Editing the mini map

Here's what I want to do... I want to edit the mini map ( the one in the corner showing the entire world map) so that it does not show culural borders on water squares. I find its hard to make out the land masses, especially small island because the the culural colors block them out. Can anyone give me any pointers on how to do this?

I wish I could minimize or eliminate the minimap so as to speed up the graphics

You can actually press <CTRL> + I to remove the minimap; it also removes the frames around the bottombar to increase screen space.

I am well aware of the ctrl-I and alt-I options and am not too happy about this all or nothing option.
