Embassy to mavericks

Sent greeting to DMOC via pm:
Honorable DMOC, and your fellow Mavericks, I am pleased to announce that our two teams have made contact.
Knowing that another civilized group of people exists in the world is a great reassurance to the members of the Continuum, as I presume it is among the Mavericks.
We also wish to maintain a long and fruitful peace, as our two great nations are much better suited to trading and co-operation then attempting to annihilate each other.

Best wishes,
The Continuum of Quatronia

Very good, but for future reference, we need to have the diplomatic notes up for discussions before we submit.

Good one though.

best regards

P

We should probably send them our actual email account; if they have something similar for their team that's what we'd hope to hear back on in their first/second message.

Anyway, we need to keep up with what they are thinking over the next few days, much like we need to be on the ball with what we send to CDZ.

In particular:
-Mavericks are going to know we have contact with another team, because of Espionage Points. We need to decide how to explain this - did our current workboat somehow sail all the way around (make them believe we have one workboat) or admit we are closer to them.
-For that matter, they might have contact with the next team around the bend themselves, and may not be able to hide it from us either. In fact, I think this is likely - they sent no workboat our way, and probably at least one of the two teams (them or the next team) did get a workboat, and enough time has passed for them to find each other.
-We could also talk about tech, religions and wonders in particular. Since we have Stonehenge and Buddhism, and they have Hinduism, and could feasibly get the Oracle or something, it plays into long term planning.

But after a response for them a good "official" opening message I think could talk about religion/stonehenge rather easily, and if they are curious to pursue the contact/diplomacy situation.

Will note for next time.
Anyway, I just sent their email address, I just neglected to send our email to them last time:
Apologies, I neglected to send you our email address.
Any future discussions can be sent to quatronia10@gmail.com
Best Wishes from the Continuum
Also, discuss the option of a non-aggression treaty with Mavericks here.
Also, I need access to the email address, the password would be appreciated.

Oh, I think Provo might have posted/sent that out initially, but yeah, in case anyone forgot, we can always find a stickied spot or keep sending people passwords.

Is Mavericks' team email account accurate then? Do they have it on the main MTDG II forum?

Game discussion and strategy I'm sure is ongoing. Anyway, I'm sure you'll do a great job working with the Mavericks here and there is a lot the whole team will coordinate too.

Well, mavericks sent us a full diplomatic message this morning, just checked, anyway posting it here for all to see.

Greetings to the People of the Continuum of Quatronia,

We welcome meeting new civilizations and people, especially peaceful and educated explorers of the seas.

Our leaders propose a great peace treaty between our nations so we may build and advance our knowledge under stable and predictable conditions. We welcome your thoughts and ideas to build a mutually beneficial agreement that will allow our great nations to prosper.

The people of Maverick admire your exploring spirit, they envy your knowledge of the world - will your share some of details of your journey? Our people are most intrigued about your Continuum homeland and curious of your people, we look forward to exchanging information and ideas. Relating to that, are you interested in coordinating our research from now on? If we can agree on some technologies you and we research and share it could become a great benefit for both our nations.

We would also like to congratulate you on your construction of Stonehenge, a wise choice for a charismatic leader such as Hannibal.

Should you opt to reply to our team, please etch your response in a stone tablet, and tell your messenger to deliver it to us at team.mavericks.civfanatics@gmail.com, the holy email address bequeathed unto us by the holy Hindu gods.

Best Regards,

Team Mavericks

PS: In what way would you like your civilization to be addressed? "The Continuum," "Quatronia," or any other method? We would just like to call you by the proper name you request.

I think our next response/envoy could do well to mention that Non-Aggression Pact we seem to have voted on mostly in agreement. And by the time the next turn or two rolls over, via espionage points we will probably see if they have contact with other civilizations. Or more importantly, they will see automatically that WE do have another contact, no point hiding that.

Giving them a picture of the map or what we've explored may or may not be the call we make. We could basically mislead them on where our workboat came from/where we met another civ or what, it really depends.

I suggest describing the coastline of the mainland, and that we're on an island- it will probably just confirm what they already know. We should tell them we're close by seeing as they'll find out soon enough anyways.

Yeah, we could confirm we're on an island, they probably have guessed that, doubly so if they have contact with anyone else (and as we have contact with another team, and know it's a norm, something to be figured out easily).

Telling them we are close by is a trap if we're not willing to say exactly how far, and I'm not sure we want to do that. Not directly lying about ourselves or a third team, sure, we can avoid that, but I wouldn't reveal exactly where we or CDZ are located. It's possible India has done very, very little scouting or something, they might have just built their second city and a wonder and no/maybe a single ship, and we don't want to give too much away. And if they did scout, they haven't come our way at all and won't for another dozen turns or more, that info is valuable.

Things to address/discuss for next email:

1. Offer a 50-turn Non-Aggression Treaty, effective immediately.
2. Thank them for our congratulations about Stonehenge.
3. Congratulate them about Hinduism
4. Discuss the possibilities of trade, mention that we have wheat and silver to trade.
5. Here's the sticky subject: revealing our explorations.
My Suggestions:
- Describe vaguely the median coastline
- Mention our contact with another team, as they will find out that soon, so it is best to help gain their trust by readily admitting to knowing another team.
- Do not mention that that team is CDZ, the median coastline between us and CDZ, the direction of CDZ, or the fact that CDZ will meet them soon.
6. How should we be addressed? :dunno:

Also recieved a reply by PM from DMOC:
Thanks for the message. We are composing a response right now and hope to deliver it by June 9th.

All of those points sound good, not sure what the "median" is though, probably too many terms floating around. Definitely they don't need to particularly know anything about CDZ. We could round up the NAP to turn 100 if we feel like it actually, that sounds nice and simple, but everything there I'd be ready to sign onboard to.

I think we'd be called either Quatronia, or the Q - either is fine. We're probably not the "Continuum" though, that's just our city name. Though if the team feels otherwise, that's perfectly fine.

Well, we do like to call the team "the Continuum".
I think I just confused the poor Mavericks by using both.
By median I just mean the coastline on the main continent in between us and other teams.

Yeah, we can describe the median/coastline of that petal as a desert peninsula we came around, and then for further details only vaguely on where our city/the other team we met are exactly. Again if everybody does like calling themselves the Continuum that's fine, I've used it before too, I guess we make a team call, or let Mavericks do what they want (cause really I don't think they'd offend us if they kept calling us any of those names).

Again, definitely want to get back in this next message about knowing another team though - if we don't do that it would be a barrier to trust (even if we don't plan to have them as allies in the end, can't close doors now). I'd also say, perhaps importantly - if they send another message or PM, don't respond with anything substantial, just wait for our full response to this one, which hopefully is less than a day anyway if we get a message we're all happy with. Eg. if they send another PM "Hey, you guys have contact with someone" best not to answer that informally, but I know you'll be fine.

I'm not picky about the name either, and I don't think anyone else here is.
I'm going to draft up a response soon, hopefully we can have it revised by the team and sent by tomorrow.

Drafted up the letter. Ignored #2, seemed pointless.
I'm still not sure about how much to reveal, but I think this is a good amount.
Greetings Mavericks,

We appreciate the fact that you made such a quick reply to our original private message using e-mail.

We also have a proposition to make:
A 50 turn Non-Aggression Pact, effective immediately. We would set an example for the whole world, putting aside our religious and cultural differences to form a thriving alliance.

Trading should be an option soon, as we have reason to believe that you also started beside health and luxury resources. Hopefully we can soon give each other our spares of those resources for the good of us all.

You requested information about this puzzling world, and for the sake of friendship, we are providing.
Our exploring ship, the Ganges, passed through many savage lands on the way to your fair territory, which was the only civilized land we have found. These "savage lands" are part of what is believed to be a large continent. We can see petal-shaped peninsulas, with our island lying in between two "petals".

The land of the Continuum is on an island rather close this so-called continent. If you wish to reach Quatronia, then you simply must follow the coastline of the great continent, and you will soon come to our lands. We have also made contact with another group of civilized people very recently.

As you may have deduced from the presence of the Ganges, we are also a very curious folk. It would be excellent for us to know if you have met any other civilizations, the geography of your homeland, and whether your countrymen have done any exploring themselves.

Your message also suggested possible technology trading. Unfortunately, we do not know how to bring all this potential new information back home, and we are not sure if you know how to either. We are currently looking into better methods of preserving ideas, as these stone tablets don’t seem to cut it. Rest assured, if our people discover these techniques, we will not hesitate to trade knowledge, as I hope you would too.

Naming is not an issue for us, just call us the Continuum, Quatronia, Q, whatever floats your boat.

Lastly, we would like to extend our congratulations that you have created a following for Hinduism, a highly respectable and prestigious religion.

Best Regards,
Ambassador Bowsling,

I have made some suggestions, Bowsling. I think your message was a great start.

Greetings Mavericks,

Hmmm... we would need to explain what a NAP is, as well.

Trading should be an option soon, as we have reason to believe that you also started beside health and luxury resources. Hopefully we can soon give each other our spares of those resources for the good of us all. We have some excess fresh clams and hearty wheat to offer at some point in the future.

Should we volunteer the names of one or two of our resources? Just saying "our spares" only means they have to respond "what resources do you have?" This could save a step of back-and-forthness.

You requested information about this puzzling world, and for the sake of friendship, we are providing.

I don't know how much we want to volunteer about the continent. By calling it "the great continent" we tell them the shape of the world. For all we know, they haven't invested one hammer into exploration. That is their descision, and they should suffer the consequences.

As you may have deduced from the presence of the Ganges, we are also a very curious folk. It would be excellent for us to know if you have met any other civilizations, the geography of your homeland, and whether your countrymen have done any exploring themselves. Perhaps our adventures can piece this world together.

If we don't offer any info about our homeland, then I think we don't have a right to ask about theirs.

Your message also suggested possible technology trading. Unfortunately, we do not know how to bring all this potential new information back home, and we are not sure if you know how to either. I think mine could be fine-tuned too. It also doesn't reveal too much info to the Mavericks. The exploration parts might appear to be lying, but we don't technically know 100% that the petal continent theory is correct... :mischief:

I would add spices to the list of stuff we have to trade. We can hold off on mentioning the silver. But if we are too standoffish about (obviously balanced) starting resources they might think we are plotting to attack them or something crazy like that ;)

In the tech paragraph add a question on the end like: "Would you be willing to share what mysteries your sages have uncovered up to this point and what paths of learning you are planning to pursue?"

I like the second rewrite as well, but we might as well tell them all of the resources we have. We could still ask them what they have explored, as we're giving them a bit of information.

Likely final draft, courtesy of RegentMan with a few of my own edits as well. I will probably send in a few hours.
Greetings Mavericks,

We appreciate the fact that you made such a quick reply to our original private message using e-mail.

We also have a proposition to make:
A 50 turn Non-Aggression Pact, effective Turn 45. So basically, we just agree to not fight each other in any way, shape, or form. Simple as that.

Trading should be an option soon, as we have reason to believe that you also started beside resources. We have some excess fresh clams and hearty wheat to offer at some point in the future, as well as some valuable items your citizens would definitely enjoy.

Our exploring ship, the Ganges, passed through many lands on the way to your fair territory. There is at least one empty landmass between us.

As you may have deduced from the presence of the Ganges, we are also a very curious folk. It would be excellent for us to know if you have met any other civilizations and whether your countrymen have done any exploring themselves, or if there are any dangers such as high rocks in the area. Perhaps our adventures can piece this world together.

Your message also suggested possible technology trading. Unfortunately, we do not know how to bring all this potential new information back home, and we are not sure if you know how to either.
