Elder Scrolls V: Oblivion Part 2?

You may have a point here as when you start to think what exactly can be dumbed down compared to Oblivion, it isn't easy to find those things. Recycling dungeons? Were recycled already. Simplified and recycled dialogue? Was simple and recycled already. Even simpler and shorter main story? I don't think so. Smaller number of side quests? This may be the thing as there were quite a lot of side quests in Oblivion (the quality wasn't great IMO). The number of side quests in Skyrim isn't revealed yet I think? They have hyped about the "radiant story"-system, but what if it's in reality some kind of glorified way to recycle side quests?

But you may be right, it's quite likely that those who liked Oblivion will like this product too. On the other, for those who didn't like Oblivion, there aren't yet much reason to expect this would be better.

You understood me quite well.

It might be fairer to say that those that like the last couple of Fallout games will like Skyrim, as that is what I see being referenced the most by developers.

I'm glad I liked both Oblivion and Morrowind. Found Oblivion first, though, which might have something to do with it.

What weapon is that woman carrying on her right side anyway? All I see is a handle looking thing, maybe a mace or a staff.

It's a man wearing a codpiece.

What was revealed recently is not exactly endearing me to the game. A developer flat out said in an interview that it's being developed for consoles and then ported to PC. I can't think of a single example where this pattern produced a superior product for the PC and I can think of many where it produced a far worse and, very occasionally, almost unplayable game. Everything I'm hearing about skills being removed, stats being "streamlined", developing for consoles first etc. is warning me not to rush out and buy this day 1. I got burned on that with Oblivion and I feel confident that I can resist the pretty fire this time.

The setting is so different in those games that the fanbase probably isn't exactly the same. Not all of those who like post-apocalyptic future scenarios could care about medieval style high fantasy settings and vice versa.

Well, when it was announced back in December, I said I'd buy it even if it was Oblivion 1.5... And now that I know that it's at least Oblivion 1.6, it's definitely a day 1 buy for me :)

EDIT:

Yeah... I myself found it shocking (to find out, there are people who like one, but not another), but it is so...

If it's more like the recent Fallouts than Oblivion, then that's an improvement, but still not enough for me. I enjoyed Fallout 3 and really liked New Vegas, however, I like the lore and universe in Fallout a lot more than TES, so that helps. Taken out of the Fallout universe, I'm not convinced I would have played FO3 for long. Sparse quests, mostly repetitive exploration (some non quest buildings were unique but most weren't), average (at best) writing, etc. I love Fallout so I enjoyed it but if they had replaced the Fallout stuff and called it an original IP I probably would have played it for 20-30 hours then got bored and never played it again. New Vegas was a lot better but that wasn't because of Bethesda, it was better because the writing and storytelling were much higher quality, that was all Obsidian, so it doesn't count.

I was commenting on the idea of the game being dumbed down. If you think Fallout is a dumbed down version of Oblivion, than I guess we just disagree. I don't think Fallout NV was very dumbed down IMO.

I think a lot of fears are really irrational at this point. We've barely scratched the surface on what the actual game is going to be like.

Again though please remember that NV is mostly not Bethesda, it was a different company. If you want to speculate on Skyrim via Fallout, you better use Fallout 3, since it's the one that Bethesda actually made.

I just won't compare it to anything than. Because we barely know anything about how the final product is going to turn out.

No, no, he wasn't saying that...

However, Fallout 3 and NV were dumbed down versions of Fallout 1 and 2. Never actually played them, but they sure as hell mention it in Spoiler Warning a lot.

I think the fan interview that was announced (about) a month ago should be coming out soon.

Hmm... dumbed down, I'm not sure about. They are completely different styles of games, it would be like saying Halo is a dumbed down version of Deus Ex. They are both first person and involve firing guns at enemies but that's where the similarities end. NV and especially FO3 were not up to the quality standards of 1 and 2 in terms of writing and number of quests and immersion in the world but I can't say that they are are "dumbed down" in the same way that Oblivion is dumbed down from Morrowind. In Morrowind you'd get NPC's giving you two paragraphs of directions on how to get where they want you to go, and sometimes it was still hard to find, so when you finally did you felt like a total badass, the king of finding ****. In Oblivion it's like "Please find my amulet. It's north of town... somewhere... I think." and then you follow the built in homing beacon to get to it, so when you find it you think "Well, that was totally expected, next." Hopefully Skyrim will steer away from that lameness but what we're hearing about "accessibility" is not exactly making me brim with hope.

Ok, Oblivion fetch quests had one thing going for them.

No ****ing Cliff Racers.

Ah lol I never minded cliff racers, probably because I usually had marksmanship as a backup weapon skill on almost every character and would just whip out a crossbow to shoot the beasts down. Plus, racer plumes, great alchemy ingredient for making levitate potions!

When I had Archery as my main way of dealing damage, they still pissed me off. It's fudgingg expensive, when you get right down to it, especially because they move in 26 directions instead of 8.

Also, I never needed alchemy crap. I got a ring from a Televani lord that let me levitate, in addition to a spell that was slow and crappy but let me not die if I was high in the air and my ring ran out.

I know, I have one.

Still, it doesn't mean I never fought them. Something as annoying as Cliff Racers never should have been put in the game, or at least made them more rare or easy to fight.

It's just their silent from-the-top approach then sudden SKREEEEE. Aaaaagh.

"hmmm, where am I? let me check my map... um... oh... Wait is this a sign? I don't think I've been here before. Where the heck is this cave's entrance... let's walk a bit there... Hmm, I think I see bandits in the distance, better be car" SKREEEEEEEE SKREEEEEE *banging noises*
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
