Why is the AI so stupid in military situations? I don't have to worry about anyone invading me, it doesn't matter who i'm at war with, I can be at war with every overseas computer and I'll come out virtually unscaved. Why? because the AI is to stupid to launch an effective overseas invasion against me. They'll occasionally bombard my cities with a few air/sea units but they can't invade me.

They usually just send ships and transports in tiny stacks which is 2-4 AEGIS cruisers and 1-2 Transports, which, are then landed in the worst possible spots and easily destroyed, that or destroyed at sea by my airforce. This is odd because these computer players have much more military strength than me. For example the Aztec computer im currently at war with has about a 2x bigger navy, 2x bigger airforce and 5x bigger ground force and has not sent even a remotely challenging force on my homeland and he's completely devoid of common sense and effective tactics.

The biggest landing force he sent at me consisted of about 15 Modern armor all of which were stacked and easily destroyed by my army. Every 2 turns or so he'll land a whopping 4-8 stacked mech infantry to be owned.

I wouldn't complain so much if the computer had even the least bit of strategic thinking when it comes to invading me. I've been at war with him for about 20 agonizingly boring turns.

Am I doing something wrong here? the difficulty is set at "Emperor" if i set it higher will the computer actually have some challenging military tactics to throw at me and not simply land weak stacked forces in the strongest parts of my country? Also I know that putting it at "Sid" will make his units stronger what I want is some challenging AI tactics to be faced with. Any help is appreciated.

Its biggest military weakness is overseas invasions. Try playing Pangaea maps instead.

On higher difficulty levels the AI units do NOT get a any bonuses. They will have a lot more of them however. Tactically, the AIs play the same at all levels.

So basically the entire aspect of naval warfare, continental land masses, and amphibious game play ceise to be if you want half a challenge? argh that's weak. I find Pangea maps boring cause it's all land warfare and all the land units are pretty much the same (besides artillery) and it doesnt take much skill. It usually only amounts massing modern armor and trying to out-maneuver your enemy. I'll probably just play user made scenarios from now on.Thanks for your help anyways.

You could also try to play with some self-imposed restrictions. For example, build no wonders, never build any armor, or "babysit" a civ and defend them at all costs. You'll have a greater satisfaction of winning if you do so in a challenging way.

I never use nukes, that kinda ruins the whole "strategy" thing. I also tried self-imposed rules/restrictions and setting limits on the way I play, didn't like it, found it rather pointless. Another good Family Guy line is this:

Meg - "Oh geez mom how ironic"
Peter - "Now meg, don't talk that way about your mother, she is not an irawn"

Well, then I see your move to player made mods as a good decision. Keep in mind, however, a modded map's AI is no different than a normal AI.

That's a good line too, by the way! :)

riley: If you find Emperor so easy you should try deity at least it is quite a bit harder. Play continents if you don't like pangaea, or try archipelago when your starting island is a bit pathetic.

I would agree more with your argument about pangaea warfare if you substituted cavalry for modern armor.

If you don't want to play variants that is fine, but you are missing out. At the very least I would restrict myself from moves that are very abusive of the AI(abusing game glitches). Personally, I play pretty close to the standard successon game rules(see for example any LK succesion game).

I never abuse game glitches. Thanks for the help I will definetly follow these tips. The only thing I hate restricting myself on is skill itself, by "taking it easy" on the computer. Also Bingen, about continents, The reason I hate them is because the computer is unable to be the least bit effective in war. I won't abuse glitches but I will try different variants.

If you want a challenge, why don't you invade their island, instead? Since they are much stronger than you, I'm sure they will put up a really good fight depending their homeland.

Try playing always war. :) The tactics won't improve, but you'll still have more invasions than you can handle. And as Moonsinger said, establishing, holding and moving out from a late-game beachhead on a high level is ... interesting. :)
