Dynamic Civilization Naming - Submit Names Here!

OK, I am going to try this rather than just lecture other people about how I think they should try it.

This is based on the principle that the names should be as simple and constant as possible, even if they are not strictly historical. They will all be "Empires" - no fancy "Caliphates" or "Mandates" here, change the name yourself if you want :p However, certain names should change if they would be totally inconsistent with their era. So I'm choosing names by era.

Egyptian, Indian, Chinese, Greek, Japanese, Ethiopian, Spanish, French, English, Russian, Dutch, Malinese, Portuguese, Mongolian, American Empires are OK in every era. I would change English Empire to British Empire though.

Babylonian Empire (Babylon) changes to Iraqi Empire (Iraq) in Renaissance Era.
Persian Empire (Persia) changes to Iranian Empire (Iran) in Modern Era.
Carthaginian Empire (Carthage) changes to Berber Empire (Berbers) in Renaissance Era.
Roman Empire (Rome) changes to Italian Empire (Italy) in Renaissance Era.
Mayan Empire (Maya) changes to Guatemalan Empire (Guatemala) in Industrial Era.
Viking Empire (Vikings) begins as Scandinavian Empire (Scandinavia). This changes to Norwegian Empire (Norway) in Renaissance Era.
Arabian Empire (Arabia) changes to Saudi Empire (Saudi Arabia) in Modern Era.
Khmer Empire (Khmer) changes to Cambodian Empire (Cambodia) in Industrial Era.
German Empire (Germany) begins as Holy Roman Empire (The Empire). This changes to German Empire (Germany) in Industrial Era.
Incan Empire (Inca) changes to Peruvian Empire (Peru) in Industrial Era.
Aztec Empire (Aztec) changes to Mexican Empire (Mexico) in Industrial Era.
Turkish Empire (Turkey) begins as the Ottoman Empire (Ottomans). This changes to Turkish Empire (Turkey) in Modern Era.

There are problems here - I assume there is a good reason why the Turks are not called Ottomans anyway, like in Civ 4. The Berbers are already represented by waves of Camel Archers in North Africa. And Germany is not strictly the Holy Roman Empire (though the noun is a big improvement on Holy Rome). Still, it's a start.

Viking Empire (Vikings) begins as Scandinavian Empire (Scandinavia). This changes to Norwegian Empire (Norway) in Renaissance Era.

Norwegian? Not Sweden? :/ I would like to see Viking Empire -> Swedish Empire.

Turkish Empire (Turkey) begins as the Ottoman Empire (Ottomans). This changes to Turkish Empire (Turkey) in Modern Era.

From Wikipedia: "The Ottoman Empire (...) also known as the Turkish Empire or Turkey"= so Turkey is OK in every era.

Babylonian Empire (Babylon) changes to Iraqi Empire (Iraq) in Renaissance Era.
Carthaginian Empire (Carthage) changes to Berber Empire (Berbers) in Renaissance Era.
Roman Empire (Rome) changes to Italian Empire (Italy) in Renaissance Era.
Mayan Empire (Maya) changes to Guatemalan Empire (Guatemala) in Industrial Era.
Incan Empire (Inca) changes to Peruvian Empire (Peru) in Industrial Era.
Aztec Empire (Aztec) changes to Mexican Empire (Mexico) in Industrial Era.

Above empires should change names after respawn, not in XYZ Era.

Norwegian? Not Sweden? :/ I would like to see Viking Empire -> Swedish Empire.
Well, I believe their capital is in Norway.

From Wikipedia: "The Ottoman Empire (...) also known as the Turkish Empire or Turkey"= so Turkey is OK in every era.
While Turkey was used, Ottoman Empire is the common usage (though it may not have been as common during that period).

^^

Yeah, but Union of Kalmar, Sweden or Denmark would be much more appropriate. Norway was a vassal of Denmark, and then Denmark inherited Norway(IIRC). Denmark and Sweden have been bigger powers in Scandinavia than Norway, though Union of Kalmar would be the best.

If there would be Sweden as a new nation Vikings should be renamed in Renaissance era to Denmark. In other case Sweden was most significant power in Scandinavia (most powerful army in the World!) so there should be Sweden.

[EDIT]:
While Turkey was used, Ottoman Empire is the common usage (though it may not have been as common during that period).

Let's not play with names. England/Britain is better than The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Britain, UK.

I'm so glad Rhye's is taking this over and endorsing it. Otherwise I don't think we could ever do anything with all the different ideas and opinions.

What is wrong with the term Ottoman Empire?
From my experiance it is at least as common as Turkey when refering to that period of history, if not more common.
It is short and simple unlike your comparison.

The problem with Kalmar, Denmark and names like those is that Denmark often belongs to Germans or Dutch rather than Vikings, in my games anyway. The behaviour of the Vikings AI is much more similar to that of Norway (colonising Scotland, Iceland, etc) rather than Sweden (colonising Novgorod, campaigning around the Baltic Sea, etc). Also, the capital is in Norway. Perhaps Scandinavia is better.

Certainly the Ottoman Empire was called Turkey or the Turkish Empire when it existed, however nowadays it's almost always called the Ottoman Empire (in the English-speaking world at least) to differentiate between the two different states of the old Sultanate and the new Republic. "Turkish Empire" seems quite an archaic term when used these days. Wikipedia != truth.

The advantages of renaming by era rather than respawn are
a) there is a guaranteed change to the appropriate name in the appropriate historical period, and
b) it would probably be easier to code one system rather than two.

What is wrong with the term Ottoman Empire?

Turkey is refers to whole history, Ottoman Empire only to best part. Ottoman Empire is probably most popular name if someone wants to say "Turkey before IWW". However, I don't like to see Ming, Roman Republic, Ottoman Empire, etc.

there is a guaranteed change to the appropriate name in the appropriate historical period,

Period- not situation. I agreed that some civs should rename in certain era.

it would probably be easier to code one system rather than two.

MEGA BUMP :P

I think the names already included in Rhye's are great now, so this thread doesn't really need to be resurrected.

Haha indeed. This has been a feature of Rhye's for quite some time now. :D
