytian Central Intelligence Agency has - on orders from Lt. 'Killer' M., former supreme commander of all Egytian Armed Forces (EAF) - undertaken a detailed study of Persian military power and analysed the strategic risks and benefits of an extended military campaign against Persia.

Chapter 1: Overview

As is well known, Persia is a peninsular a little smaller than half our southern province (136 tiles currently). Of these tiles, 14 lie outside the city radii and are thus unusable. Of the remaining 124, only 3 are grassland, the rest is mountains, hill and plains, all mined due to the lack of water.

Persia is culturally weak and militarily insignificant. However, the rugged terrain makes for excellent defence positins.

Persia has shown a firendly to hostile attitude in the past, currently, there exists a ROP between the Kingdom of Egypt and Persia. This has no effect on troop movements however, since both sides have chosen to blokade the narrows near Persian Watcher / Arbela

Chapter 2: Production and growth capabilities

Persias production capabilities are awesome for such a small state. Due to the narrow time frame for this study, no exact numbers were determined, but the high number of mined hills and the rion mines indicate an industrial strength to be reckoned with. Persian towns will probably be able to produce Pikemen companies at rates of 1 per every 2 to 8 turns, depending on city size.

The growth potential, however, is severely limitated. A closer look at the map will show towns such as Tarsus, Gordium and Sidon limited to using sea tiles. These will let the city grow slowly, but never give any production. Thus, the industrial power of Persia is basically not going to grow anymore. Other towns, located in the hills to the north will also soon reach a climax.

Chapter 3: Comparison to Egypt

As seen above, the Persian production capabilities will stagnate. on the other hand, our own power will continue to grow. Thus, the longer we hold back the stronger we will be compared to Persia.

Chapter 4:Military Considerations

Currently, the military powers in the world are basically on the smae level. All countries make extensive use of Shadow Warriors and Pikemen. only our own troops can employ Knights - this is an advantage we have to use now or loose it soon. Also, the Cavalry toops currrently under development promise another boost of attack strength, but may proove vulnerable to the automated weapons rumored to be under development. Thus, the use-time for Cavalry will possibly be short, too.

Considering this, military expansion should concentrate on opponents that have growth potetntial and might develop contermeasures to Cavalry if left alone. Two candidates for this are Russia and France - if either fights the other down she can grow to a serious power.

On the other hand, Persia will never amount to much. once we learn how to improve production output by concentrating production in Factories, we can overrun them with huge numbers of artillery that negate the defence bonus of terrain.

Chapter 5:Conclusions

Considering the above, it is obvious that our armies should be used to take Aztecia and Germany and grab as much as possible with current weapons technology of Russia and France as possible.

Perisa can be left to rot and then swallowed whole later on. Also, improved transportation on water will allow amphibious landing which will faciliate the Persdian campaign.

StackMan is evil, evil, EVIL! Must destroy.

Gastric: he will!!! Trust me! :D :mwaha:

It is just that it is better to have other die first... after all there's another continent out there........

Let`s gobble up Persia when convenient, and concentrate on the others while possible (i.e. while we are ahead in attacker strength).

Due to an event beyond my control (IE a roommate) i no longer have net access. Because of this i am going to have to drop out of this and all my SG games. I have no idea when/if i will ever get a phone line back anytime soon. I wish you guys luck and may still say hi from time to time while im at work.

had to play host to relatives tonight so could not get in all turns. Here is interim report.

690AD preturn I buy 2 aztec workers for 66 gold. One of our Shadow warriors defeats a pike in Texcoco and we get GL Cheops. For the time being he moves to Tenochtitian. Continuing the attack on Texcoco, we loss 2 SW's and capture the city. Tell the Sw's on R&R in the south to get back to the northern front.
700AD SW's capture Arbela (persian). We read the ECIA report and decide to stop our advance into Persia. Trade spices to Russia for 73 gold + 6 gpt.
710AD troop & worker movement.
(I) we learn about gunpowder start researching chemisty.
720AD Teotihuancan captured. Trade gems to Russia for 34 gold + 4 gpt + WM Also, I buy a worker from Joan for 29 gold.
730AD Cancel per turn deals with Bismark. trade Bis Engineering for theology.
We declare war on Germany.
(I) Aztec & France alliance vs Russia. Aztec declare war on Russia. Aztec cancel the gem trade with us.
740AD Bremen is captured from the Aztec. Our SW army attacks teh German SW army defending Stutgart. We lose 1 SW out of the Army but manage to kill their SW army. Our knights take out 3 pikemen and a SW kills the last defender. Stuttgart is ours.
(I) France makes peace with Russia.
750AD Atzcapotzalco captured from the Aztec.
(I) France starts Copernicus. Babylon builds Copernicus.
760AD We loss 2 knights but capture Frankfort.
** to be continued **

Germany is down to 1 city Berlin. Aztecs down to 2 cities and one should be ours next turn. I am going to wait till RoP with Aztec runs out before destroying them. Still have not found other continent and have run out of sea.
I am thinking of relocating the palace to Munich which we will capture from Russia in a turn or 2.

:goodjob:

With Shadow Warrior we do not need to worry about breaking RoP as it has no nationality. ;) However, the AI Civ will still get angry with you as we are occupying its cities. Unlike breaking of RoP, the other Civ will still be dealing with us normally as there is no formal breaking of RoP. :)

Dßphoenix - ****! I'm sorry for you - kill that guy/girls with a phone cord ;)

JJ: nice work! Especially getting an additional buffer against Persia - we could simply treat Arbela as a puffer zone :D

IIRC, Berlin would be a slightly better place for the Palace - I'll check on that again, but it's your game to play ;)

What happened at Arbela was its cultural boundaries expanded and it would have given the X-man a chance to tell us to move our troops from the choke point.
With respect to the Aztec; I intend to trade with Monty for every tech I can get from him in tech for tech deals the turn I will be destroying him. I know he has education and printing press.
How does moving the palace to Munich sound? Or should I move the palace to Berlin?

JJ: good call on both Persia and Monty!

The Palace - I'd jump it to Berlin, but that's just becaue that town is more flip prone. it doesn't really matter though, Munich is a little bit to much east, but better for pressuring Russia.......

760AD ** Continued **
(I) We learn Chemistry start researching Metallurgy
770AD Tlacopan captured. Knights move toward Berlin and SW's move toward Munich. One of our galleys positions itself to make a suicide run to the east.
780AD 2 pikemen in Munich defend themselves well killing 3 SW's before we capture that city. The battle for Berlin is just as ferocious as 2 German Pikemen wound 7 knights before they are killed and the final spearman defending Berlin manages to kill a knight before being put to the sword. We capture Berlin and destroy the Fragile Germans. The brave captain of a galley manages to cross the ocean and end in seas with a red border insight :D
790AD We make contact with Babylon.
800AD The GL Cheops finally gets to rebuild the Palace. He builds it in Berlin.
810AD We meet Shaka. Like Hammy he wants an arm & leg for WM. Instead we trade him Invention for Education.
820AD Meet the Chinese. Trade Mao gems for contact with Rome + music theory.
Ceasar gives us contact with Americans + his TM for gems
Give Mao spices for his TM + contact with Greeks.
We trade Greece Contact with aztec, persia, & russia + 175 gold for banking.
(I) We learn Metallurgy & start on MT.
France starts building Smith's & Magellan's.
When I bought embassy in China, I saw Beijing was building Magellan's.
830AD Our elite knight blunders into a SW and we get the GL Khufu :crazyeye:
I make the diplo rounds and end up with the following trades:
Gems + Spices + Chemistry +290 gold & contact with russians to Babylon for Economicis + silks + incense + WM.
Chem + spices + comm with russia to Greece for navigation.
We declare War on Aztec's. We easily crush Xochicaleo the remaining Aztec city.

But we have not destroyed them :( they must have a settler somewhere
(I) We build Smith's -- mini cascade to Magellan's
840AD Troop & worker movement
(I) An Aztec Galley shows up [dance]
850AD more Troop & worker movement.

And so my reign ends.

I did not do diplo this turn. And there are a few embassies to be bought.

I left 1 unit active, it is close to where the Aztec galley is. I rush built a ship in the town with the active unit. Also, the Aztec have a town on an island to the west of Persia. In our town that is building the ship there is a Knight, a shadow warrior, a settler, a musketman. Also, a shadow warrior is within walking distance of the town.

At the moment most of our cities are building banks. Feel free to change that.

It appears that Berlin and Munich get attached every turn by a SW or 2. I have started to run knights around those 2 towns and occasionally I will hit a SW.

Here it is: Secret War

@ Killer : Can you help running this SG for the next two weeks? I will be away beginning tomorrow and be back on 10/8. So, like K2, I will have to skip about 2 turns.

Hey guys.. so how's it going ?? well i have decided that if you will let me, i would like to continue playing on a limited basis. I should be able to catch my turns in a timely fashion, unless my turns come up on a Wensday, Thursday or a Sunday. Those are the days i have no net access at all. So if my turn were to come up then you could just go and skip over me :) .. well im going home now.. long day at work. I will check back Monday before i have to work again.
