In this video of a partial game play, one of the devs explains that during the early game in Civ 6, all empires have open borders by default. You can't close your borders until after you've researched a specific Civic.

Okay, that's fine. We knew about this before, and I believe it's a good change. It makes sense historically and should make game play more interesting.

However — I think borders being shown as solid when open and dashed when closed is totally backwards. That seems intuitively wrong to me. Shouldn't it be the opposite??

I thought it was the opposite

I don't think so. If you look at the video I linked, Japan's borders are shown as solid, yet another player (Aztecs) can freely enter their territory.

The borders were not implemented until few weeks after the build was made. This is before the civ color pass as well. This is before the actual borders style were adjusted.

Ah, okay. If true, that's a big relief. Now if I can just see an example that shows borders drawn in the appropriate way I'll feel a million times better.

I like this concept but I think the civic that gives each nation borders (Early Empire) comes way, way, too early.

Open borders early makes sense and is probably going to be a good change, but man is that going to annoy me. :)

It doesn't look that early - it's 3rd tier. If you didn't invest in culture, you may live without it for significant time. Especially on Normal+ speed.

It's the second choice if you go with Foreign Trade first

Given the abundance of Continents, you'll get the boost for Foreign Trade rather quickly.

Its' actualyl very early.

I discount Code of Laws as that isn't a choice.

You mean you could beeline to it. Yes, you could, but I doubt you would in most of tha games. You'll not get Eureka for Early Empire that easily and there are other civics to work with.

Anyway, we'll see after the game launch.

You don't have that many options and getting the Eureka for Early Empire isn't that hard, you'll just need two cities with 3 pop each or three cities with 2 pop each.

But yes, we'll see.

This 100 %. I was extremely excited about this feature, and then it turns out being completely useless because it comes so early. One of the first things I'm going to try to mod is move this to much later.

Quick players...

It would be turn 100 perhaps in a marathon game. Playing quick passes things quick, like making an army on quick and arriving to get eaten by the next generation, because the other guy teched up, etc.

K, let's disregard both Quick, Epic and Marathon speeds.

It will still come rather early in Normal speed.

It's the SECOND available civic if you go with Foreign Trade, which is the FIRST option you get along with Craftmanship.

I definitely agree. Maybe playing on standard speed will make it not seem too early, but I think closing your borders should come with Political Philosophy when you get the first "real" governments. Prior to that, you should still have the option of enforcing your borders by telling other civs and CS not to enter your territory. They can not listen to you and you can smack them in the head with some clubs and slingshots without penalty until they respect your lines in the sand

Under the new border rules, will your units still get thrown out of a rival civ's territory upon declaring war?
