Emperor Cookbook - Napoleon!!

@koning
Yes, that's one of the greatest mods made for BTS that doesn't affect savegames. Highly recommend:goodjob:

I might well download this for the next round. hehe.

We need to make a decision on end of round time. Initially I planned a week but I wonder if this is too long.

If people need more time to post a round then we could play this round for 48 hours more. Then we can vote for 48 hrs before starting next round. This way we can finish a round a week.

If anyone needs more time to play please shout. The more saves the better. :)

Well, I ran into computer issues at the end of the previous EC and was unable to keep up with it. But I'm back with a newly-upgraded box and ready to have another crack at Emperor.

Spoiler :

EC2: Napoleon, 4000 BC – 1500 BC
Research list: AH, Pottery, Mining, BW, Fishing, Sailing, Mysticism, Masonry
Settled in place, began exploring. Looks small, arid and isolated. Turns out it’s actually quite populated – we’ve just ended up in the middle of a desert on a strange, ring-shaped piece of land. Barbs are really tearing up my warriors, but at 1500 BC I have two cities up and a third about to be founded next turn. Have begun chopping out the Great Lighthouse as it seems very suited to this map.

3 Warriors
2 Workers
1 Settler

Up to 1500BC. I will try to get screens up in a bit.

EDIT:

Got piled on by work, so no time to add much more before voting. I will try to vote if I can and do more next round.

Spoiler :

My tech situation is reasonable, but not settling in place ended up being a bad call. I had expected more FP to the east and ended up marginalizing what would have been a solid city site to the east.

I tried to get city to up to the SW by the Ivory and block, but a barb city sprung up first, so I had to settle north.

My military situation is weak, and I needed to have gotten those horses hooked up much faster. I let Paris grow too much before getting out settlers and didn't whip enough.

A new box is always a good thing. Something that TMIT could learn from. hehe.

Lets give this round another 24 hours and vote on Friday with next round starting Sunday. As I am working GMT timing I will close this round around 23:00pm GMT.

If lots need more time i could extend it to 8am on friday GMT.

*Cannot load version 302, expected version 301 or lower* Havent had that problem before! Any ideas? Looks like a fun map

You have time to post a round Kbo. :)

You do need latest civ 4 patch 3.19 to play. Link as Soirana. :)

Finally got mods and patches downloaded, here's my kick at it so far

Spoiler :

Founded in place, thought i might have been lucky enough to snag some fish along the coast, nothin. Techs went AH/pottery/mining/BW/fishing/Sailing/mysticism/masonry

Chopped a couple mines up and got Stonehenge since we decided on a non creative leader and i hate building monuments if im not egypt, settled second city after finding horses around there, building another for further south, then firing at GLH.

Big regret not having scouted further east since my warrs died both times to barb archers :(

On a side note, marble might give me a shot at oracle after i have 4 or 5 cities founded, CoL would be handy on this map for the big distances to the capital + early religion with stonehenge + oracle giving prophet power. Gotta get rid of that barb city sometime though, chariots go go.

We will go ahead and vote for 2-3 days. Hopefully finish by Saturday/Sunday. Its not always about voting for the best save but the save that will be most interesting or challenging to play. Anyone that submitted a save is free to vote.

Please rank your top 3 in order.

First place 3 points.
Second place 2 points
Third place. 1 point.

PLEASE NOTE!! To keep voting fair you cant vote for your own save. You are expected to vote for 3 saves and give reasons for your voting. Remember this is a learning game. I would encourage everyone to act within the spirit that the cookbook is intended.

Anyway here are the saves:

Kbo

smitsk00

Jumbled

Steve250

Gumbolt

Teelman

Inso

dirtyparrot

Grashopa

Cripp7

Please remember to relabel your saves for each round.

If i have missed any saves please do shout. I think i got them all.

Voting will end when either everyone has voted or the deadline passes. It would be nice to start the next round on Sunday!

Spoiler :

Not really spoily, but just in case someone wants to play from beginning.

GLH is basically very very good given layout of map. I guess if you want to be challenged you could skip it. Or may be not...

About blocking - what exactly you are blocking with oasis gold? More desert?:) IMO, that city is worth as early commerce [gold+seafood+oasis] and a such should have been second or third. Just my biased opinion.

As southern block goes.... We will see. At any rate you have fare amount of land.

Here are my votes. Took a while to look through the screenshots. Forgot to save the data I used to make my choice :S Could have been useful/saved time to others. Oh well.

3pts Steve250
2pts Ignorant Teacher
1pt Teelman

1st Place (3points): dirtyparrot. Good shot at grabbing the Great Lighthouse with all those forests around the capital and two workers already there to chop them. Bad point: we only have those two workers and would have no settler/worker pump for a while.

2nd Place (2points): kossin. I like the expansion and also think that we can grab the GLH. It would have been the 1st, but I really don't like that worker steal thingy. It's bad diplo for questionable results.

3rd Place (1point): Steve250. The GLH is already advanced and we have a bunch of forests to chop.

Notice a pattern there? I really think the GLH is the best thing we could get in this game.

Edit:
4th Place: cripp7. Very nice empire you're building, the problem is the lack of pottery.

A small request for the next round: Let's all change the name of the leader to Napoleon instead of Napoloen?

I'll just post a summary for everyone's game for the sake of comparison. Please note that for listing the beaker per turn I normalized everyone's to 100% science on the slider. Also, if someone was close to constructing a building (like 1 turn away), I gave that to them. For techs, this is more of a personal judgment, as I think having the GLH is important, I listed as whether people had sailing, masonry, and writing.

Useful chart Parrot.

Going ahead i think we need to look at our strategy. Are we going for a all out domination or something else. Be interesting to see how the voting goes. There are a lot of strong saves out there.

Here are my comments for each save as well as how I ranked them.

@Ignorant Teacher:
Spoiler :

Respectable game so far. You'll have writing in to tech for your expansion. I thought that your city placement (and dot map) looks good, your exploration is alright, although your spawnbusting is rather poor. I would move that chariot out of Paris on patrol. I would try (if your save was picked) to quickly build a wb and send that exploring for the added trade route.

@Kossin:
Spoiler :

A respectable game as well. I thought that you placed you cities well, good amount of infrastructure, and decent exploration. I like that you can go for the GLH right now. Spawn busting could be better (but I guess something had to come at the expense of all those buildings).

@Cripp7:
Spoiler :

An OK game. Good number of troops, although you can do a better job of spawnbusting (I would move that warrior 2E from the marble further south). I don't think that settling Orleans on the hill was a wise move (especially with low level of production on this map). I would whip away the unhealthiness of Paris.

@Grashopa:
Spoiler :

An OK game as well. I think that I've come around to thinking that Lyons is a decent spot (esp if you plan on rushing WvO), especially if you're not going to go for GLH. You're a little light on protection (and there's no spawn busting to make up for it). You have explored the map well. I would have probably not gone for a rush, as that probably let JC and/or Mao a chance to expand a lot.

@Inso:
Spoiler :

An OK game. I think that you could have managed that worker on the hill better (1NE of the clams). You have unhealthiness, but your worker is improving a hill, while there's already a mine that's not being use. The worker would be better off building a road on the pasture. You did do a good job exploring the map and have a good amount of gold set aside for some deficit research.

@Teelman:
Spoiler :

A decent game. Not a huge fan of puting Orleans on a hill. GLH is still an option. Decent exploration, although you to spawn bust more.

@Gumbolt:
Spoiler :

I think that Orleans is placed in the worst location that you could have picked. So, either you're going to need found another city in the desert or you'll have to wait until your 2nd border pop to get the horses. You've done a good job spawn busting.

@Steve250:
Spoiler :

I think that you've clearly have the best save out of everyone. You should get the GLH relatively soon, and you're almost done teching Writing so you can get access to those lucrative trade routes. I would be spawnbusting more. I would also build a WB soon and send it exploring the coastline.

@Jumbled:
Spoiler :

You've done a good job exploring. You are building the GLH, which I think is an excellent idea for this map. Like I've mentioned before, I'm not a big fan of building Orleans on a hill. Plus, I don't understanding why you're teching IW over Writing when you're build GLH.

@Smitsk00:
Spoiler :

I agree with you that gambling for more FP's didn't pan out. You don't have horse hooked up yet. You also haven't explored or spawnbusted much. I wished that I could be more positive for your game.

@Kbo:
Spoiler :

You haven't explored much. You have horse hooked up which is nice and you've built Stonehenge. You've teched everything necessary to build GLH. I don't understand why you don't whip the WB and gain access to the clams immediately.

Top 3:
1. Steve250
2. Kossin
3. Ignorant Teacher

In principle my starting strategy techwise seemed to have worked. I beelined alphabet and backfilled all the other techs. Masonry was left out. Its a low beaker tech although GLH requires it. Techwise I can trade alphabet to every other Ai. An early tech lead is useful.

I can easily whip the lighthouse and chop GLH with 3 worker. Its not a huge issue as long as no AI is already building it.

Orleans will have 3 food resources on the border pop. Missing the horse resource was prolly an error looking back but not a disaster. Perhaps i rushed this round a bit. Too busy trying to pull off the alphabet gambit. :lol:
