Hi there

Was wondering if any of the hardcore players could advise this returning player ;) on the best opening strategy for Elizabeth on the above modded huge map. My nearest civs are
France, Alexander, Caesar.

I am playing on epic and have a dream of fleets of Ships of the line dominating the high seas lol. I have 15 civs and the max CS avail. I have evened out the random civs so every continent has an even spread :) Every one is in their true starting position on the Earth map :)

If you were playing in the above scenario and can be bothered could you outline your targets for the early game, tech, builds and SPs. Also what direction you would take :)

Cheers

Alex

Hi dogmeister,

I'm sorry, but I don't understand your acronyms. Can you clarify what they stand for, as well as explain how your map is modded?

Elizabeth has the UA of fast movement over the ocean, so it's in your best interest to expand this ability to create a super-navy. I would build the great lighthouse as well as take the commerce policy Naval Tradition. A medium sized navy composed of ships that have +3 movement is the same as a large navy.

Each start depends on the starting conditions. I usually execute the national-college start followed by a swordsman or longswordsman rush. This means building a scout, a monument, a worker, a library, another building or unit of your choice, and then national college. If you are isolated on small islands, you can forgo the rush and concentrate on building an economic empire. Make sure to explore as much as you can.

Plan your city placements ahead. If you start building coastal cities and you want to build ships, make sure they have some production tiles available. If you just want a capital coastal city, make sure the other cities have good science and culture to make up for your capital investment in ship building.

Ships are very important for long-distance invasions, but become less effective once flight comes around. Ship of the Line is an awesome unit - stronger, cheaper, and sees further than a frigate. Try to rifle/cannon rush, build a fleet of ships of the line. Use the SotL to clear a landing hole on the coast, then fan out to kill all units within range.

The more details you give us, the better info we can give you. So what kind of map are you playing?

If I understand correctly, YAGEM is referring to Yet Another Giant Earth Mod? Which I think is a super huge earth map with civs & city states in their respective starting positions?

I'm not familiar with the map, so I can't give specific advice. England's height matches that of their real-world example, their peerless navy. Ships of the Line are fast and powerful and can perform siege, which makes England very dangerous against coastal cities. Since the map you're on is a giant sized map, I would steer away from lengthy incursions inland, and instead do just what the English did in real life and colonize the world. Beeline to Astronomy and save a Great Scientist to bulb Navigation.

I would focus on settling lots of coastal cities, and set them to gold focus. Try to claim resources you can sell on the market to pay for your harbors & seaports and most of all your Navy. If France or Germany have settled juicy coastal cities on the European mainland, you'll be well suited to take them out with Ships of the Line strafing the cities and then using a powerful melee unit like a Longswordsman to claim cities. You'll want to be wary of attacking from sea, however, unless you can give a few of your units the amphibious promotion.
