Minimo only runs on Windows Mobile 4.3 and newer.

(Believe me, I have been through hell and back trying to locate a browser other than IE that runs on WinCE 2.11. It doesn't exist. The closest I ever got to having a decent browser on that computer was when I installed NetBSD, but NetBSD didn't correctly recognize my wireless card.)

I read this part and thought it might work ....

"If you do not have a Windows desktop, you can download the CAB installer. This you simply need to copy or download to your device. Then use Start -> File Explorer on your Window CE device to locate and run the CAB installer."

I'm using it on a Axim X50 and it works great. Much better than the IE version. But if it doesn't work it doesn't work. Bummer huh?
 
And the Axim X50 runs Windows Mobile 2003, which is supported by Minimo. My device (a NEC MobilePro 780) runs Windows CE 2.11, which is not supported by Minimo. In fact, I even tried it a while ago before I gave up searching for a web browser for that machine... the CAB installer worked, but the program didn't run (gave a "This is not a Windows CE application" error).

well I did a quick look around and found a few entries that said they can no longer be upgraded as the parts are no longer be made. No saying they are not out there, just no longer made. So that upgrade might be to a new fancy smancy PDA ... that NEC kind of looks like a PDA-asuars no offence. I like my Axim pretty well and the prices have really dropped on them. Slide in a 1 gig card and run all kinds of stuff, I use mine more for GPS than anything.
 
Yeah, I know this is a PDAosaurus. :) It was new in 1999... Right now, though, it's the only Internet access I have from my apartment, because my desktop computer is on the other side of the country. (I'm in Oklahoma, the computer is in Maryland)

Of what I could find, it appears that NEC had planned for it to be upgradable, but never got around to producing upgrades for it. I have a 2GB card that I used to install NetBSD, but it isn't particularly useful because my wireless card isn't supported (It's a Proxim Orinoco Silver 802.11b card), so I can't access the Internet using NetBSD. If it weren't for that problem, this machine would actually be running a decent OS with decent software.
 
Yep I didn't see anything in the way of upgrades. Ever think about a laptop? I guess I'm spoiled but I have too many computers, PDA's and electronic toys. Fact is I don't need about half of them perhaps more than that. The Axim has a built in wireless and bluetooth which is sweet. I just ordered a buddy a refrubed Dell Laptop that had all the toys on it, 17" screen, 256 video, 2Gb Ram and 120G HDD amoungst other stuff. We got it on the outlet site for under $1500 ... if that's to pricey I saw many that would run CIV easily for as little as $600 and that's pretty cheap for a factory Laptop. Anyway good luck with it.

Anyway Macs are good I have a couple of older ones, mostly Windows here with the exception of a Linux box. All work computers and office stuff are MS so you have to conform in order to keep files and docs easy to move around. Hate it but I'm out numbered and it's my money paying for it ... LOL go figure.
I like the Dells and Sony's in Winders if you go with that I haven't researched the Mac lately so I'm no help there. I'm on a Dell 9400 right now, like it pretty well ... get freakin warm but don't they all? I plug it into a 62" DLP TV and play Civ in actual size.
 
Yeah, I think this thread has strayed somewhat.

Part of the reason I wasn't completely sure about getting the Macbook was I haven't yet looked into Linux support for it... I'd probably stick with OSX, but I'd like to have some room to experiment with Linux on it. Also, I'll have to look into whether Conquests will run in Parallels, if I decide to buy it - I don't think Boot Camp will be an acceptable solution, since in that case, it'd be just as convenient to reboot my desktop machine into Windows.

Really, the absolute easiest way to set up a multiboot comp is with seperate hard drives for each OS, using GRUB as your bootloader (since it's so much easier to set up). Using multiple hard drives isn't absolutely necessary, of course, but saves you the hassle of worrying about getting everything installed in the right order, & etc.
 
I say go buy you a laptop, Mac, Dell, Sony something and be done with it.
 
Well I was out of the loop for a while... catching up...

Ok I have decided to make my new system a high end gaming rig with only XP because...

I spent all this morning putting together a better system for school/work/etc. It is an old Dell Optiplex and I got WFW 3.11 to work on it with high speed Internet!

As far as Firefox goes, what's so great about that program anyway? I try only to use Microsoft software. Right now I have Internet Explorer 5.0 and pages load in the blink of an eye. If I want to browse even faster w/o most images and formatting and such I switch to version 2.0, which I also have on this machine.

Now as soon as I can update the video to 16-bit with 800x600 and add a good sound card to this system I should be in great shape. I can't find any drivers for the on-board sound.
 
The main thing is to be able to run CIVIV on the "new new" system.

Then on this other "new" system (that's only one new), I can get Office 4.3 and do all my college reports and stuff on the retro computer.

But I have to say in all honesty, this Pentium II 450-MC running WFW3.11 is faster than my Pentium 4 3000-MC running XP. Clock speed means nothing, it's WAIT time.

It doesn't have more holes in it than swiss cheese, and is far more customizeable and flexible?

Though Opera is better still.
 
Well my friend came over to help me out as I was having some trouble. Turns out I didn't need the IDE controller card, SATA works just fine. Oh, and we did get dual-booting with DOS/XP to work, so I'm happy!

Approximate OS load times on a Pentium D, 2.87GHz...

Windows XP: About one minute (I haven't installed much yet)
Windows 3.11: Faster than you can blink!
 
Too bad that Win 3.11 is next to useless. ;)
