early tech paths

Well, what do you mean by best? What do you look for, what's your end-goal etc...?

Anything but Pottery. Clay is gay!

But no, seriously. Your early tech path should be determined by what kind of starting position you are dealt and the starting tech/traits/UU/UB of your leader. Got a starting pos with two seafood resources? Fishing is a pretty safe bet if you didn't already start with it. Got stone and an industrious leader? Well, you better get masonry/wheel early then and try to hook up a couple of early wonders. Got lots of wood and a close neighbour? Well, bronze working ASAP would be a no-brainer then. So on and so forth. As you become more experienced, it'll get easier to determine your needs. As it is, the answer to your question is the kinda boring "it depends". Bronze working and techs to improve your nearby land are never wrong though...

Best is relative and circumstantial, but I think a beeline for Bronze Working followed by worker techs is generally considered a powerful move.

Archery for a protective leader is cool on any level.
