Maybe a lot of culture huts and thus the Liberty Great Person? (although that's a bit far-fetched).

would they have popped the free GG from honor for a golden age production bonus while working 6+ mines in starvation? that would be like mp quality strategy. i wish i had saved that game so i could find out.

A lot of it depends on the map size. The smaller the map, the fewer the civs there are to beat you to wonders. I usually play on Tiny map (4 civs) cos my computer was made in the stone age. Last game I played I got all the wonders I wanted (i.e. Oracle, Porcelain Tower, Hagia Sophia and a couple of others).

Having said that, getting the Hanging Gardens seems nigh-on impossible.

It is possible if you go straight to mathematics and don't expand (because you skip luxury techs thats the problem with wonders in this game
