So as I put my old mobo into a new case (for my mother) a tiny black piece fell off, and then the heatsink/fan on the CPU tried to follow it. The black piece that fell off was a part the holder for the socket 939 heatsink to clip onto, and so it won't stay on properlly anymore. The side with the winch/arm/spinning thing on it is fine, it's the other side, and only the piece in the middle (there are two more clips to either side).

Is there a way to fix this (The mobo isn't under warrenty anymore I don't think unless it is and I don't know, I bought it in 2006, it'd be quicker to buy a new one anyways)?

Or is there a heatsink/fan that has the clip/hook things off to the side instead of in the middle?

PICTURES! YAY! (in spoiler)

Broken part is circled;

You could try a superglue. But if it won't hold, then the mobo is unusable.

Improvise one with a paperclip? But then again, you might end up electrocuting yourself....

I second the superglue idea.

Not a good idea to improv this stuff. The heatsink has to be on tight, otherwise you get significantly worse cooling. Worst comes to worst, it pops off and the cpu overheats, with the motherboard not being able to shut down in time. Then the loose paper clip falls off and short circuits something.

Yes, I figured something bad would happen if you used a paperclip. But they're useful things. I have one on my sweater where the zipper thing broke.

It'd be easier if you had a LGA 775 mobo. Maybe it's time to upgrade? :)

And what GBunny said.

Took it to my freind's dad (I had nothing to lose, if I can't fix it I can't use it anyways :p) he cut an aluminum piece off a picture frame drilled a hoel in it and stuck it between the screw and the bracket, and we cleaned and applied new thermal paste. It should work just fine :)
