Economic side of Civ5

What I'm concerned of is that Civ5 is starting to resemble and TBS warfare simulator.
What I really missed when playing Civ4 was the absense of ways to manipulate strategic situations by economic means and that almost every time game was resorted to a mass assault to enemy.

So what I really hope is that there would be more economic features included and a decent economic engine. So that developing a city and it's surrounding would not only result a big city but also give options to hold the city growth to certain level and instead create a tradeing city.

For example: I decide to create a community near fertile banks of a large river. Rather that having it growing into a metropolis with massive health and squalor problem I rather put an hold to the city's growth and decide to sell the grain to nearby cities for commodities and in future make the city a manufactoring city so it would be used to sell mass quantites of goods to other states and cities.

Also it would be great if I have the chance to manipulate other(weaker) states to more advanced ones. Like supply food to them or create artificial famines in countries and for that generate revenue.

And last but not least economic victory option. Be the most industrilised country in the world and be able to produce mass quantities of goods.

My aim is to have a game for more economic or slow paced players, so that we don't have to resort to warmongering to almost every game.

I'm deeply sorry if this thread is discussed somewhere else already.

I agree. I've been playing Civ 4 quite a bit lately and I've always wanted to play as a trade empire. Maybe monopolize a particular resource by either gathering it myself, or by buying it up from other nations. I'd like to develop a civilization which succeeds due to it's control of a particular resource, like the silk road, or the fur trade in North America. I'm playing Vanilla Civ 4 so I'm not sure how the corporations function in the expansion packs but I don't believe they allow a civilization to dominate based on control of resources. I could be wrong.

It might be a bit early to start worrying about the Economy. we don't even know anything about it yet.

An economic victory might be nice ;). It would be interesting to balance, though. They had a psuedo-economic victory in the BtS scenario "Crossroads of the world" but it was based on gold only. Your commerce vs. rival commerce would probably be a factor in a victory for every game but you would probably need x gold too.
